Prime minister-designate Constantino Sorantanali
may be on top of the world after his wide victory
in Wednesday's federal election, but there are
many questions he is facing now that he's in.
Diplomatic, executive and policy queries push new PM into spotlight
By Alessandro Spinodore, Timiocato
Constantino Sorantanali is facing three major questions among many others as he prepares for Monday's Official Ceremony for the Transferrance of Power, when outgoing prime minister Dr Timotaio Ell helps to legally invest the prime minister-designate with the powers of his new office.
The first is diplomacy: now that Pacitalia has a new head of state, which country will Mr Sorantanali visit first? Traditionally, it is Hamptonshire, though Dr Ell did it differently by visiting both Hamptonshire and Praetonia in the summer of 1996. However, sources are suggesting Mr Sorantanali will most likely visit Azazia now that the political situation has calmed and Alistair Tetley, the man many Pacitalians call the rightful prime minister in the United Kingdom, is back in his position as head of government there.
The second is executive: what ProDem MPPs will earn cabinet positions? Mr Sorantanali is expected to release his cabinet, which he says, in line with his slightly more liberal political views, will be larger than Dr Ell's cabinet of just 18 agustinates. Domenico Benficalzo, who was Sorantanali's deputy premerati in Sambuca, ran a successful campaign in Sambuca-West and will probably get a plum post.
Other names being tossed around are Adm. Rodrigo Moreno-Cruz (the former head of the Pacitalian Naval Forces, elected in the Puntafora suburban constituency Fangia-Cossanti) for a defence-related portfolio, Sebastiano Sigurimasso for finance or commerce and trade, Fiorenza Neroglianta for education or labour, and longtime Ell cabinet member Luciano Cannavaro for one of the deputy prime minister positions. Sorantanali has said he wants the JDPM to take a more active role both domestically and internationally. Dr Ell's JDPMs were sorely lacking in media and political attention.
The third major question is policy: where will Sorantanali take Pacitalia that will be different from Santo Ragazzo or Ell? Only time will tell, but more and more political scientists believe Sorantanali will take some of the principles of the Third Way political ideology (a mixture of full capitalism and democratic socialism) in order to try to mandate Pacitalians into the 2010s.
And, of course, another question is whether Sorantanali will even be sworn in Monday. There is, after all, a reason why they're called prime minister-designates - a thorough background check is performed and the PM-elect may have to rescind his mandate due to health or personal reasons.
Otherwise, the transferrance of power from Dr Ell to Mr Sorantanali will be one watched by trillions around the world as the heads of state of nearly 100 countries attend the ceremony along with millions of Pacitalians in the Piazza dei Santi. After 30th January, the political winds in Timiocato will most certainly be blowing a different direction, as Mr Sorantanali starts to fill the huge shoes left behind by Mr Santo Ragazzo and Dr Ell.
