Nevus

The Principality of Nevus has a strong history rooted in the land. Rulers may rise and fall, invaders may win temporary victories, but the people and the land stay unified in identity. Even the chosing of a new Grand Prince shows this stubborn independance.
The Grand Prince is elected by a council of nobles that meet one week after the death of the old Prince. Status and number of votes are based on the accounting of taxes and households within the keep of a lord. The richer the tax or larger the number of people under a Lord's command, the more votes accorded. But always there is a maximum number of 309 votes...to avoid ties and force cooperation between groups in order to get the majority needed to win. A council is only allowed to sit for a month. If no new Grand Prince is elected by that time, the title goes to the lord who has the most votes. This has caused civil wars in the past, but after any such war and the death of the appointed Prince...the next council goes smoothly.
The Grand Prince has far reaching powers, bordering on dictatorship. But unless he has a firm power base, these powers are seldom used to their fullest effect. Only in times of war has the Prince weilded this power without question, for while they may plot amongst themselves no noble would tolerate or invite an enemy on to home soil.
The forces of Nevus reflect their tenacity. They bear a great resemblance to the Hussite armies, (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y293/jeudesprit/Past%20Tech%20Nation/Hussite.jpg) both in make-up and spirit. And their Winged Hussars (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y293/jeudesprit/Past%20Tech%20Nation/Winged.jpg) are just as fearsome as their Polish counterparts (the major difference being that the Nevus Hussars carry composite shortbows instead of pistol/carbines). At any given moment, Nevus call forward 50,000 trained and equipped wagoneers and 14,000 Hussars...doubling that in a month's time without imparing the structure of society.
Now, as to the land itself, some numbers:
Land area: 381,741 square kilometers (available farmland 121,786 sq.km. or around 30 million acres).
Water area: 9,810 sq.km.
Population: 3,970,000 (Men- 1,072,500 : Women- 893,250 : Children- 1,905,000)
A little over a million adults plus children are involved in agriculture, producing enough to feed almost half again the total population of Nevus. It's good to be in the bread basket of the continent.
Food is a major export of Nevus, but also their ability and skill in the production of arms, armor and black powder gives Nevus a great deal of solid coinage and credit notes.
The current political situation is in the next post.
