The Principality of Nevus (PT National Reference)

Nevus

The Principality of Nevus has a strong history rooted in the land. Rulers may rise and fall, invaders may win temporary victories, but the people and the land stay unified in identity. Even the chosing of a new Grand Prince shows this stubborn independance.

The Grand Prince is elected by a council of nobles that meet one week after the death of the old Prince. Status and number of votes are based on the accounting of taxes and households within the keep of a lord. The richer the tax or larger the number of people under a Lord's command, the more votes accorded. But always there is a maximum number of 309 votes...to avoid ties and force cooperation between groups in order to get the majority needed to win. A council is only allowed to sit for a month. If no new Grand Prince is elected by that time, the title goes to the lord who has the most votes. This has caused civil wars in the past, but after any such war and the death of the appointed Prince...the next council goes smoothly.

The Grand Prince has far reaching powers, bordering on dictatorship. But unless he has a firm power base, these powers are seldom used to their fullest effect. Only in times of war has the Prince weilded this power without question, for while they may plot amongst themselves no noble would tolerate or invite an enemy on to home soil.

The forces of Nevus reflect their tenacity. They bear a great resemblance to the Hussite armies, (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y293/jeudesprit/Past%20Tech%20Nation/Hussite.jpg) both in make-up and spirit. And their Winged Hussars (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y293/jeudesprit/Past%20Tech%20Nation/Winged.jpg) are just as fearsome as their Polish counterparts (the major difference being that the Nevus Hussars carry composite shortbows instead of pistol/carbines). At any given moment, Nevus call forward 50,000 trained and equipped wagoneers and 14,000 Hussars...doubling that in a month's time without imparing the structure of society.

Now, as to the land itself, some numbers:
Land area: 381,741 square kilometers (available farmland 121,786 sq.km. or around 30 million acres).
Water area: 9,810 sq.km.
Population: 3,970,000 (Men- 1,072,500 : Women- 893,250 : Children- 1,905,000)

A little over a million adults plus children are involved in agriculture, producing enough to feed almost half again the total population of Nevus. It's good to be in the bread basket of the continent.

Food is a major export of Nevus, but also their ability and skill in the production of arms, armor and black powder gives Nevus a great deal of solid coinage and credit notes.

The current political situation is in the next post.

The current Grand Prince is Janos Gregori Mikail Medvedkov, Grand Duke of Kief and Ostergraf of the Marches. He comes from an old family that has held the position of Grand Prince more times than any two other noble families combined. He is 46-years-old and starting the twelfth year of his reign. He is also one of the youngest Princes in history, attaining the title only three years after assuming family head status (a particularly savage battle took his father, older brother and uncle's lives during a repulsed charge).

His personal attributes include a thick and curly mane of blonde hair on top of his six-and-a-half-foot (2 meter) frame. He weights in at 15 stone ( about 96 kg) and has just the beginning of middle-age spread. His eyes are a bright green and sparkle out of a broad face framed by a full bead with just a streak of grey starting. He wears the tan of an outdoorsman. His skills with the noble weapons (lance, saber, composite bow and hammer) are respected and fitting to his position. His true matial prowess lies in Prathon, wrestling where punches and kicks are allowed but concentrates on grappling. It is rumored he wrestles at least once a day to keep in shape.

He is called "the Philosopher" by both his supporters and detractors, and is know to keep a large personal library of many different works in several different languages. His great love of travel, exploration and the sea are well known but he knows the burdens of keeping his country safe and whole pin him on land. His studies have enabled him to invent three new formations and drills for the army, as well as improved corning techniques and storage for powder. His real intellectual prowess, however, lies in codifying laws and negotiating treaties. His philosophy has envisions an organized society where everyone has their place and people can rise to meet their abilities. Of course in the mud and blood riven veil of tears this mortal coil is, that seldom comes to pass.

In the recent past he has sent out an exploration fleet of eight vessal and over six hundred men to bring the extend the greetings of Nevus to the whole world and to sample and bring back treasures from far away. Perhaps to give balm to his need for travel and exploration.....

Greetings to your people and their rightful ruler.

As friends are always preferable to enemies, and our countries could benefit from peace and plenty, I petition you to receive an embassy from Nevus. Would it be acceptable for a Grand Duke to bear our greetings and felecitations? Do you have a city or palace you wish to meet in?

Or shall we have a meeting of rulers to cement our bonds?

I look forward to your answer, at your pleasure,

Prince J.G.M. Medvedkov, OM,GD

Janos paced the floors of his library. He hoped that he could find an excuse to go on the embassy, even if only briefly. The walls of the palace had taken on their prison feel again, and he longed to feel fresh wind and sea spray in his face or a good saddle beneath him.

His thoughts turned briefly to the explorer fleets and a longing to be with them, but that honor went to the two brothers commanding the fleets. Yuri and Gregor, the heirs of the Hochmann and Rottraven families, had all the luck...

Esteemed Prince J.G.M. Medvedkov, the Cabinate would be more than Happy to meet with you in SONOMI the Nation's capital. We are located in Xanadou, but be warned this time of year we have some of the roughest seas. Judging from your location it should take you no more than four day's by sear, two by air. For security and dipolmatic purposes we rather not name the name of our leader over the wire, untill you have met with all of us.

Sincerly, Li Hirihito MOF

Greetings and Solicitations,

My Prince has honored me with heading the embassy bound for your country. As I am intrigued with the possibility of air travel, and not knowing its limitations, I would like to inquire about the size of my staff for the visit.

Can your air transports handle myself and a retinue of 30 others?

Thank you,
Victor D.G. Kashalov, GD

(OOC: I would like to split this meeting thread to this thread here. (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=465466) Okay?)

Kurona has no Airport, but enough space to land a small plane. As for transportations, you will have to provide that. We will of course provid you with transportation within Kurona. you are allowed to bring with you a moderate staff, armed guards, your advisors, and any other misc. Staff you desire.

(OOC: We can start the meeting in the next thread)

(OOC: woah woah woah, stop, Air Travel????!? this is supposed to be PT or Past Tech, the only possible form of air travel would be gliders which would float for a couple of miles at least and carry about 1 person, methinks you want MT or Modern Tech)

OOC: Fantasy is not allowed in Philanchezs thread, excluding the odd elf/ogre (or whatever Toop is) race. I dont think flying horses are allowed, or more accurately I am certain they are not allowed.

(OOC: As I thought too, so I split it off and keep the two different and seperate. I said in the other thread that Nevus has no idea that you can travel in the air. They aren't going to learn either. Not in this vision of my country right now.)
