The State of Affairs (AMW)

Geronia

OOC: This is meant to be Geronia's (aka AMW South Korea) information thread for updating other players in the AMW on the status of events in Korea. I tried to work in most of what was in the TG Qunntonian Dra-pol sent me a couple weeks back, but if I missed anything, please let me know.

IC:

The recovery of the Southern half of the peninsula was astronomical. In the years since the Dra-poel invasion, the republic at the south end of the Korean peninsula had begun its vault back into worldwide promenance. While it was true that Dra-poel forces still occupied the northern half of Geronia, the rest of the nation was still under the rule of the republic.

The government, now located in the relative safety of the southern city of Taegu, continued to carry out its tasks of rebuilding the country. President Edward Choi, the charismatic young leader at the head of the government, spurred the people of the country on to greater achievements. The National Assembly reconvened, filled now with much younger and quick-headed assemblymen, representing the remaining seven provinces of South Korea, minus Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do provinces. Backed by powerful international supporters including the LRR, Quinntonia, TBF, and other nations, the government rested for now, content that this balance of international power would be sufficient to stave off the ambitions of Dra-poel.

The military however was still suspicious of their northern counterparts. With much of the military's infrastructure and defense system having been lost when the 38th Parallel was overwhelmed, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, headed by Major General Choi Chul Ho, focused on creating a new defense line staggered across the 36th Parallel. The city of Suwon, the northenmost major city still held by the ROGA (Republic of Geronia Army) had been turned into a veritable fortress, compared by many to the cities of the North. Antiaircraft weaponry and missile batteries were emplaced in the streets and on top of the city's buildings. The populace was kept under permanent martial law; their freedoms restricted and outside of the city, armored vehicles and soldiers patrolled along a landscape marked by minefields, tank traps, forward staging areas, camoflaged bunkers, anti-armor batteries, radar sites, and an entirely new string of barbed wire fencing cutting across the peninsula. The conscription law, increased following the war, meant that all males at age 18 had to submit to five years of conscripted service.

However the South had been changed drastically by the war, its society having been affected, much as its government and military had. The outpouring of aid from Christian countries and the strong religious support given by Quinntonia had drawn many to discover Christ and the country now claimed around 19.8 million Christians out of a total population of 36 million-over half of the the total. Churches had sprouted across the country and faith was even finding its way into the government; two parties had sprung up with Christian backing and support, though they took radically different views. The Geronian Christian Party, headed by Sang Woo Lee, called for a peaceful solution to the continuing hostilities with Dra-poel, advocating a calm stance in which Christian ministry and forgiveness towards Dra-poel should be the foremost points. It's opponent, the Christian National Party, headed by Dr. Kwan Min Ho, called for Geronians to take up the cross and "arm themselves with the weapons of God," calling for a "march to Dakheim," and an "end to evil." Fearing provoking the North, the leaders in Taegu attempted to muzzle the CNP, however they were eventually forced to allow the party to freely express itself, following massive student riots in the capital.

Commerce was booming as well. Geronia's normalization of relations with Dai Nippon Koku opened up another avenue of commerce and Geronian finance ministers reported a 16% overall increase in GNP for the first year of normalized relations. Manufacturers in the ports of Busan, Masan, and Po'hang began to win overseas contracts for ships, cars, electronics, and other consumer goods, in turn, the government rewarded firms from countries such as Quinntonia, Dai Nippon Koku, and LRR, with top slots on domestic construction projects. The country's largest chaebol, Hyunhan, began to regroup itself under the charismatic leadership of Chung Ju Yu and began once more trying to compete in the global international market.

The country still remained the same as a whole, largely homogenous, although larger numbers of foreigners were now present; many of them foreign aid workers or Christian missionaries. The traditional racially standoffish nature of the Koreans had been penetrated by a massive sense of gratitude for foreigners as well as the rapid spread of the Christian faith.

(Mostly a tag, however, I'm not absolutely sure about this, but wasn't Suwon captured? Because it stood-out in the Drapoel plan as a major air force centre, didn't it? Or maybe it was just the air base that was over-run and not the city, I don't know enough about the local geography to know if that's possible.)

(I'm not entirely sure why Suwon wasn't captured by Dra-poel; he can probably give you a much better reason than I can because I was absent from NS during the time the war was being fought).

Choi to face tough coalition for re-election bid
By Sung Han Lee, staff writer, Korea Times

Incumbent president Edward Choi will face some tough opposition as he runs for a re-election bid later this year. Despite having won an overwhelming victory for the National Party in the previous election, a large failure on Choi's part to control foreign policy and carry out some of his promises have alienated him from segments of the population, particularly the conservative side.

The toughest opposition that Choi will face is the "Chun-hoe" or "Spring Group" faction. Formed as an alliance between two conservative parties; the Christian National Party and the staunchly right-wing Defense Party, the Chun-hoe faction will make it harder for Choi to repeat the same kind of victory he took in 2001.

"We must put a government into power who will be able to face down the threat from the north," spoke CNP leader Kwan Min Ho. "Choi has failed to properly provide deterrence for a Northern attack and we will offer a credible alternative."

While Choi carried both Chungcheongbuk-do and Gangwon-do provinces in the last election, he is not expected to do so this time, due to the vastly conservative political arena in both countries.

OOC: Essentially if Choi fails to win re-election and a more conservative faction takes power (primarily the Christian right), we will most likely see a Geronia that is leaning further towards embracing a tougher national posture and even the possibility of preventive war. I'm not insinuating anything, just trying to liven it up.

(Sorry, my last post was confusing, I've tried to edit it. I meant that I thought Suwon was captured, because it stood-out as a major air force base, and that it was the last major city on the west that the Drapoel held on to. Well, I suppose it doesn't matter at this very second. I was going to actually post in character, but my head's about to fall off, so maybe I'll come back.)

(Snap, hm, I'm not really clear on how the war was fought. If Dra-poel did actually capture Suwon and someone can tell me that he did, I'll gladly relinquish control of Suwon. For now though I guess I'll keep RPing as if Suwon is still under Southern control).

-The 37th Parallel Demarcation Line-

January 23, 2006, 0950 hours

The sun had been up for four hours and Private Kwan Sang Ho was ready to get off his shift and turn it over to someone else. A 20 year old from the Southern city of Busan, Private Kwan was currently in his second year of mandatory military service with three left to go. His uniform; the standard ROGA stripe-and-splotch camo with the blue ROGA 3rd Army patch on the shoulder was tight across his muscular frame. A .9mm M92F on his left hip and a Daewoo 5.56mm K-2 assault rifle over his shoulder completed the look.

Private Kwan's guard post was one of many located along the DMZ. Since the conclusion of the war with Dra-poel, the new demarcation line had been moved south to the 37th Parallel. Consisting of strands of electrified concertina wire, minefields, reinforced bunkers, antiaircraft defenses, radar sites, emplaced troops, electronic tripwires, and supported by the weight of the 3rd Army's 155mm field artillery and M1A1 Abrams tanks, the DMZ was supposed to prevent a second war from occurring.

"How are things looking today over on the commie side?" spoke up another young figure, clad in an identical uniform. "Captain says its time for me to relieve you."

With a relaxed look, Private Kwan handed over the binoculars he'd been using to scan the Dra-poel side of the borcer. "There isn't much happening today. Border's been quiet."

"You can never tell with these bal-gae-ni shekis," spat out Kwan's counterpart. "Treacherous northern bastards. One day we'll swarm back over that border, take back Seoul, and kill every Commie bastard north of that fence while we do it."

"I hope not," shuddered Kwan. "War is something we've experienced once in our lifetime."

He paused.

"I pray we never face it again."

(OOC: Yes, Suwon was captured, being about the most extreme point to which any of our tunnels reached and targetted because of its airbase facilities. In the end that helped us little, as a lot of the airpower thrown against us came from carrier battle groups and made progress further down the west coast impossible. Isn't the map still on BG's hosting? Well, I'll post the link and see if it still goes anywhere (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v148/Chivtv/NS1/Drapolmap.jpg). Ah, yes, and you can just make out Suwon south of Seoul there. Actually, on closer inspection, this is a pretty old map before the Kurosites renamed Munsan and Wonju, but that doesn't matter since the Suloist coup, anyway. I use that map along with a bigger one such as this (http://www.flying-cows.com/Assets/Images/MapSK.jpg) to figure out details.
I'd say that P'yongt'aek is probably the border town in the extreme northwest of the ROK, the border then goes north a little between Ansong (Southern) and Ich'on (Northern), sweeps down past Ch'ungiu (probably Northern?), leaving Chomch'on another border town before heading east through the middle of Andong and up slightly to leave Yongdok on the Southern side but, I think, badly damaged in the war by amphibious and aerial operations.
Sorry for the lack of in-character stuff, I'll come back to this thread!)

The Indian forces in the ROG had decreased from almost a hundred thousand during the high point of the Unification War to perhaps one hundred advisors and administrative staff, plus of course the INADF's special photoreconaissance squadron and its Canberras. If cross-border war comes again to the Korean peninsula, relatively little in the way of help is apt to come from the Indian Subcontinent. However, the ROG, it is hoped, feels quite secure with Quinntonian Dra-Pol nearby and a now-friendly Japan a mere phone-call away.

Indian construction companies are quite happy to recieve Korean building projects, even if all but the best-funded can't deploy on that kind of distance with anything resembling speed. And Mumbai is happy that Korean industry is getting back on its feet, even if it does compete with Indian shipbuilding.

Government prepares to host foreign representatives
Diplomatic relations sought with The Estenlands

By Kang Min Hwa, staff writer, Korea Times
The Foreign Ministry announced today that it is preparing itself for a visit by diplomatic envoys representing The Estenlands. Representatives from the Eastern European country are scheduled to arrive in Taegu on January 28, paving the way for possible diplomatic ties between the two countries. The Estenlands will be the first Eastern European country to open diplomatic relations with Geronia since the end of the War of Aggression.

"We expect that this meeting will go smoothly," reported Foreign Ministry spokesman, Han Se Hwan. "All of us in the foreign service are looking forward to opening ties in Eastern Europe, something we currently lack."

Plans are in the works to greet the representatives with a military procession and salute (including a flyover by Air Force fighter jets). The representatives are then expected to be personally greeted by President Choi at the Presidential Palace, which will be followed by a tour of the National Museum, the Hyunhan chaebol headquarters, and the recently built Impo Steelworks at Gwangju.

Geronia currently enjoys relations with several countries including Hudecia, Quinntonia, Roycelandia, and the LRR.

"This is bloody unacceptable!" comes Mumbai's collective reaction to Estenlandic diplomatic involvement in the ROG. While the official statement is somewhat more politely worded, it still communicates Parliament's high level of disapproval. Tsar Wingert, it states, is a tyrant and madman twice as bad as Hotan ever was, guilty of untold violence in Lavrageria. Wingert, the statement says, is a reactionary and hater of all things democratic, and sees communism as a threat to his personal power, not caring a whim for his people. For Taegu to pursue relations with the Tsar, someone held in the absolute lowest esteem by all but a few Indians, is seen as nothing short of a betrayl.

No doubt if the new government wanted to let the Tsar on board Mumbai wouldn't really be able to do anything to stop it, but the Geronian government can count on the removal of all Mumbai's support if such a thing were to happen.
