Geronia

OOC: This is meant to be Geronia's (aka AMW South Korea) information thread for updating other players in the AMW on the status of events in Korea. I tried to work in most of what was in the TG Qunntonian Dra-pol sent me a couple weeks back, but if I missed anything, please let me know.
IC:
The recovery of the Southern half of the peninsula was astronomical. In the years since the Dra-poel invasion, the republic at the south end of the Korean peninsula had begun its vault back into worldwide promenance. While it was true that Dra-poel forces still occupied the northern half of Geronia, the rest of the nation was still under the rule of the republic.
The government, now located in the relative safety of the southern city of Taegu, continued to carry out its tasks of rebuilding the country. President Edward Choi, the charismatic young leader at the head of the government, spurred the people of the country on to greater achievements. The National Assembly reconvened, filled now with much younger and quick-headed assemblymen, representing the remaining seven provinces of South Korea, minus Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do provinces. Backed by powerful international supporters including the LRR, Quinntonia, TBF, and other nations, the government rested for now, content that this balance of international power would be sufficient to stave off the ambitions of Dra-poel.
The military however was still suspicious of their northern counterparts. With much of the military's infrastructure and defense system having been lost when the 38th Parallel was overwhelmed, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, headed by Major General Choi Chul Ho, focused on creating a new defense line staggered across the 36th Parallel. The city of Suwon, the northenmost major city still held by the ROGA (Republic of Geronia Army) had been turned into a veritable fortress, compared by many to the cities of the North. Antiaircraft weaponry and missile batteries were emplaced in the streets and on top of the city's buildings. The populace was kept under permanent martial law; their freedoms restricted and outside of the city, armored vehicles and soldiers patrolled along a landscape marked by minefields, tank traps, forward staging areas, camoflaged bunkers, anti-armor batteries, radar sites, and an entirely new string of barbed wire fencing cutting across the peninsula. The conscription law, increased following the war, meant that all males at age 18 had to submit to five years of conscripted service.
However the South had been changed drastically by the war, its society having been affected, much as its government and military had. The outpouring of aid from Christian countries and the strong religious support given by Quinntonia had drawn many to discover Christ and the country now claimed around 19.8 million Christians out of a total population of 36 million-over half of the the total. Churches had sprouted across the country and faith was even finding its way into the government; two parties had sprung up with Christian backing and support, though they took radically different views. The Geronian Christian Party, headed by Sang Woo Lee, called for a peaceful solution to the continuing hostilities with Dra-poel, advocating a calm stance in which Christian ministry and forgiveness towards Dra-poel should be the foremost points. It's opponent, the Christian National Party, headed by Dr. Kwan Min Ho, called for Geronians to take up the cross and "arm themselves with the weapons of God," calling for a "march to Dakheim," and an "end to evil." Fearing provoking the North, the leaders in Taegu attempted to muzzle the CNP, however they were eventually forced to allow the party to freely express itself, following massive student riots in the capital.
Commerce was booming as well. Geronia's normalization of relations with Dai Nippon Koku opened up another avenue of commerce and Geronian finance ministers reported a 16% overall increase in GNP for the first year of normalized relations. Manufacturers in the ports of Busan, Masan, and Po'hang began to win overseas contracts for ships, cars, electronics, and other consumer goods, in turn, the government rewarded firms from countries such as Quinntonia, Dai Nippon Koku, and LRR, with top slots on domestic construction projects. The country's largest chaebol, Hyunhan, began to regroup itself under the charismatic leadership of Chung Ju Yu and began once more trying to compete in the global international market.
The country still remained the same as a whole, largely homogenous, although larger numbers of foreigners were now present; many of them foreign aid workers or Christian missionaries. The traditional racially standoffish nature of the Koreans had been penetrated by a massive sense of gratitude for foreigners as well as the rapid spread of the Christian faith.
