The Invasion of Lunatias

Vaneras
11-01-2006, 00:16
With the rising of the sun came the call of a dozen trumpets, echoing over the plains. Drums started shortly after, announcing the approach of Lunatias’s invaders. Hundreds of men marched and drove towards their goal, armed to the teeth for war. Tanks lurched and supply trucks sped along hilly, grassy terrain, with about a dozen motorcycle-borne scouts riding ahead.

It was the beginning of summer, and so although the flowers were in full bloom, and the scenery was awash with light, it was also hot as hell. Sweat poured down the soldiers’ faces in waves. For them, water seemed to be the biggest necessity of this war- and they would thank their maker that the supply trucks had brought along plenty of it. This was to be the first day of a great War- one that would earn both Vaneras, and its very Region of Azhirenal, a great deal more land. It was to be the first war for Vaneras in over a hundred years, but they were determined do it right. Defeat was not an option, and the Generals knew that well enough.

Still, the army had some setbacks going in. For one, Vaneras had no military force in the skies to speak of: no jets, no attack helicopters, nothing. It also made the transfer of supplies a fair bit more difficult, until they could force commercial airlines to lend their planes for supply runs. Second, Vaneras had little information to go on about their present surroundings. A few maps that were over five years old…but that was it. Still, they were confident, and were more than ready to deal death to any that might stand in their way…

(That would be me he's attacking x_x:sniper: )

"So they weren't bluffing then when they sent that telegram." The scout scurried away from the Emperor as he pondered the report that'd just been handed off to him. Though an attack had been promised by Vaneras just a few days earlier, no one in the Emperor's staff had honestly expected them to carry through with it. Still, defenses had been somewhat prepared in case the threat was real. Now, it would seem, the army would needed to be fully mobilized, and fast.

"Aran," the young Emperor called, "come here." A robed man hurried over to the boy from across the hall, querying "Yes milord?" The Emperor, Zeshin, rose from his seat and walked down the steps of his throne. "Mobilize the troops, and have the airforce prepped for launch. We need to intercept them before they can hit any of our cities, understand? Once the airforce is prepped, inform me of it, as I will be leaving for the front."

"Yes my liege..." The minister said with a bow, hurrying off to ready the troops. Zeshin turned and walked back behind his throne, gazing out the large window looking out upon his capitol...he hoped things would end well for his nation...

It was around sun down when the Vaneras forces finally halted their advance. Another few hours the next day, and they would, according to their outdated maps, reach one of Lunatias’s more important trade cities. Once the city was seized, the columns would split in two, with a smaller force remaining as a garrison in the city, and the larger headed towards the waters to start its assault on some (if any) of the coastal batteries there. Once that was accomplished, the Vaneras Navy would sail up and assault the coastal cities from the water, while the army columns laid siege to them on land. After that, amphibious landings would begin, and the full force would head inland for the capital. As far as both the King and his Generals could tell, this was a nearly foul-proof plan.

Scouts were dispatched from the camp as tents were pitched, and sentinels took their positions around the outside of the massive army, keeping watch for any encroaching signs of the enemy. Mechanics made some late checks of the equipment and vehicles, just to make sure everything was in order. If all went according to plan, the war with Lunatias would truly begin in the coming day.

General Sofiya stood at the helm of the battleship, “Apocalypse”, the largest in Dinteron’s fleet. Arrayed all around her, dozens of other ships moved across the relatively calm waters of the sea, all heading for a single destination. A light breeze wafted threw every now and then, blowing sprinkles of water across the woman’s face. Puffs of smoke rose from her faded red lips as she enjoyed a cigaret. When she finally put it out, flicking it out into the water, she turned back towards the bridge, and began to return.

The fleet ahd set out for Lunatias just a while before in complete radio silence, intending to aid in the war effort- on Vaneras’s side. Its King had decided early on that to aid his neighbor in Azhirenal was the bst path to take, and so had hurriedly commited his troops to the effort. Nearly the whole of the nation’s navy was launched for the invasion, with thousands of soldiers loaded on for the late-night landing operations to come. Dozens of planes were also stored within the large aircraft carriers, to provide support during such missions, and for defense against enemy air assults. Dinteron’s troops were trained and bloodthirsty- they were just itching for some actionas their goal drew closer.

A DECLARATION FROM THE SOVEREIGN GOVERNMENT OF THE KINGDOM OF GRECCOVIA

From the English Forums (s3.invisionfree.com/england)

The benevolent King Frederic X of Greccovia has thought long and hard about the situation unfolding between Lunatias and the agressive coalition against Lunatias led by Vaneras. The King has determined that peace cannot be achieved through peaceful means and has decided to enter the conflict between the mentioned forces on the side of the governments of Lunatias and Resine. Furthermore, it has been observed by the Greccovian Intelligence Agency, that Lunatias's Defense Budget stands at the small amount of approximately 39.4 billion NationStates Dollars. The King of Greccovia believes that this cannot pay for a war of such enormous scale, and would like to point out that the total budget of Greccovia is 7.458 trillion NationStates Dollars. Therefore, because the Kingdom of Greccovia has so many resources at its disposal, the King of Greccovia has agreed to pass legislation that gives the nation of Lunatias a foreign aid package worth 500 billion NationStates Dollars. The King of Greccovia hopes that the government of Lunatias uses this gift to triumph over the warloving dogs inhabiting the Nations of the Vaneras Coalition. The King also approves a full Military Alliance with the nation of Lunatias.

[x]King Frederic X of Greccovia

Also note this statement by the nation of Resine:

His Majesty's Government of Resine is sadden by these acts of unprovoked aggression and stand ready to make available economic and material resources to assisted in the defence of Lunatias. Additionaly, the admiralty has been instructed to ensure the safety of Resinique citizens in the area of conflict and to station ships of the fleet international waters off of the Lunatian coast.

Please note that the immense monetary resources of Greccovia and the professional military of Resine are prepared to fight in a war against Vaneras and his coalition. The Greccovian Navy has been stationed off the coast of Vaneras, and King Frederic X has issued a warning to all nations working for the downfall of his ally Lunatias. Cease your attacks or face total destruction.

OOC: Do you think we could move this to the English forums, it would be easier to track. It's ok if you don't want to. Just a suggestion.

OOC: Please, everyone, check your economies. Only Lunatias and Resine (who's not even here) are in shape to fight the war you describe.

3.5 billion in Defense. How can you have grand battleships and dozens of ships with that budget?

http://nstracker.retrogade.com/index.php?nation=vaneras
8 billion in Defense. Are you sure you can afford fighting an offensive against a nation almost six times as big as yours?

Not a single buck in Defense. "Immense monetary resources"? Where? No further comments.

However, the total budget of Greccovia comes to 7.48 Billion NS Dollars. Leaving more than enough to allocate towards a foriegn aid package (which falls under Commerce Category, IMO). Also, 2.2 Billion NastionStates Dollars in the Defense department of the Greccovian Navy.

Eh, no, Law & Order isn't Defense; it's police, not soldiers. You don't have a single cent in the Defense budget, so technically you can't even have a military in the first place. I hate to break it to you.

Nevertheless, you can send monetary aid to Lunatias, but nothing more.

Intercepted from a HunTerra radio transmission:

"High Commander Ciafardoni dispatched four days ago a huge amount of infantry and tank divisions to aid Lunatias defence. Rumours are as well that the High Commander himself are hurrying to the defence. Since HunTerra and Lunatias is divided by a large ocean, military experts suspects that a regiment under command by High Commander Ciafardoni himself has taken the seaway in the newly developed "Underwater fortresses" called "Hellbenders". These are some of the most powerful submarines in the world at the moment, designed to pound both naval targets and ground, and transporting a huge amount of troops at a tremendous high rate of speed. Noone is certain, but these are suspicions from both HunTerra military experts and foreign ones. One thing certain is that these soldiers are all moving out to defend Lunatias. In other news..."

James Ciafardoni stepped out on the submarine deck, waiting for the small motor boat to deploy. He was a quite tall man, and not one of those you would think were a High Commander of the HunTerra military. James had long dreadlocks tied up in a knot in his neck, violating almost all of the military codes of conduct(Concerning haircuts) in HunTerra. At 35 years, he had earned the highest military rank in the HunTerra army, which was very remarkable. He had not shaved himself in five days, which had left some irritating hair around his cheek.
He was doing his best to imitate the WWII Field Marshall Montgomerys tactics to keep the moral in the men; by acting as any ordinary soldier in the camps. He even sometimes fought alongside with them. But right now, he was just waiting for the boat to deploy from the insides of the Hellbender submarine.

James gazed to the east, where a Lunatias harbour lay. They must have been quite surprised when two huge shadows had appeared from the deep, revealing to be HunTerra marked. Slowly, James chuckled as he thought about the looks from the Lunatiasans if he had lifted on hand and stuttered: "We... Come.. In... P-E-A-C-E."
That was a thing that wouldn't happen. Although James wasn't sure if Lunatias had picked up their message about their arrival. He had to hope for the best.

The sun was setting, and High Commander James Ciafardoni finally got onboard the small motor boat, along with some of his personal escorts. Behind him, his regiment started slowly to prepare themselves for getting back on solid ground after days off-shore, mostly under water. They didn't have much armor, three tanks for each submarine, but they would get their chance to be effective.

Hirosami Kildarno browsed the various foreign telegrams sent to his office. Since it was a pretty quiet day, Hiro opted to read the two dozen messages himself, rather than allow his overworked and underpaid secretary. After reading much drivel on the state of pumpkin exports, Hiro glanced upon a communication from Lunitas. Now Hiro prides himself on his knowledge of foreign affairs, but Lunitas was a new nation which Hiro knew nothing about.

"To our fellow residents of England, I, on behalf of the Holy Empire of Lunatias, beg for assistance. Earlier today, military forces from the Kingdom of Vaneras crossed our borders to invade our nation. Our forces have moved to intercept and repel them...but the other nations in their region are moving to invade as well. Our lands are sought as further resources and space for their own territories, as far as we can tell, and we cannot let such a thing stand. It is doubtful we can repel three nations at once, so it is for this reason that I request aid for Lunatias, and for our Emperor..."

Hiro pressed a small red button on his desk. “Hello Miss Seroa?”

“Yes, Ambassador?” Miss Seroa’s voice came through the speaker slightly distorted.

“Could you get me the files on a nation called Lunitas please?”

“Yes, Ambassador”

Hiro was sure he heard annoyance in Miss Seroa’s voice, but he let it pass.

For the remainder of the day, Hiro was in study over intelligence reports, first on Lunatias, then on Vaneras and Dinteron. Hiro grinned. This was a war Hirota could get involved in, and win.

(...)You are the kind of people that just pisses me off. Let these people play NationStates their way, why should you interrupt them? I bet they never even heard of the nstracker, nseconomy, nsretrogade or Sunset's budget calculator. Who says these calculators aren't flawed, and why are they holy to you?

The NS calculator says they have 0% on budget and woe to anyone who claims otherwise! Wingarde, you may write fancy nancy roleplay posts and swell storefronts but you're nowhere an NS authority who can just claim "this cannot be done, and that too." Hey! Here's a novel idea, my defence budget is a lot higher than yours and my defence per capita too, so any war we might fight you will lose definitely. The numbers say so, therefore any discussion about it is a waste of time.

See what I mean?

The trackers are most of the time direct representation of the choices you take when handling issues, which are the heart of the game (the values are taken from the game's XML output). 0% in an area means you dedicate no attention whatsoever to it when it comes up in an issue.

But fine. Then people waste effort in programming those "flawed" trackers, and in writing those countless articles that advise you how you should play, too. Numbers aren't everything usually, but they are when you intend to carry out an offensive against a country six times as big as yours and better prepared than you. If NS is nothing more than having a page show the name of your nation and its flag, then it's perfectly fine.

I don't consider myself anywhere near a NS authority, I never told them they couldn't play that way, but advised them to rethink what they were doing given the situation of each side. But again, if NS is merely a hollow shell for a name and a flag, then there's absolutely no problem with this.

If the calculators are flawed, then they are flawed for everyone - or the data it collects from NS is flawed. Some of the calculators disagree on somethings, but they all agree on proportions of budgets - that's because that's straight from NS. So it's not the calcs that are flawed or holy, it's NS itself.

Besides, with no numbers, all we have is godmodding. If someone spends 0% on their armed forces, they have a hard time justifying where they got their supermegahyper battle cruiser from when they can barely afford a club with a nail in one end, and rightly so.

Now instead of being nasty, why don't you...
