The Roman Pitch For The Vatican (Earth II, ATTN: Huahin)

For years, Vatican City had been a thorn on the Roman side. Ownership rotated between Rome and The Knights Templars given the latter's political instability. However, recently the Government of Huahin had managed to snag the hill in the suburbs of Rome itself, an assault that went unnoticed by Roman authorities but not forgotten by the Consul of the city itself, Gnaeus Valerius Maderia.

Bringing back the Vatican into Roman control would be a No. 1 priority for Maderia, who viewed the Huahinian assault as one of the reasons why the Romans needed him and not the incumbent Rodin Hartian as the Emperor of Rome. A true Emperor wouldn't let territories slip under his nose, and I'm going to correct this mistake, he thought.

He called the Huahinians to organize a meeting and decided to organize a delegation team to meet up with the Huahinians to discuss the transfer- once and for all- of Vatican City to Roman control. The mission would mark his first foreign affairs mission since declaring his intention for running for the Imperial Office, meaning the world would now truly get to see how he'd be like as the leader of the oldest state on Earth.

Days had passed without a reply from the Huahinians. They had completely ignored every effort by the Romans to talk, so it was time for action.

Rodin Hartian- visiting New Orleans to talk with the Reichklanzler over the creation of The Republic of New Orleans- made the call from his hotel room at 9PM, ordering a siege of Vatican City:

Final Ultimatum to the Huahinian Government

Following the Huahinian capture of Rockall, we see the presence of Huahin in Vatican City as a threat to Rome itself. With no assurances from your government that you will not strike at Rome itself, we have no choice but to request your surrender of the City under our terms, and that a Roman aircraft be permitted into the city to airlift out all Roman Catholic officials- including the Pope- to Rome itself where the Church can resume its functions.

The borders have been closed, and our forces all over the Empire have been placed at the highest alert possible. There will be no strikes unless we are attacked, but one Legion has been stationed around Vatican City to ensure that nothing can get in or out of the City. Should you attempt to relieve the siege, your aircraft will be shot on sight, and should you attempt to invade the Empire, you will be faced with swift retaliation.

Understand that you are in no position to bargain. Territorially you are completely surrounded by us, and, given the size of Vatican City (OOC: 44 hectares), you do not have the forces necessary to retaliate. We will not strike at you unless you attack us, for we have no intention of destroying Vatican City. Should you decide to voluntarily surrender, your officials will be given amnesty and shall be allowed free passage out of the city. We shall also lift the siege should you decide to give us a reasonable offer for the City- otherwise, the borders shall remain closed.

Official Communique To The Roman Catholic Church

We are taking no position against you, just Huahin, for we are worried that with their expansion they will go after us next. We will continue to offer you protection for yourselves and the Roman Catholic religion within the Roman Empire. We will be sending an aircraft to airlift all of you out until the City becomes ours, in which case you will be allowed to return.

Caesar Gaius Romanus Rodinus Hartianus

OOC- I'd like to point out that the Papacy IS a Roman office, so technically, Huahin, you're housing Roman officials:

Official Communique To The World

After Huahin had taken Rockall, we have been forced to take action against Huahin, whose expansion we view as a threat to us because of their presence right inside Rome itself. We have made an offer to the Papacy for free passage and protection so that the only people left inside the Vatican ae Huahinian officials, which we will allow to leave should Huahin decide to voluntarily surrender. Understand that we are not doing this for land- we are worried that Huahin will strike us next, so we have decided to get to them before it is too late. We will not strike the Vatican unless we are attacked and are hopeful for a peaceful resolution. We therefore ask for your help and support in this matter.

Thank you.

Rockfall was only the most recent of Huahinian land grabs. Their failed attempt at claiming Israel risked destroying countless artifacts from several thousand years of civilization. Their occupation of the Vatican poses the risk of ruining countless valuable works, both in the Vatican and in the rest of the city. As a result, Elephanti soldiers and aircraft in Iran and Kurdistan will be moblized to counter any Huahinian actions in the Causcaus. If the situation comes to war, we will support the Romans. We would advise the Huahinian government, and people at large, to back down immediately.

"The Roman Government thanks Elephantum for their support".

The Empire is saddened that religion has not had the history it has preached for the future. Violence is always preached by religion to be something of a sin yet it has never been that way. The Empire, an agnostically governed state, has a majority religion of Paganism and while Roman Catholocisim is the second largest group, the Empire feels that this move could potentially lead to disaster. The Empire, officially, has no stance upon these actions nor shall it take action either way. Should Roman Catholics in the Empire feel the desire to visit the Vatican or Rome to pay homage to the Holy See, the Empire requests that they be allowed to do so.

Roman Catholic groups with proof of their identification (i.e. proper documentation from their Church) will be allowed to enter Vatican City, provided this information and length of stay documentation is presented to Roman authorities. We do not intend to restrict access to the Vatican for anyone but Huahinian officials.

(OOC: Just as a background on all this, The Knights Templars never *officially* held the Vatican- he rented it from me. "The Pope" was rebranded as the overseer of ALL religions in the Roman Empire, and the Catholic head- who TKT RP'ed as- was planted in the Vatican. Nevertheless, in E2, he's a Roman official.)

We of Huahin would like to make it clear that any expansionist plans we may have do not currently include the territory of the Roman Empire, but nevertheless we will still negotiate with Rome for the exchange of the Vatican as we believe it is in the best interests that the Vatican is owned by Rome.

We thank the Huahinians for their hospitality and hope to strike what we hope will be the first of many deals between our two honourable nations.

An exchange involving Hans Island and the Vatican has been negociated, we await the confirmation of Rome. At this very moment the last Huahinian troops are being airlifted out of the Vatican.

Confirmed. We are also interested in the possibility in an embassy exchange given the proximity of our nations.

OOC: Thanks. Just confirm in the Earth II thread and the deal can be finished.

An embassy exchange would be welcome. Also, what alliances are you a member of?

Just the Roman Confederacy, our own creation. We promote peace and democracy and seek to be the "mediator" of the global stage- we do not officially align ourselves with the other two alliances but we do not pit ourselves against them either.

If you wish to join, let us know and we will raise it with the other alliance members.

The Empire is pleased that this situation ended without bloodshed. Religious wars never end favorably for the human race. The Empire will continue its agnostic stance towards religion and God but it can look favorably upon the future for the peaceful actions that occured in the Vatican. The Empire will play host to the Pope, should he and the Roman Catholic population within our Empire wish to have him. Many of our citizens are of hispanic descent and very religious. A Papal visit could be extremely beneficial for church attendance in the Empire.

OOC: Want to get some tensions? Have the Pope assassinated by a Pagan group from the Empire. :)
