Another world. Another universe. Another time Where magic existed, where great beasts stalked the Earth. Where humans fought to dominate all.

Topal's capital city, Lombardo city.

The Giants arena was busy, even for this time of year. But it was not because of a gladiatorial fight nor an elven circus. It was a war meeting. The arena was packed full of Topal soldiers and their superiors, waiting for their king to speak. The ruling classes had the comfort of their own boxes, but the common soldiers had to suffer stiffling heat generated by bringing so many men together in the lower sections. This did not stop the general merriment however, as soldiers laughed and chatted ignoring the increasing temperatures. Everyone was excited. It seemed Topal was going to war.

King Roland of Topal stood forward, his powerful presence silencing the mighty arena. Talking loudly but slowly, allowing time for his repeaters to carry the message through the humongous arena, he began.

"Today is a great day for Topal." He began. "Today we begin to build the Topalian empire!" Roland paused, waiting for the cheer to die down.

"My loyal soldiers. We are ready to strike. Our boarders are ready to be stretched to the very ends of the earth!"

"There was a time when this seemed impossible. When our neighbours numbers seemed so much greater than our own. But how we have been patient!"

"For I know your swords are sharpened! Our spears number in the thousands, forming a forrest of spears! But most importantly of all we have your courage! Courage to fight any battle to the death!"

"And yet there is doubt among some of you. The enemy are more numerous you say. Well we are more valorous, but even this is not enough at times."

"So I bring to you the new weapon."

Giant metal doors swing open with a slam, and out lumbers a humongous creature, 25 feet tall with muscles to match. It knuckles touch the ground, much like a monkey, and its head and face is covered in thick hair. Its eyes are dead. Some of the females in the audience, especially in the ruling classes boxes scream, but many of the men laugh at their fear. They had heard rumours after all.

"That's right! We have tamed the giant, and not just this one! Hundreds more like it! There was a time we fought to bring them to extinction. Well now they will fight to bring extinction to our enemies! Imagine it if you will, these beasts hurling boulders into the enemy numbers and then charging them down. There are few men who could stand against such wrath!"

"So next month it begins! Prepare for war!"

The brown dragon glided down into the ancient volcanic crater and the dragon on watch, a smaller blue dragon, bugled a greeting and received a reply that obviously pleased him. As the dragon landed a man jumped of the neck and slid down the creatures neck to the ground. As he turned to face the entrance to the main habitation caves, he heard the voice of his dragon in his head
‘The woman’ it said, ‘she comes’
“Thank you Sarenth” the man replied as he removed his helmet. The man was wearing leather trousers, fur-lined leather boots, a long leather coat which reached to his knees, a face-mask made of silk and his helmet, which had covered the top half of his face and had two slits for him to see through.
“Where have you been Damon?”
“Patrol.” came the dragonrider’s reply.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Damon pulled down the cloth obscuring his face, “Cedric told me to grab my gear and come with him, I didn’t have any time to tell anyone.” He shrugged.
But the Dragonmaster didn’t leave the weyr for any length of time…” she started.
“He just briefed me as to my mission and sent me off.”
“But what about the length of time you were away for, patrol doesn’t take several days!” she reminded him. He just tapped his nose, kissed the woman and jogged of into the caves.

“Ah… Damon, good to have you back. No problems I assume?” Asked the man seated alone at the far end of the table, looking up from some ancient texts.
“No problems whatsoever.” Damon calmly replied. “Well… for me anyway. I fear, however, that this nation may have…”
“Sight any giants?”
“None, Cedric, except those in captivity.”
Cedric sighed and looked over the page in front of him and spoke, “I’ve never heared of someone training giants before… It seems so strange…”
“And yet seems to be happening.” Damon finished off for him. “The garrisons need to be warned, and so do the other two weyrs. Shall I send out messangers?”
“No,” Cedric replied, “We’ll need bronzes for the messages to the other weyrs, and they won’t take orders from you ‘a mere brown’” the final three words had been said mockingly,so Damon chuckled to himself. “Well, would you mind helping me out of this chair? I haven’t moved since you left.” Damon laughed as he dragged the dragon master out of his seat.
“Need any more help old man” Damon teased as they left. Cedric’s reply echoed down the corridor.
“Well…”
