A New Dawn [New Nation]

Poleski
05-01-2006, 20:54
The snow crunched with every step Senior Sergeant Aleksander Radomil took, snowflakes whirling down on his forest green combat helmet and uniform. Carefully he plodded over fallen branches and a thick blanket of pine needles, advancing through twilight to a small concrete guard cabin up ahead as the road curled to a wide gate in the middle of the forest. His hand jerked away from the cold metal grip of his pistol. Not yet, he thought. First I have to secure the rifles. While effacing the white shroud of snow from his garbs the door creaked as he landed a knock on the wood and strolled in.

In the light of a petrol lamp he saw three men, all in forest green army garments, playing cards on an empty ammunition crate. The light cast quite a shadow over the rest of the quarters, but he noticed empty liquor bottles stacked up in one corner and four assault rifles in another. The concrete floor was littered with cigarette butts and chewing gum wrappers. Two small field beds and an electric heater completed the interior.

”Comrades, the Party congress is on its way. Attention.”

As he had expected the three privates continued their leisure and they were quite drunk as well.

”Not to worry, Comrade Sergeant. We’ll be on our way.”

Aleksander positioned himself near the rifles and pulled out an ancient Tokarev TT semiautomatic pistol. The blast would be more muttered than that of an assault rifle so no one would hear. The three soldiers were too drunk to notice his dissent so he had quickly delivered three headshots in two seconds and then ripped off their uniforms, disposing of the bodies outside.

Then he turned to a small control panel in the cabin and pressed a button to make the gate swing open with a metallic “humming”. He signaled three silhouettes hiding behind a veil of pine-tree branches outside the gate. They prowled closer and silently greeted Aleksander. They were dressed in civilian attire, but still had a certain military aura of confidence and skill around them.

”Well done.”

One of them, short and sturdy, and with chiseled facial features, complimented Aleksander and asked him to supply them with the assault rifles and the uniforms. He was somewhat Jewish in appearance and was clearly in charge. He began giving out orders out to the other two. They deposited small white packages and a lot of wires around the access road and gate entrance, guiding those to a natural trench next to the road.

”Joachim, the guards of the estate are patrolling the perimeter frequently, so we need to extract from the area quite quickly.”

Aleksander said.
”I planned it all. No worries, friend. Please enjoy the start of a life free of Communism.”

“How are the preparations elsewhere going?”

“Quite well. All strategically important facilities such as airfields, power plants and factories will be ours by dawn. Our sympathizers swarm through the Army, Navy and Air Force. They are ours to command. Only the Presidential Guard will put up some resistance but they will not stand a chance against our united efforts.”

“We shall see.”

The roaring of an automobile engine alarmed them en they quickly dug themselves in near the trench. When the first of five luxurious cars turned from the main road into the forest, Aleksander’s hand moved to the console that controlled the explosives and flicked the safety valve off. The three others buried themselves in the snow and pine needles and waited anxiously. When the third car passed the gate, Aleksander flicked a switch.

Two cars were flung through the air by the shock wave of the explosion and four were ablaze. Only one was not affected and was stationary amidst of the inferno. Joachim and his men got up and hurled hand grenades underneath it, then pumping it full of rifle rounds. People crawled, some still ablaze, out of the car wreckages, screaming, but Joachim and Aleksander just kicked them in the abdominals and sent a few rounds through their charred heads.

They made sure no one was alive and then made a run for it, the first red morning light peaking through the pine trees and lighting their escape. Soon the communist regime in Poleski would fall; the Party's leaders already gone..

All night, dazzling flashes lit up the skyline over Warschaw. The macabre howling of airborne artillery rounds kept most citizens awake for the continuation of the few nighttime hours.

In the People’s Palace, Joachim and Aleksander toasted on a free nation over the mangled carcasses of Party bureaucrats, while thousands of partisans roamed the streets, setting automobiles alight and butchering final pockets of resistance.

”The nation is finally free.”

Aleksander marked with delight, the corners of his lips curling upwards.

“We can set up democratic elections within months. The Communists have left fully intact archives with specifics on the entire population. We shall act as an interim administration for now.”

Joachim coldly stated, observing the carnage around him with disgust.

“Affirmative. A communiqué to the international community shall be composed to inform them of our struggles.”

“We control the state television channels and radio stations, so we should appeal the people for their patience and request them not to engage in disorderly conduct. Still, keep the streets firmly under our control. Rioting shall be punished severely.”

“It has already been done.”

To: The International Community
From: The Former People’s Republic of Poleski

Members of the International Community,

It is my duty to inform you of the recent struggles in our isolationist nation. A small group of patriots has overturned the morbid Communist regime in a heroic coup d'état. Most members of the former rule have already been found guilty of crimes against humanity and have been punished with the penalty of death for their fiendish misdemeanors.

We have installed an interim government, managing all business concerning the nation for the coming months up to the upcoming elections, but it is already apparent that living in liberty cannot encompass living in further isolation from the rest of the world.

Therefore, we welcome the establishment of friendly relationships with foreign sovereign nations and ask for aid in reshaping our nation into a modern state with a free market economy and with extensive civil rights and political freedoms.

Yours faithfully,

Aleksander Radomil
Spokesperson for the Interim Government

A huge morass. Environmental disasters of a magnitude that'd make the mind of the average Greenpeace activist explode mixed with vast, hyperurbanised structures designed for machines, rather than humans. Dear Aleksander Radomil,

Congratulations to your recent transition from a failed system to an upcoming, bright future (To which we'd be happy to contribute).

As far as your requests - Or rather, offers - go, we'd be quite willing to provide both: Friendly relations with the Confederated FOQNEs (Encompassing roughly one fifth of the geopolitical and social entity 'Monetistan' as defined by the UN) can certainly be established - A Liaison could be present within relatively little time - and economic aid can be given as well - Specifically, we'd like to ask if the FOQNEs in question would be cleared to invest as they desire in Poleski, which I'm sure would be mutually beneficial.

Sincerely,

Jens Blom was running through some letters he got. Every day, a large packet of mail was brought to him, as he was the Minister of Foreign Cases in the Grand Duchy of Van Luxemburg.

Bill, Bill, Embassy, Intelligence, Taxes, Gotthard Incident, GLM report, Wingarde, New nation, Bill, Heh. New nation?

He quickly opened the envelope. it was a small, yellow piece of paper, sent by the Ministry. It read the letter sent out by Poleski. He immediately got to work. He started his PC, and got the phone from his desk, and asked for a conversation with Luxembourg, the capital of Van Luxemburg.

"Hartleson." An unfriendly voice on the other side announced his identity.
"Yes, Martin, Jens here. I have a small note here from a new nation called Poleski. What've we got to spare? they ask us to make them a nation like us. Can you get Economical Aid on point, Get VLT in there as soon as possible, aswell as maybe someone like VDZ & VL. I also want several millions a year going to that nation. I'll get the embassy and diplomatic mission ready."
It was silent for a while on the other side. Then Martin Hartleson started to answer.
"Should be possible."
The line was cut, as Hartleson laid the horn down.

Dear Madam,

We thank you for your warm-hearted and swift response to our communiqué. Further enhancement of the relationship between our two sovereign entities is deemed mutually beneficial and a plot of land has been cleared in Poznan to accommodate an embassy complex for your liaison and staff. We also wish to negotiate on an Open Borders agreement.

We could use your aid in revamping our antiquated petrochemical industry facilities. Our infrastructure has also been neglected for many years and all aid in rebuilding airfields, harbors, automobile highways and railroad networks is most welcome.

Investments could be utilised in nearly any sector of industry, though I wish to enquire what industrial sector you are interested in. Our mining industry is an ancient juggernaut, quite inept, and certainly not able to harvest our vast natural resources. Rigid funding of complete modernisation could crank up our profits and that of foreign investors considerably.

Yours Sincerely,

Aleksander Radomil

Your embassy will be established on a plot of land in Warschaw and two consulates are ready for construction in Poznan and Katowice. However, we can receive your diplomatic staff in alternative accommodations right away. We also wish to discuss terms for an Open Borders agreement.

The balcony of the People's Palace rocked as thousands had gathered on the Square of the Red Revolution underneath. Hurrahing and treading their feet firmly in the rhythm of a patriotic song on the cobblestones, the people made the atmosphere vivid with resonance, the atmosphere vibrant as the heat of the afternoon sun mercilessly shone down. A tall man with brown hair and a piercing blue-eyed gaze stepped up the balcony edge and the mob fell silent with total reverence. It was remarkable, only the sound of birds warbling and fluttering in the gutter above could be noticed.

The man, Aleksander Radomil, spoke:

"My fellow friends and countrymen, today we are truly free. No Communist pig shall ever trudge on our fertile black soil again. We shall set up a competent military to protect ourselves from their reaching arm and repulse them with courage should they ever attempt a cowardice assault on our great nation.”

“We have received foreign aid to strengthen our infrastructure and to create a flexible and potent free market economy. Any man performing hard labour shall no longer collect minimal wages barely sufficient to feed a family, but shall instead receive full remuneration for his efforts."

“Civil rights and political freedoms will be thrusted to higher levels and shall be an example to the rest of the free world. A constitution is being set up as we speak”

“This is a New Dawn for our people, this is just the beginning."

"Long live Poleski, in freedom!”

A bright smile broke through Aleksander’s stiff countenance and the crowd went wild. He waved and got back into the palace, where Joachim and his new cabinet congratulated him on a job well done.

The elections had proven it remarkably easy for the partisans, with the cunning Aleksander as their charismatic leader, able to daze gigantic crowds with his blazing rethorics. His political party, Honour and Homeland, had defeated all opposition by a landslide and had established a new government, libertarian on economical issues and more conservative on social problems.

The people were about to experience if the new rule was up to its task.

We will immediately send our Diplomatic Mission to Poleski. We hope they will arrive shortly and will not stop at the Tax-Free shopping at the airport, like last time we sent out a Diplomatic Mission. Now, to get back to our subject, an Open Borders agreement is possible, although we would like to request the right to control possible suspects of drug trafficking at ferries and aircraft heading to the continent of Van Luxemburg.

Also, our Intelligence Agency VLIA has also advised our Ministry of Defence to send out a few Military Experts, to help building your Military. We hope they can be welcomed in a short while, on the Poleski Soil. It is also possible to deliver arms of all sorts (mainly European small arms, vehicles and aircraft, aswell as vessels, if needed) to your nation. We shall further discuss the details of the Open Borders agreement with your envoy, but we have no difficulties with narcotics being checked on. It's just that business has easier access to both our national entities, promoting mutual trade.

On our military issues, your experts are most welcome to advice on training and armaments issues. We have currently full stocks of ancient Soviet hardware, which are quite worn out. A small pile will be retained to allow us to form a force with mixed Soviet and NATO equipment to improve the versatility and flexibility of the Poleski Self Defence Force. As the overhaul of the Poleski infrastructure commenced, a state-of-the-art transportation system slowly superseded the old railway grid. The old harbour facilities were broken down and replaced by top-of-the-line cranes and storage provisions. New tarmac was put down at the international airfield and modern terminals, hangers and maintenance facilities were erected to accommodate a wide flow of passengers and aircraft. Many foreign companies participated in the reconditioning of the infrastructure and there was quite a swirl of money from both investors and donators pouring in.

It took the staff a while to get the decryption codes - After all, having no previous relations with Poleski, there were no shared codes, either, which made reading the encoded communique something of a pain - but eventually, and after a few fairly hectic flights and low-level dialogues, the necessary tools were acquired.

A while of decoding, a few dialogues with the various corporate entities included in the Confederated FOQNEs, and some minor things - Where the hell was Sakura? - Denise could go on replying, for once happy to escape the Unionised sniper outdoors without him even trying to fire.

Dear Aleksander Radomil,

I'm happy that you agree with me - us - with regards to mutually beneficial relations. As far as the embassy is concerned - perfect, though I suppose that for the sake of establishing embassies as fast as possible, it might be a good idea to not wait for a completely new building to be built, but instead to occupy an existing one - If free, that is - with sufficient access to informational and material infrastructures as well as sufficient space.

As far as investments from our various FOQNEs are concerned, I'm sure they'll happily invest everywhere they can - Unlike our political or military performance, our economic performance is among the most impressive ones in the world, and we're always eager to expand, no matter the sector.

Sincerely,

Things still had time, of course, but nonetheless - The industry was getting excited. Plans were drawn up, the same was true for schedules. Information was acquired, people hired - If they were lucky, they'd be able to manage some considerable profits.

We congratulate your nation's success in overthrowing the totalitarian regime, not communist, even if it were communist, it wouldn't have worked anyway, as communism is an economic ideology too idealistic to work. We would like to extend our hand in assistance, both economically, diplomatically, and military. Beyond this we would also like to grant your nation as special offer, that you may establish a military base on Turetel with the intent of training.

If you agree you will be allowed to send nearly 280,000 men and supplies to this base. As a nation that still grapples with finding and deporting supporters of an old regime, we will offer you specific training in Special Operation Teams (SOT) and have our elite 74th Infantry train your men on how best to combat a guerrilla warfare enemy or numerically superior force.

On top of this offer, Turetel would like to extend foreign aid in the way of 25 Billion USD to your nation, with its sole purpose to be rebuilding your civil infrastructure.

We await your response.

While armed forces, spearheaded by the disciplined Angermanland's heavy infantry company, crushed struggling communist remnants, further innovations and reorganisations of the nation continued.

A constitution was released, a judicial branch installed and a federal administration system was designed to grant all sixteen provinces certain self-control and self-governing privileges. An embassy programme was embarked on to start involvement with the international community. The first self-produced automobiles were rolling down the production lines, mineral resources were carefully mined and the negotiations with an arms contractor for all services of the Armed Forces had commenced. Advanced glass fiber communication cables were stationed to provide the people access to the internet.

Soon, Poleski would be a modern nation.

Dear Sirs,

Your financial aid welcomed with great indebtedness and will be directed to the civilian infrastructure. An embassy exchange to ensure proper coordination of further cooperation between our great nations is proposed and a plot along the banks of the river Vistula on the Embassy Row is already reserved for a consulate.

We wish to send a small Reinforced Light Infantry Brigade, 3,000 personnel, marked as a Special Forces Unit, to embark on your instruction course and station them at a small military base in your territory. They will be shipped within hours.

Yours Sincerely,

Adrian Jurek

Dear Adrian Jurek,

I understand. As far as investments go, I'll make certain that our respective partners are doing just that - Investing. In the sectors you mentioned, that is.

As far as official relations, that is, an embassy, is concerned, this will be perfectly satisfactory, and we shall send a liaison & staff within the shortest available timeframe - About a week, I suppose.

Sincerely,

~ Denise Hampton

In Monetistan - Well, in parts of the vast and chaotic carpet of intermingling sovereignities and competition - interest was raised. Small notices were written, a few keys on a keyboard were hit, messages sent...

In the real world, funds moved, and an economic avalanche started its trip towards Poleski.
