GRUMMAN F-14D TOMCAT

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Grumman F-14D Tomcat is an all-weather interceptor fighter aircraft. Its intended primary mission is intercepting the enemy's other fighter jets or bombers or cruise missiles using its on-board radar and super long range missiles as well as by denying airspace to the enemy within visual range. It is also capable of interdicting the enemy's supply routes as well as attacking pinpoint ground targets using various free-fall ordnance.A secondary tactical reconaissance missions can also be undertaken if the according pods are used.
The aircraft features a tandem cockpit sitting 2 crews. One is the pilot who sits in front and the other is a weapons systems officer(WSO) who sits in the back. The WSO mans the on-board radar as well as the beyond-visual-range(BVR) weapons though the pilot also has control over these devices. The cockpit sits in a long slender fuselage linked to a gothic wing of triangular plan shape which provides as much as 50% of the total lift area. The wings are swept and use variable geometry to attain the desires lift properties.Directionnal stability is controlled by 2 widely separated and canted fins which sit on top of the engine nacelles. Two powerful afterburning turbofans power the aircraft and reside inside nacelles which are located under the gothic wing. The nacelles also support the two slab tailplanes which provides pitch and roll control.
The F-14 is quite large by fighter standard but is nonetheless quite agile. It is a force to be reckoned with in the modern sky with its powerful radar with extremely long-range and good acceleration and endurance. However, while it can hold its own in a dogfight other more agile fighters should be used if close-in fighting is expected. It is first and foremost an interceptor although with very good flight qualities in the hands of a trained pilot.

SERVICE HISTORY:

The F-14D replaced the F-106D Delta Dart in Home Guard Reserve Interceptor Regiments in 1996.In 2006 the F-14D has been in service with the Home Guard Air Force and Fleet Air Arm for 21 years.During all these years it proved its value as an interceptor in many mock combats during exercise held in the numerous Lemieuxville free fire range. The F-14D is slated for replacement in 2010 when MiG-31M Foxhounds will be trickled down from Conscript units all over the country.Until then it is well poised to serve its intended role.

Raytheon AIM-54C Phoenix

GENERAL DATA

Type: The Raytheon AIM-54C Phoenix is an air-2-air ultra-long range intercept missile which uses an active radar array system and inertial navigation guidance. This means that the launching aircraft need not guide the missile with its on-board radar. The radar is only used to get a fix on the last known location of the target and then a firing solution is downloaded into the missile's brain and it flies to its target with all sensors silent until about 20 km from its target. From there it activates its on-board radar and guides itself onto the target. The C version uses digital processors which are much more precise and jamming-proof than its predecessor's analog units. The C version also a more powerful and longer-ranged rocket motor enabling the AIM-54C to reach out farther than previous versions. Its on-board radar array is not very powerful though so its best used against non-stealthy aircrafts and cruise missiles.Nonetheless its a very powerful interception missile with an incredible reach which many other intercept missiles don't have.It is the perfect missile to take out incoming bombers due to its very heavy warhead.Because of its powerful warhead it is also a very good missile to take out enemy fighters at extremely long ranges.
Lenght: 3.90 meters
Fuselage diameter: 0.38 meters
Wingspan: 0.90 meters
Warhead: directionnal blast fragementation 60 kg warhead which is proximity fused.

Raytheon AIM-54C+ High Power Phoenix

GENERAL DATA

Type: The Raytheon AIM-54C+ High Power Phoenix is an air-2-air ultra-long range intercept missile which uses an active radar array system and inertial navigation guidance. This means that the launching aircraft need not guide the missile with its on-board radar. The radar is only used to get a fix on the last known location of the target and then a firing solution is downloaded into the missile's brain and it flies to its target with all sensors silent until about 10 km from its target. From there it activates its on-board radar and guides itself onto the target. The C+ version is an update of the previous AIM-54C with the AIM-120C radar instead of the less advanced one found in the C version. The digital processors have also been updated as well as the on-board software making much more difficult to jamm.Under testing the C+ was impervious to all the latest radar jammers in service in Lemieuxville and also some up-to-date foreign equipment. This combination of state of the art seeker and its very long maximum engagement range makes it the best ultra long range missile which Lemieuxville's industries have to offer. There are some longer reaching missiles in service now but none of them combine the excellent target lock-on characteristics and the range of the AIM-54C+.Also updated are some maintenance related items which makes this missile easier to store and keep in good conditions during its intended shelf life.
Lenght: 3.90 meters

Raytheon AIM-120C AMRAAM "Slammer"

GENERAL DATA

Type: The Raytheon AIM-120C Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile is an air-2-air medium range intercept/dogfight missile which uses an active radar array system and inertial navigation guidance. Also the AMRAAM can lock-on before launch meaning there's no minimum range for engagement of targets and it can thus be used effectively in a dogfight situation. The C version has smaller fins than previous versions and also incorporate some guidance and software modifications. The smaller fins means that the missile can be easily carried in internal weapon bays or that more of them can be carried due to its reduced size. Also when used on weapon pylons the streamlined fins reduce drag cause by the carriage of the missile and also reduce slightly the RCS of mounted weapons when combined with low-observable designed pylons it greatly improves the aircraft's stealthy characteristics when carrying external loads. The update software and guidance systems means the missile can more easily discriminate target thus improvins its accuracy and kill probability. It is also more impervious to jamming methods. The AMRAAM is a state of the art missile and is one of the best in its class. It makes for an excellent medium range missile as well as a good dogfigth or self-defense one.

Raytheon/Texas Instruments AGM-88C HARM Block 5

GENERAL DATA

Type: The Raytheon/Texas Instruments AGM-88C HARM Block 5 is an air-2-ground anti-radiation missile. The High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile uses a passive radar array to monitor ground-based targeting and search radars radiations used by anti-aircraft systems. It uses this passive array to guide itself onto its targets and also uses a GPS-coupled inertial navigation central to plot a course up to its target.Target data and position is dowloaded by the aicracft into the missile's brain so a compatible electronic warfare system must be carried by the launch aircraft. There are several ways to evade a radiation-guided missile such as the HARM one of them being shutting down the entire enemy array to confuse the seeker head of the radar or simply throw it off course. However, the HARM can remember the last position of its intended target and use its INS central to strike at its target nonetheless. Its intended targets are radar emitters on the ground and GPS-jammers and other ECM devices which are powerful enough to be monitored by the radar array. This means anything more powerful than hand-held devices or troop carried battlefield monitoring radars can be engaged by the HARM.It is a very good missile for its intended role albeit with a limited range which means modern long range SAMs must be engaged by other means or other types of missiles.Nonetheless, the HARM makes for a very sophisticated ally in the SEAD role as well as in the self-defense of strike aircrafts against SAM and AAA threats as long as the carrying aircraft carries the associated EW equipment.
Lenght: 4.14 meters
Fuselage diameter: 0.25 meters
Wingspan: 1.02 meters
Warhead: high-explosive fragmentation 56 kg warhead which is proximity fused.
Launch weight: 360 kilogramms

Description: The Mk.80 series are a general purpose bombs which use an high explosive warhead encased in a scored streamlined container which attaches to the weapons pylons or attachment bays of various aircrafts. The configuration of the container is modular and is often used as the warhead in guided bombs it can be coupled with several different fuses and tail sections. The bombs are unguided and rely on the skill of the pilot as well as the on-board sighting systems. The bombs are fused using different fuses a list of the compatible ones follows; contact fuse this one detonates the explosives on contact with the target best used against hardened stationary targets, delayed contact fuse this one is armed when contact is made with the target and then detonates 5 seconds later it is best used against runways where it can burrow into the ground and explode later and is also useful against infantry concentration, Daisy Cutter this is an airburst fuse it relies on a long rod of differing lenghts following the wield of the bomb and detonates the explosives above ground this is deadly against dug-in infantry, altimeter fuse again an airburst which is pre-set before flight and detonates at the pre-set altitude best used against infantry. Also different tail sections can be used the most common being the Mk.15 consisting of 4 deployable metal fins which serves as airbrakes at low-level preventing bomb debris hitting the launch aircraft and giving greater accuracy.Only the Mk.81 and Mk.82 can be thus equipped becoming Mk.81/SD or Mk.82/SD "Snakeye".A BSU-49/B inflatable airbrake can also be attached to all Mk.80 series bombs. The inflatable airbrake uses ram air to inflate a ballon which brakes the bomb and then slows its descent to the ground it is adaptable to all Mk.80 series them becoming Mk.80/AIR.It serves the same purpose as the SD kit. There are other more specific variations of the Mk.80 series bombs but those are described separately.

Mk.20 Rockeye Cluster Bomb

GENERAL DATA

Description: The Mk.20 Rockeye is a bomblets container using a Mk.339 timed fuse which dispenses the bomblets after a pre-set flight time. This is set from inside the launch aircraft but it can also be set manually by EOD crews. The Rockeye container contains 247 dual-purpose shaped charge bomblets. Each one of them contains a 157 grams bomblet able to penetrate about 190 mm of RHA-equivalent armor. The Rockeye is mainly used against armored vehicles formations but due to its scored bomblet case it is also mildly efficient against soft-skinned vehicles or personnel.Due to its penetration capability it can disable most main battle tanks when the bomblet strikes the turret roof or engine deck where most tank's armor is the thinnest. It is a proven weapon which has been in Lemieuxville service for a long time.

CBU-78 Gator Cluster Bomb

GENERAL DATA

Description: The Gator cluster bomb uses the SUU-58/B container and a Mk.339 fuse to dispense bomblets after a pre-set flight time. This is set from inside the launch aircraft but it can also be set manually by EOD crews. The Gator contains 60 mines, 45 each of the BLU-91/B type and 15 each of the BLU-92/B type. The BLU-91/B is an anti-tank mine which uses a small shaped charge to defeat the belly of tanks and armored vehicles. It uses a magnetometer to detect an approaching vehicle and then determine the best point of detonation under the floor of said vehicle. The magnetometer can be set at different sensibilities accounting for amount of metal which it detects. This way the BLU-91/B can be set to detonate only when a main battle tank passes over it or any other kind of vehicle given that the operator knows what kind of vehicle the mine will encounter. This is set before the flight by EOD crews. The BLU-92/B is an anti-personnel mine it uses trip wires as its detonator and is enough to take out one or 2 personnel who step on it.The Gator should be used with discernment since its bomblets become active as soon as they leave the ground and are quite difficult to get rid of should your troops have to go through the drop area.Nonetheless, this is a very fast and cost effective way of creating minefields to deny the enemy access to a certain area.

GBU-16 Paveway II laser-guided bomb

GENERAL DATA

Description: The GBU-16 Paveway II is a 393kg-class laser guided bomb.It consists of a normal Mk.83 LDGP bomb but fitted with a Paveway II laser-guidance kit.The Paveway II uses reflected laser emissions from the target and guides the bomb within the cone created by such laser emissions. Thus the target must be illuminated with a laser designator of some sort either airborne or ground based. The circular error probability of the GBU-16 is 9 meters meaning it will strike its target within a 9-meter radius of where the laser energy is reflected. It is a good and cheap laser guided bomb although its destructive power is limited and is not very useful againt hardened buildings. The GBU-16 should be used against tanks or normal buildings and other kind of expensive soft targets.

2.75 inches Hydra-70 air-to-ground unguided rocket

GENERAL DATA

Type: The Hydra-70 rocket is a modular 70mm unguided rocket. It is not guided and thus relies on the launching aircraft sighting system and pilot's skills. The Hydra-70 is modular in design being composed of a standardized fuselage housing a standardized rocket motor and differing warheads a list of which follows.M151 blast fragmentation warhead, it consists of a 4 kg warhead contained in a scored metal enveloppe which spreads shrapnel when it explodes. It is best used against infantry or against soft skinned vehicles.M156 white phosporus warhead. This is mainly a target marking round though it also has incendiary properties. It is best used for marking targets when in a FAC mission.M229 blast fragmentation warhead, it is basically a bigger M151 with a 6 kg warhead. The biggest difference being that its more powerful and can be used against personnel, soft skinned vehicles and lightly armored vehicles like APCs and VCIs.M255A1 flechette warhead. This is a miniature version of a tank "Beehive" warhead it contains 1 179 60-grain hardened steel flechettes. Those flechettes spread when the proximity fuze opens the container with ram air.It is a very powerful anti-aircraft weapon if one can strike the target and its incredibly deadly against infantry.M261 MPSM.The MPSM is submunition container which comprise a M439 fuse which spreads the submunitions at a set distance from the launch aircraft. It is effective out to 7 000 meters and it must be set before launch by the launch aircraft. The MPSM contains 9 M73 subminitions which consists of small shaped-charges encased in a scored ram air braked container. When the submunitions are released they will immediately detonate hopefully onto its targets and will also spread a lot of shrapnel. It is thus very effective against soft skinned vehicles or lightly armored ones and personnel.Due to the way it functions the rocket placement need not be very accurate since one of the 9 submunitions will most likely strike the target.M274 smoke tracer. This is a practive round it projects a smoke trail behind the rocket.M267 smoke signature submunition. This is a traceable round since a smoke trail developps behind the rocket and it is used to quicly create a multi-spectrum smoke screen using 8 smoke canisters carried internally.M257 this an illumination round. The Hydra-70 is a cheap rocket but due to its modular properties it can become a deadly weapon when used properly. However, it is most effective en masse when fired from different rocket launcher tubes or systems.
