*A fairly large, blue-green planet comes into view. From space, one can see the planet’s continents- they look like larger versions of North America and Eurasia. Surrounding the planet are multiple platforms, capital ships, and fighters. This is Sevaris Prime- metropolis of the Sevarisian Empire.*
*From hyperspace, a lone shuttle appears. It’s a standard Lambda-class, with the national insignia on the wings. It flies to the planet, weaving through the atmosphere and tall buildings of Imperial City, the seat of government. The shuttle touches down for a gentle landing at Chatham Palace. Out steps a fairly tall, slender man in his mid 30s. He appears tired and worn, as the duties of Grand Admiral would do to any man. Despite this, his silver, longish hair and dress uniform were immaculate. A Lieutenant steps to meet him.*
“Admiral, Her Majesty awaits you in her chambers. She has been expecting you for some time, and wishes to know why you are late- you know that lateness is unbecoming of one of the Empress’ officers.”
Grand Admiral Andrei Rybalko smiled, and nodded, “I’m quite aware. Now has she said why my presence is required?”
“I have not heard, sir. She said it was of ‘utmost’ importance that you came.”
Rybalko’s smile widened. “Very good. Dismissed, Lieutenant.”
*Inside the Imperial Chambers*
Andrei walked into the vast and dark chambers, looking for the Empress. He soon saw her looking out a window on the far end, and approached her. He bowed to her, as was custom. She motioned for the guards to leave. As soon as they left, she ran into his arms and embraced him warmly.
The Empress was a fairly young woman to be a major ruler. At age 29, she was one of the youngest rulers in Sevarisian history- and one of the most attractive as well. Her tall stature and relatively voluptuous physique caused many men to fall for her- but there was only one man she truly loved. And he had finally come home.
“Andrei, Andrei…it’s been too long. It’s seemed like ages since we’ve last been together,” she said as she kissed him.
“Only been a month, my dear Yuna…not terribly long, I’d say.” He continued to kiss her. “Or was it?” They continued for a few moments, until Yuna stepped back and said something.
“There is actually something we need to speak about, Andrei- a matter of national importance.”
Andrei was intrigued. “Really? So there was actually a reason for my recall home apart from the fact that you missed me,” he chuckled.
“Remember who you’re talking to, Admiral,” she said in a curt tone. “Now, listen carefully.” Yuna pressed a button on the wall nearby, and a giant holodisplay appeared from the floor. It was a map of the known galaxy- showing the Empire in red, against the backdrop of the ‘Unknown’, that is, the sections that the Empire had not explored.
“I want to change that, Andrei. Our Empire must grow and expand- if not in territory, then in knowledge of our galactic neighbours. We know they are out there- but we do not know them. I made it clear to my people that I would end the foolish policy of isolation- our Empire cannot be allowed to stagnate. What I ask you to do is to explore and learn—and tell me all that you find. I trust you are up to this?”
Andrei bowed, appearing a bit overwhelmed. Every Sevarisian child had been taught that their Empire was the only enlightened one in the galaxy- and now, it seemed, that was all collapsing. But, he was a loyal officer of the Crown, and had to accept his mission.
“It shall be done, my Empress.”
THREE MONTHS LATER- SAUGENAY
*Saugenay is a major naval base and military world. Many factories, foundaries, and other defence facilities are located here, as well as the 4th Fleet. Otherwise, the planet is a fairly pastoral and calm world, with major farming industries as well.*
*NAVAL STATION, ON THE PLAINS*
Naval Station Duplessis was unique to the Empire. It was one of the few naval bases based on land, where smaller ships such as the Victory-class and the Indomitable-class could land. Primarily, though, Duplessis was home to fighter wings.
It was here that the “Great Expedition”, as it was being dubbed, would be launched. A modified Indomitable-class had been stationed here for weeks, being outfitted with latest sensor, scanner, droid, and computer equipment for the coming mission. The voyage was finally going to commence today- RSS Sadowa would set off on one of the most important operations ever devised by the Royal Sevarisian Navy.
Grand Admiral Rybalko and Admiral Blaine Taschereau, who would be commanding the Sadowa, attended a parade of the 12th Division of the Royal Sevarisian Marines, being held prior to the voyage today. As the troopers passed the official legation, Rybalko had some last minute advice for Taschereau:
“Now, Blaine, remember- you do not fire first. If fired upon, feel free to retaliate and head for home- I do not intend to have our first attempts at diplomatic contact deliberately foiled. Other than that, you’ve been invested with full negotiating power on behalf of HM Government- so don’t screw it up.”
Taschereau felt a bit annoyed about this. Here he was, a career officer and man of 60, who had devoted all his life to the Navy- and he was taking orders from an upstart 30 something who, though he was a tactical genius, hadn’t seen half of what he’d seen. Despite this, Taschereau acknowledged Rybalko’s advice with a short “Thank you, sir.”
Within a few hours, all of the troops, fighters, and other equipment had been loaded on the Sadowa, and she was ready for takeoff. Slowly but surely, the great ship’s repulsor drive engaged, and she was off the ground and heading into the air. Her landing gear retracted and soon engaged the sublight drive. In a few minutes, she was nothing more than a speck to the observers on the ground.
A few hours later, Sadowa entered hyperspace and destiny. With her were the hopes and dreams of an entire nation.
