In an announcement today the Prime Minister issued a statement of his government's intention of forming a Scientific Research Council ,with goals in a wide variety of fields. This Council would be formed from the finest minds in Qutar in their respective fields. This Council is being formed to further our understanding of the world around us, no longer will corporations control what research occurs. For example diseases that mainly affect the less affluent, are perhaps overlooked by the Pharmaceutical corporations. This is just one example in one field, this council will help bring many breakthroughs, that will improve the lives of Qutari citizens. The Council would work together with government, but would be separate from government in the sense that politics would not influence the council.

In reaction to the news some critics of the current government have pointed out that in recent months the economy has been suffering a small recession, with unemployment rising by 3%, and living standards falling, and that by ploughing money into this venture, money that could be used for other programs that will encourage our economy to return to the growth figures of six months ago. Other critics are pointing out that the Council will further hurt the economy, as in the example cited by the Prime Minster, that the Council will destroy such industries as the Pharmaceutical business, as there will be unfair competition with the Council.

In response to the criticisms levelled at the project the Prime Minister speaking at a press conference in Cëre, responded by saying that yes, the economy may be experiencing a slowdown in recent months in terms of growth, but that the economy will be growing fast again within the next six months. The reason for the slowdown in growth has been the transition from the Military Dictatorship that gave businesses handouts for certain favours, and that in this new period of the economy, it first needs to restructure itself. He pointed out that even during this slowdown that Qutar has a healthy trade surplus of $771 million on which to rely on while Qutar goes through this period of slow growth. To second criticism the Prime Minister spoke with passion of how this was one of the main objectives of forming the Council, that companies do not have the welfare of the nation as their priority, only profits. That this Council could do great good, cure diseases, help medical science stride forward and focus scientific research in a way never seen before.

In a recent poll it seems Qutar agrees with its Prime Minister; with 96% of people in favour, 3% unsure and 1% against the idea.
