The FPD Decides 2005/06 - Mandragora Leadership Convention

This is PNN - the world's #1 news source.

Welcome to our special coverage of FPD Decides 2005/06 - The Leadership Convention. I'm Niles Parker here at the Vestibulo di Constazion'e Commercio in Mandragora, where 114,000 FPD members paid over two hundred douros for the ability to vote in person and be part of the magic, while another 16.5 million will cast their votes via new internet-based real-time voting technology. In two days' time, Pacitalia's largest political party will have chosen its new leader, and the final chapter in the legacy of Prime Minister Timothy Ell will begin its descent to the end.

Many of the estimated 114,000 delegates have already begun pouring into hotels here in Mandragora anticipating the Wednesday afternoon vote. And while they do, we will cover this convention from start to finish, profiling the candidates, explaining the voting process, and revealing the winner, who, barring a PSC miracle, it is safe to say will become Pacitalia's next prime minister. The heir to Timothy Ell's throne, the beacon from within his or her predecessor's shadow.

(OOC: International coverage welcome. This is a multi-post thread by me, so much more to come, most obviously the vote itself on Wednesday.)

Welcome back, I'm Livus Helvutum. Before our commercial break, I mentioned our story on Pacitalian politics. We have a clip from a press conference by Titus Celmaetus, which we'll be showing in a moment. But now, there is a Federation for Progressive Democrats convention getting underway in the Pacitalian city of Mandragora, and over 100,000 delegates are expected to attend. This, once again, shows us the strong influence and power of the FPD party, the group which has steered Pacitalia in the direction that "has proven to maximize the nation's full political potential," in the words of Titus Celmaetus.

{cuts to press conference clip}

[Emperor Titus Celmaetus] "As I aired, offhand, before, I pledge my full support to the FPD political party. This is the well-respected group that nudged Pacitalia in the right direction during the course of the past two administrations, first established relations with the United Empire, and the party that has proven to maximize the nation's full political potential. The number of people in attendance to the FPD convention and the die-hard supporters of Tim Ell are reinforcements to my statements."

{studio}

Indeed, Emperor Celmaetus has always "admired Tim from afar," as he put it, and he says that he "closely identifies with Ell and FPD supporters."

Welcome to...
The Imperial Yaforite News Service

With Rbatrik Kuernos...
Yualdo Kintara...
Davidram Gitral...
Juita Fragoren for traffic...
Gudamen Havernam for weather...
And Kiyatar Povan for politics...

Rbatrik Kuernos: Hello and welcome to the Imperial Yaforite News Service. Today we bring you a special program - a analyzation of Pacitalian politics and the upcoming Federation of Progressive Democrats convention.

Yualdo Kintara: And also, we bring you the latest stories of the day, and get comprehensive interviews, clips, and other exciting features, so do not go away! But first, traffic, with Juita Fragoren.

Juita Fragoren: Thanks, Yualdo! We have got low travel times, 13 on the GFK, 24 minutes outbound, 47 minutes to Crawfract, and 18 down the Expressway. Watch out; there are three accidents along the Kieora, that brings a Gaper's, adding to an already-expansive delay of 79 minutes just to Uderna. We've got standard express times on all the other highways, half an hour the average. Traffic brought to you by Fring Mint Candies. Back to you, Rbatrik.

Kuernos: Thanks, Juita. Now, back to the news. Juita mentioned the three accidents on the Keiora - they're just a sample of the huge amount of accidents that are occuring around Ajer at rush hour. Some attribute this to a new fashion statement in cars. There seem to be more sports cars on the road. As seen in this interview, no car company has publicly come up with the blame. See, each of the spokesmen deny it. But a government panel will investigate it.

Kintara: Fires are breaking out north of East Ajer. Authorities of the ranger who own the national park say that it is not thier fault. An increase in murders, as on this chart, also show the probability of arson. More fighting occured on Ntac Island, today, as the Second Armada engaged Generian forces there. That's all for today's news, folks.

Davidram Gitral: We'll give you much more news after a break, but first, the promised programming - a comprehensive look at Pacitalian politics. For that we bring in our political analyist, Kiyatar Povan, as well as the Professor of Pacitalian History at Cardorel University, Hyjalt Pintamy, and the Yaforite Ambassador to Pacitalia, Jyorin Kiamelar. Welcome to the IYNS.

Kiyatar Povan, Hyjalt Pintamy, Jyorin Kiamelar: Thank you for having me.

Gitral: Mr.Povan, who do you think is the front-runner to be selected as "Ell's successor" and why? Do you think that anyone can be "Ell's successor" in any sense of that phrase?

Povan: After covering this election for quite a long time, I have to say that there is a clear front-runner - the man who some call Timothy Ell's heir. I am, of course, talking about Constantino Sorantanali. However, there are many other candidates on the ballot including Ciocanto premerati Mariana Cosima Vincenza, Potenza mayor Castel Devante, and others, including Gioachino Severo, Geronimo Ruggeriatino, Alberto Quinistate, and Maria Contisti Raglia.

Gitral: We pause for a short advertising break, and will be back soon.

OOC:Sorry, I had to finish halfway, but I'll probably finish later.

Transcript of Radio Coverage of the Federation of Progressive Democrats Leadership Convention
Pacitalian Soviet Broadcasting Syndicate Residency
Mandragora, Democratic Capitalist Republic of Pacitalia

Hello local Pacitalian comrades and international listeners, this is Alexai Borenkov speaking. I’m here covering the 2005/06 FPD Leadership Convention. As of December 26th, the Federation of Progressive Democrats have began meeting at their annual Leadership Convention in order to decide the new party leader. This is the final chapter for Mr. Ell - thankfully - and will end his political career as a “popular among capitalists, loathed amongst Meritates” hound.

But I’m not here to slander Mr. Ell - that much - I’m here to cover the Leadership Convention. Thanks to local Pacitalian Communist Party cooperation, the SBS has been able to set up in a local hotel a block from the convention center. Capable of even hearing the shouting of some 100,000 plus Progressive Democrats, I can feel the headaches coming on now.

Here with us now is local community leader - and Progressive Democrat - Marcuse Carvaniscu.

Carvaniscu: Hello.

Borenkov: Welcome Mr. Carvanscu. Your name is Romanian correct?

Carvaniscu: Yes, yes it is. I’m head of a small political organization, the Romanian Progressive Democrat League of Mandragora. It’s a small faction within the FPD. Mostly deals with the political climate around here.

Borenkov: I’m sure...

Carvaniscu: Excuse me?

Borenkov: Oh, nothing, just reading over one of your speeches. I quote:

”I do believe that the Soviet Union is a leading cause of evil in this world. They have ruthlessly slaughtered our Romanian brothers and sisters back in the Old Country, they have refused to enact democratic reforms, and have tried - at any cost - to undermine the Federation of Progressive Democracts.

“I do not doubt that their RAFA thugs have instigated gang and ethnic violence in the province of Meritates and have blamed it on the Pacitalian government. I believe that the Pacitalian Defense Forces should immediately delcare martial law in the province of Meritates, ban the Pacitalian Communist Party, and deport all Soviet citizens residing in Pacitalia.”

Borenkov: Now, what would make you believe such a thing?

Carvaniscu: How could I not? Paramilitary units under the control of the CPP walk the streets in Meritates carrying Soviet manufactored armor, assault rifles, and boots. It’s already a proven fact that the CPSU gives mo-

Borenkov: Exactly who do you think will be the next FPD party leader?

Carvaniscu: Eh, no idea really. I wouldn’t mind if any of them were elected. They’re all good men and will fill Mr. Ell’s shoes nicely.

Borenkov: Oh really? What is your opinion on Mr. Ell’s alleged connections with counter-revolutionary - terrorist - organizations within the North American Soviet Socialist Republics?

Carvaniscu: Oh, God... That’s nothing more than rumors and Communist fabricated propaganda.

Borenkov: Not according to a recent report from the Committee for State Security [KGB]. According to the report, Mr. Ell “has extensive ties to counter-revolutionary and terrorist groups residing in the Mississippian and Alabamian SSR’s.” What do you think of that?

Carvaniscu: Are you going to ask me about the Leadership Convention, or did you just invite me here to slander my country?

Borenkov: [laughing] Oh yes, the Leadership Convention. Why do you think the FPD has made those who wish to vote pay? Seems reminiscent of the American suffrage taxes after the Civil War.

Carvaniscu: It allows for the FPD to function effectively.

Borenkov: Are you sure it’s not to insure that poorer canidates aren’t allowed to be put into the pot?

Carvaniscu: Positive.

Borenkov: Well, Mr. Carvaniscu, I am glad to have you here with us in the next few days.

Listeners, over the next few days we will be having political analysts, FPD party members, CPP members, and other guests from Pacitalia to give their input. I thank you for listening to Borenkov’s Political Junction for coverage of the 2005/06 Federation of Progressive Democrats Leadership Convention and hope you will continue listening for your local broadcast.

Breaking news: 3 of 6 candidates eliminated in first FPD ballot

MANDRAGORA (PNN) -- In an interesting development, the first ballot of the Federation of Progressive Democrats' leadership convention has resulted in the quick elimination of half the candidates for the party's top job.

Frederico Poragunale, Alberto Quinistate and Maria Contisti Raglia were all eliminated thanks to the Factor Rule, which means candidates that receive less than 10,0% of the vote are automatically eliminated. In other situations where there are no candidates tagging less than 10,0%, a "plan B" of sorts occurs where the candidate receiving the least amount of votes regardless of amount will be eliminated. In this convention, however, Poragunale, Quinistate and Contisti Raglia were eliminated, polling 6,7%, 3,9% and 2,9%, respectively.

No surprise were the top two finishers: Constantino Sorantanali, the odds-on favourite, led the first ballot with just over 38% of the vote, while Mariana Cosima Vincenza was a solid second with 30%. Potenza mayor Castel Devante finished third with 18,5% and that figure suggests he may end up the next victim after the results of the second ballot are released.

The FPD will be going to a second ballot yet again, since no candidate tagged the requisite 60,0% to become party leader. An FPD leadership convention has never ended after just one ballot. Most conventions go to three or four ballots; the only one to end after two ballots was the 1920 convention, which elected Luigi Sfra to party leader. He became prime minister in 1921.

The second ballot begins at 5.00pm CPDT*.

Hola y libertad para todos, I am Jorge Soltesz and tonight we have a very special edition of World Watch: Prime Time. Earlier today I interviewed via satellite Marco Antutto Camoranesi, the leader of the Margherian Progressive Democrats. We sat down this morning before balloting began.

Soltesz: Señor Camoranesi, thank you for taking this time to talk with us.

Camoranesi: No problem, Jorge.

Soltesz: Now we all know that Prime Minister Ell is due to step down in February and new federal elections will decide the next government. My question to you is who do you honestly believe could lead the FPD toward electoral success.

Camoranesi: To be honest, Jorge, the Federation of Progressive Democrats will definitely come out ahead come spring. With that, though, I must say that Constantino Sorantanali not only has what is necessary to lead the FPD, he has what it takes to become the next Prime Minister.

Soltesz: What have been the failings of the Ell Government?

Camoranesi: Excuse me?

Soltesz: Sir, we've talked about the future of the FPD now it's time to talk about the past. My viewers, the people of Oltremare, would like to know what Pacitalians think about the shortcomings of the otherwise lauded Ell.

Camoranesi: The Prime Minister has done all that he possibly could. He has left our nation better than he has received it.

Soltesz: Is that right...what about the status of Margheria?

Camoranesi: Margheria is now and will always be a part of Pacitalia. It is only through the actions of a small group of radicals and malcontents that there is any pretext of a Margherian "Question".

Soltesz: If this group is as small as you, the FPD and Prime Minister Ell claim then why is the NEIP expected to pick up several seats in the upcoming national election?

Camoranesi: That is the democratic process at work. Oltremare itself has a radical fringe, the Partido Revolución Democrática e Independencia, that while only having the support of a slim segment of the population still manages to capture some political power. That is the price that we must unfortunate pay.

Soltesz: So Margherians have enough of a voice to chose representatives but not so much as to force Timiocato to hear their cries.

Camoranesi: You have taken what I've said completely out of context.

Soltesz: In this case, Señor, the actions of the FPD speak much more loudly that what you have said here today.

Camoranesi: That is a complete...

Soltesz: Thank you for your time. I am Jorge Soltesz and I was just talking with MPD leader Marco Antutto Camoranesi. This is part four of our fifteen party series on Oltremare in international politics. I thank Señor Camoranesi and the Margherian Progressive Democrats for their cooperation.

After the break we'll bring you a live in-studio interview with Patriopolis Mayor, Hector Lee. He will talk to us about the raising crime rates in southern Oltremare and what exactly the Federal Government is doing about it.

Devante eliminated after ballot two; Sorantanali just shy of win

MANDRAGORA (PNN) -- Constantino Sorantanali came within 3,2% of securing the FPD leadership in the second ballot, but the real news appears to be the elimination of Potenza mayor Castel Devante, who finished last of the three remaining candidates.

Second ballot results show Sorantanali receiving 56,8% of the votes, with Mariana Cosima Vincenza a distant second at just under 25%. Devante received 18,3% and was thusly eliminated on the Plan B rule.

Many observers expected Devante to make it through to the end and give Sorantanali a run for his money, but it appears the person to do that will be Ciocanto premerati Mariana Cosima Vincenza. Both Devante and Vincenza are from a northern province and there is speculation Devante will ask his supporters to throw their support behind Vincenza. Vincenza supporters were reportedly going to do the same for Devante had Vincenza been eliminated in a three-way race.

Still, in a now two-way race, Sorantanali is expected to take the win in the third ballot with a solid 60+ majority.

Constantino Sorantanali has been elected
leader of the Federation of Progressive
Democrats after a third-ballot victory.
He captured exactly 68% of the vote.

Sorantanali elected leader by wide margin

After a shocking first ballot where half the candidates were eliminated, followed by an equally surprising second ballot in which Castel Devante was brought to his knees, Constantino Sorantanali defeated Mariana Cosima Vincenza 68% - 32% in what was quickly called the "Battle of the Premeratimu" among the FPD. After only 60% of the ballots had been counted (electronically), it was clear Sorantanali, the Sambuca premerati, had defeated Vincenza, but the margin did not become as wide as it did until the last vote was announced.

Sorantanali, 47, took a clear mandate with 11,3 of 16,6 million total votes. Devante's supporters split 56-44 in favour of Sorantanali after the Potenza mayor was eliminated in the second round.

Mr Sorantanali's supporters are claiming the new party leader's fiery, patriotic and passionate speech before the third vote was the kingmaker in securing his ascension after three ballots. Sorantanali talked of a Pacitalia where all voices were equally important, where north and south, east and west cooperated under the banner of a democratic republic, both socially and economically strong. This appeared to take the initiative away from Ms Vincenza, who wanted to focus on improving the north's stake in federal affairs.

Sorantanali spoke to reporters after emerging from the convention.

"I am quite honoured to be elected by so many of the FPD delegates," Sorantanali said. "I believe it is a mark of how the FPD is a party of coexistence and cooperation that we were able to quickly elect a new leader and move on with the process of electing a new government in a month's time. It was an excellent competition."

Retiring prime minister Timothy Ell offered his congratulations to Sorantanali by phone from Hamptonshire, and expressed his confidence that Sorantanali's leadership of the FPD would ensure the strength of the party would continue.

Sorantanali will be sworn in as leader on 4th January, 2006.

I can't believe the international community is actually listening to a hybrid fascist/anti-Semitic, genocidic fraud like Chia Neng Lee, whose only intention is to create instability in countries he obviously envies. The day Chia Neng Lee's words actually carry far into the international community will be never. Mr Lee is a hypocrite, a slanderous hack and a threat to world intelligence. To insult the processes of freedom when he himself has never tasted true life is laughable. The Pacitalian people take offence to your insult against our democracy - you, sir, and your lapdog "Pope", must be living in a fantasy world, since you cannot see blatant practice of freedom of conscience and political belief and the obvious promotion of civil rights, even if it's right in front of your eyes.

Hopefully Kaiser J.L., a man we highly respect and admire, comes to his senses, senses we definitely know he possesses, and asks for Mr Lee's resignation. Roach-Busters is an honourable nation but Mr Lee is tainting the reputation of such honour in a strong manner. We urge the Kaiser to reconsider the employment of this hack, whose slanderous comments only harm the attempts of our two nations to reconcile and forgive each other's trespasses.

The following is a transcript of the victory speech of Constantino Sorantanali after he captured the FPD leadership with a wide majority of the third-ballot vote.

-applause-

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, members of the Federation, thank you so much, thank you very much...

I am humbled, honoured and truly appreciative of the opportunity to represent this party in the next election and return the FPD to power once again!

-applause-

Ladies and gentlemen... for the past eighteen years the Federation has governed Pacitalia with integrity, passion, patriotism, care and fiscal responsibility. We have done our job, we have maxed out Pacitalia's potential and we are proud of it.

-applause-

But many of you will be asking what a Sorantanali administration will do differently from my two predecessors. And it is a very good question - what will we do? Well, let me tell you, folks. We are going to not only build upon the legacies of Francesco Santo Ragazzo and Timothy Ell - we will build our own definitive legacy, and Pacitalia will lead the world once more!

-applause-

Under a Sorantanali administration, we will be our own nation! We will express our opinions when we want to, how we want to, and we will not allow international influence to dictate how we present ourselves in the international community! For too long we have allowed other powers to guide us down a road we should regret we took, and that is unacceptable!

-applause-

We fell for it, yes, but we turned around; we saw the light! We are our own men and women, and we will not stand for dictation anymore! Ladies and gentlemen, there is clearly something wrong with the world when a diplomatic superpower takes direction from others who do not have the same reputation. You have my word that a Sorantanali administration will increase the priority of Pacitalian diplomacy to improve the value of our words. We will not drive people away, but we will demand respect where it is due!

-applause-

The last two administrations have been concerned with Pacitalia's exterior image, and they have done an excellent job of it. Now that we have accomplished that admirably, I want to focus back on our interior image - on the families and the social groups, the two pillars of our inner society. Life will become much easier for families-- you have my word. Internal economic growth will usher in a new era of prosperity for every single Pacitalian, young and old, male or female. We will rid ourselves of the stain of poverty!

-applause-

We will improve the daycare system, we will strategise on ways to better our education and health care systems, we will make it easier for families to pay their taxes! We will develop numerous procedures so that it is easier than ever before for parents to see their child through to their full potential, from birth, to preschool, to regular schooling, university and a career!

-applause-

The mark of a good society is that it is progressive - and we will maintain that to the last! We will make sure that everyone in Pacitalia has a voice! Stand up for yourself, make yourself heard! You have that ability more than ever before! Now is the time to uphold our democratic values, ladies and gentlemen! A Sorantanali administration will watch over democracy and uphold it for you! Democracy needs the Pacitalian bulwark more than ever, and WE WILL NOT DROP THE BALL!

-applause and chanting-

A Sorantanali administration will defend your rights and freedoms, your individual liberties, through the "Carta". We understand and respect how important freedom and justice are to every Pacitalian, and we will protect you against those who seek to oppose it!

-applause-

It is your right to earn money! It is your right to an education to get a job! But you have to want it! We are known around the world for our industrious nature, why stop now? We have a chance, an opportunity... to improve our own society, to become more prosperous, and stronger, both as individuals and as a nation. But you have to want it! We all have to work hard, to put in the time and the effort! And we will get there, but you have to want it! So, I ask you? Do you want it?!

-cheering-

Do you want it?!

-louder cheering-

That's the Pacitalia I know, folks. One that works hard to get what we want. We don't stop until the effort pays off, and I know the next few years will be no different! And the government will aid the private sector, not dictate to it, because the best type of economic intervention is no intervention! We will still protect workers' rights. We will still ensure prosperity and economic growth. But we will not tell the private sector what to do! A strong economy needs to be able to govern itself!

-strong applause-

For the past few months there has been calls for the unification of Hamptonian and Pacitalian monetary interests. But I fear the sovereignty of Pacitalia will be jeopardised by such a move. I have nothing but respect for our brothers in the Grand Duchy, but right now I feel strongly that our interests would not be best served by a unified currency. Perhaps it will be a different scenario a few years from now, even just a few months, but Pacitalia needs to continue to assert itself in the international community, and we need to continue to improve our internal living standards, before we can look towards matters such as that.

-applause-

Under my leadership, Pacitalia will be the best. Pacitalia will not be a follower. We will lead once again! Thank you very much for this opportunity!!

-standing ovation as Sorantanali waves-
