"So you believe that our defences are now strong enough?"
"I do," replied the Governor, "We have enough coastal forts along the river area to stop any force that is currently deployed to the continent - we have enough 25" and 30" guns arranged in quarts to give continual fire upon any enemy who attempts to move up the river, as well as lighter guns to deter amphibious attack and enough emplaced missile batteries to smash any escorts or aerial threats."
The Commissioner nodded. "And our landward defences? How well are they prepared?"
"All of the forts are on elevated and cleared ground. Any attack on them from the landward side would be laughable. Our defences along the landward borders are not so impressive, but they are coming along nicely. The nations to our East seem particularly docile in any case. I wouldnt expect any trouble."
"Excellent. Most excellent, Governor," replied the Commissioner, "I will have a detachment of Hussar Strike Fighters assigned to the colony for its defence, along with a Whirlwind Strike Group to break up any serious naval or landward attack."
"Thankyou, Governor. The investment into the defence of this colony has been more than I could reasonably have hoped for," replied the Government in perfect honesty.
"Indeed, yes. It is somewhat out of the ordinary. However, you have doubtless heard the rumblings in other parts of the colony - I shouldn't like to think what would happen if something like that were to happen along our[/i borders." He was referring, of course, to the Doomingslandi colony which was facing trenches and bunkers on all sides, and attacking a neighbour despite of it. "Not to mention the fact that I have every intention of seeing a return on Praeton's investment."
Now he referred to the costal forts and the vessels that patrolled the gaps between them. As the colony stradled both sides of the mouth of the river that led into the depths of the continent, the entire width of the river along the Praetonian section had been claimed as territorial waters of the Praetonian colony, although nothing had as yet been enforced.
"With every ship that passes through this vital artery of trade having to pay Praetonian taxes, the money should be made back over the course of a decade or two, and then we have some free coastal defences that extend along the entire sea-ward facing border of the colony," the Commissioner continued, "I expect that the central Government will make their announcement soon."

[i]In accordance with the findings of the Strategic Review of Imperial Interests & Possesions Abroad, 2005, toll rights for the strip of Praetonian territorial water between the two landmasses of the Praetonian claim have been sold to Royal Ports Ltd. and they hence have the complete sovereign right to toll any and all shipping that passes through the Praetonian sovereign maritime claim. This will be enforced by the 'Turnpike Forts' and Imperial Naval warships patroling the straits. The total area to be taxed and the rough positions of the forts is depicted below:

The Board of Directors of Royal Ports Ltd, and the Managing Director, King Sarius I, have requested that the FCO announce the following exemptions on the understanding that Praetonian shipping through their waters shall also not be taxed:
• Ruthless Slaughter
• Tinsulvilia
• New Warsaw
• CLG
• Stevid
His Majesty has stated in a Royal Ports Ltd. Press Statement that ships belonging to Doomingsland will be banned from the straits and those belonging to The Silver Sky taxed at a much higher than average rate until such time as the hostilities against Ocagia have ceased. His Majesty's Government shall not comment on this matter.
The toll will be worked out based upon a graded system determined first by the ship's type and cargo and then by its displacement, with prices per tonne dropping in the higher displacement bands and the lower importance of the cargo in strategic terms. However, Royal Ports Ltd. has stated that the average toll for a medium sized vessel carrying a moderately important cargo that is in relatively good condition will be in the region of $0.2 per metric tonne.
