Carlos Gardel dies in plane crash
Argentina’s beloved tango singer Carlos Gardel has died in a plane accident. A funeral march was held to let the people pay their respects.

Navy to sell carriers: a grave mistake?
In a press release Thursday, the navy informed journalists that Argentina would sell both of its Soryu-class aircraft carriers to foreign powers. Some call this move a mistake. “In troubled times such as these, we need more navel power, not less,” said Diego Calameras, a retired sergeant.

President Alvarez calls for national unity
Facing severe criticism from the Socialist Party, President Manuel Alvarez has asked for a ceasefire in political attacks. Socialist leaders declined and added a few words about the president’s cowardice and fear of open debate.

President Alvarez agrees, with the stipulation that if one of the signatories provokes another country or declares unprovoked war on another country, the mutual defense treaty is void.

Great Britain, Argentina Sign Loan Deal
In a speech yeasterday, President Alvarez has announced that Argentina has been given a large loan by Great Britain. Further questions were taken by Minister of the Treasury Diego de la Cruz. All parties appear to be satisfied, but some call the 33% interest rate too much. Whether or not this deal will support Alvarez's flagging approval ratings remains to be seen.

Brazil wishes to know whether the new Argentinian administration has any antipathy toward the socialist government of Brazil. Previously relations have been warm between our countries and we would not wish to see this good feeling reneged upon.

Snr. Carvalho

Argentina has no ill feelings towards Brazil whatsoever. However, Buenos Aires does wonder about the legalities of Brazil getting military assistance from the Union, considering that the Union is bound by treaty not to interfere in South American affairs.

(If I'm wrong about the treaty, then just delete the last sentence.)

The deal is all legitimate and above board, we purchased the carrier technically from Manchuria, which is not covered by the treaty.

Brazil is equally worried about the susceptability of Argentina to the influence of the United States. We hold no ill will currently towards our Northern neighbour but they do have a past history of direct military intervention in South American affairs, something which the previous administration of your country was staunchly against.

My predecessor was not mistaken in his stance against foreign intervention in South America. However, it would be taken as a sign of good faith if Brazil used Union funds for humanitarian purposes only, and refused any further military buildup based on Union funds. Surely Rio de Janeiro can recognize that sponsoring large military forces is little different from direct intervention.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you that Argentina is the only large South American state that does not have a foreign sponsor.

Regards,
Manuel Alvarez, President

We accept this and from now on Union aid will go mainly into implementing healthcare in urban areas of high privation. This gesture is one of friendship to you our neighbours and we hope at some point to better realise our camraderie with Argentina. For now we propose a non-aggression pact. We stop short of a full blown military alliance for not wishing to be drawn into war by treaty obligation.

We fully back you on foreign intervention and we are the first voice to be heard in keeping other nations out of South America.

Regards,
Snr. Carvalho
Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

We appreciate your resolve, and thank you for curtailing Union aid to non-military persuits.

Argentina happily accepts the offer of a non-aggression pact.

Emperor Hirohito’s convoy exited the transports that had carried them to Argentina and headed to the square where Emperor Hirohito was scheduled to make a speech to the public.

“Hola Mi Amigos,” began Emperor Hirohito in coached Spanish, then switching to a more mutually understood English. “Today I have come here to show my resolve to show how grateful of Argentina’s friendship. Argentina has always stood by my nation even when Japan has not always been worthy of such loyalty.

I am proud to be a friend of this great nation, and I hope this friendship to continue into the future. Both our nations are heading towards greatness, this I am sure. I wish to continue this march together, hand-in-hand as we have in the past. Perhaps no nation has been as loyal to the Japanese people, through thick and thin as you. For that you have my eternal thanks of me and my people. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Ironically, of course, it would be "Hola mis amigos," because of the plural. But the Japanese are famously poor at other languages, so I find this quite plausible.

Hehehe, you would think I would know that since I'm taking Spanish classes right now. This may explain my bad grades though.......

Election Results for 1938

A recent political reshuffling has resulted in the following major parties:

Socialist Party- Pro-brazil and pro-socialism, the socialists have lost ground in the past years. With better social services, they've lost much of their focus, but still remain strong among the poor. Won 22% of the vote.

Nationalist Party- Strongly isolationist, gained ground with those angry to see Argentina giving so much aid to Bolivia. Won 31% of the vote.

Argentine Strength- The dominant party. Gained some ground due to increased social spending and refusal to fight the Union and France. Won 47% of the vote, narrowly missing a majority.

Other- various other candidates won 8% of the vote.

1939 news

New Currency Announced
In a joint statement with the governments of Peru and Chile, the government announced the South American Dollar. A common currency to be adopted throughout Peru, Chile, and Argentina, the SAD will replace old currencies in 1940. A panel of economists based in Santiago will decide the South American Dollar’s monetary policies. Argentina and Chile will each appoint 6 representatives, and Peru will appoint 4 representatives. These representatives will serve one 12-year term and cannot be re-appointed.

However, some economists oppose the new currency. Opponents say that a lack of independent monetary policy will hamper the growth of the economy. Minister of the Treasury Diego de la Cruz responded with claims that the new currency would provide stability.

Argentine Proposal for the Federation of South American Nations (Federación de Naciónes Suramericanos, or FNS).

Argentina is forming the FNS, a group of South American nations that wish for closer bonds. Membership in the FNS will merge existing nations together in order to create a stronger whole. The FNS constitution proposes a single congress of 300 representatives. 120 representatives would be split evenly between the member states. The other 180 would be given out according to population. Additionally, a President would be elected in an FNS-wide election, with any candidate on the ballot who can gather at least 30 representatives to support him.

The constitution is also very heavy on human rights, member states rights (for instance, member states have the power to tax, to pass laws, and so forth).

Before this is formally announced, Chile, Bolivia, and Peru are quietly informed.
OOC: Do they request any changes?

Chile and Peru will join, I assume Bolivia will as well (based on players wishes)
I am going to assume this happens in 1943, so they join together in 44, and effective 45 they are one state. Which I will factor in while doing economics

Between 1964-69, nearly 10 million people will apply to immigrate to FNS nations.

500,000 from Spain, 2 million from the US (these are the Spanish speakers) plus 4 million Europeans, 500,000 Turks, 1 million from the USEA and the rest are Chinese.

you will get 1 production center free for every 2 million immigrants you take in
