After weeks of preparation, last-minute deals between factions and mindless squabbling, everything had come down to this: the creation of the United Republics of Eastern Siberia, replacing the Despotate of Eppessenia.
Six months had passed since the autumn invasion of Squornshelous, supposedly because soldiers and agents of Squornshelous attacked various installations causing huge losses of life. Sqournshelous claimed innocence, while the government tried to contain the incidents until the attack on the town of Dallantyne forced the government to invade Squornshelous. The rushed nature of the invasion combined with the poor organisation of Andrehervian forces meant that the war descended into a stalemate within a few days and a ceasefire was announced. Just after this was signed, it was leaked to the media that in fact Captain Logan Hague and several ministry of defence employees were behind the attack to increase their territorial amount and to gain access to mineral resources in the north and central of Siberia. A few weeks after and when Andrehervian forces were withdrawing from Squornshelous, it emerged that Terrence McMullen, the minister of defence, planned and ordered the attacks. This led to a huge burst of outrage from the population, causing nationwide riots and eventually forcing Donald Witzenberg to sack the entire government and resigning, his last Executive Order being for the arrest of McMullen. A provisional government was formed, headed by former Premier Jim Southern who was asked to oversee the process, running the country, reorganising the army and constructing the framework for a new democratically elected government as well as forming a new administrative structure. Out of this came the new United Republics of Eastern Siberia. New administrative buildings are being built at Spence-Moorland, the new capital to accommodate the new country.
In the elections, one month previously, the Progressive Party won most of the 406 seats, with 211 Members of Parliament in the Central Parliament, followed by the Centre Right Collective with 81 seats. The country’s new Chief Executive is Victor Irvine and the Deputy Chief Executive is Geoffrey Court. The first full meeting of the Central Parliament will take place in a week’s time. Elections for Region Representatives for Republic Parliaments are schedules to take place in a month. A new constitution and foreign policy is due to be released soon.
