What would be an appropriate fleet size? (OOC; FT)

I was wondering what an appropriate amount of warships would be for my nation. My population is about 8 million and I want to enter some military RPs and was wondering how big my fleet would be. The fleet uses large warships similar in size to Galaxy-class starships from Star Trek. The only other vessels used would be Feliners which are the size of well small intergalactic ships.

Personally, my military is a total of 650,000 military(logistics included) with 76,545 combat fleet personel crewing 1,093 warships of varying sizes.
My population is 1.976 billion.
Of course because of how my nation works out, I don't need a large navy or army, so these are just my two cents.

If the Galaxy-class were your largest vessel, you could feasibly have a few hundred ships total, what with their small size and tiny crew. As a rule of thumb, don't exceed 5% of your population for total military forces, and try to keep it closer to one or two percent. As for logistics, try to keep a ratio of between 6:1 and 10:1, I believe, most likely leaning towards the higher end.

Cool. Well does anyone have any suggestions about how big my navy should be? I just need to know how many warships I should have.

I'd say keep it small unless either:
A: You have a VERY good reason for having a large navy.
B: You have many small sized ships and few large ships.

Well yeah the Thunderian Warships are the largest and are the size of a Galaxy-class starship. I'm a Thundercats nation that controls about 72% of the Thunderian Galaxy and I am set about 10 years after the revival of Thundera when all the Thunderians returned. They constantly fall under the attacks of Mutants and the forces of Evil set forth by the Ancient Spirits of Evil ya know those guys Mumm-Ra followed.

Actually I have no idea what you're talking about. I've never heard of Thundercats, Mumm-Ra, or anything else you mentioned(Save the Galaxy-Class Starship)

Oh well that's hard to believe you must be young or never watch Toonami on Cartoon Network. It used to be on all the time. But nehow I just need a rough amount I should start with does a hundred-fifty ships sound right?

Not a fan of Toonami, no good anime on it, especially with it being in English. And I'm 19, so age is probably the problem, too.

As for number of ships, 150 ships sounds just fine. Shouldn't be any problems at all, especially with the relatively small scale of your ships.

150 galaxy class sized ships, you need a VERY GOOD reason to have a fleet that size especially considering age/size of your nation.
If you mean 150 ships of general mix(few heavies, mostly lights) that would be good.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to offend you or anything, but Thundercats was a really, really bad show. About on par with DBZ.

They may be small but they are heavily armed.

A good reason would that they are constantly under attack by outside forces by canon kind of like Warhammer 40K just not to that extreme extent.

When I say heavy, I'm refering more to size than weapons amounts, as big ships = expensive/crew intensive ect

So a completely militarised nation?
Thunderra

Kind of. They have to sustain a fairly large military for the defense of their nation from outside threats. As for the Galaxy-class it can be run by about 500 people probably less. The normal amount includes children and families and stuff like that.

But you also have to consider things like logistics.
I know this is for MT, but principles are the same.

I understand that but I'm saying they aren't the same thing and was thinking that would be an appropriate fleet size. If you have a suggestion for fleet size would you please state it.
Theao

I'd say maybe a tenth the number of big ships, with the rest made up of light/medium sized ships.
Thunderra
18-12-2005, 08:07
Well I only have the Heavy Thunderian warships and the Light Feliners. The only other type of battle vessel I have for space are the Thunderstrikes which are like Heavy Fighters.

Ah, then that might be better. I'd say wait for some other people as well thought.
Thunderra

so does like 30-40 Heavy Thunderian Vessels and 110-120 Fleiners sound good?
Theao
18-12-2005, 08:19
Ya, but like I said, you should probably wait for someone else to weigh in as well.

Like me (and my sister's (Planet Zi) as well). In SeaQuest, everything, except Atlantis, my Capital City Ship, is controlled by the Imperial Star Navy.

The last link gave me a "Don't Hotlink" message. Try hosting it in a Photobucket account.

As for the first one, from the image it looks more like a shuttlecraft than anything else (with a fighter style cockpit).

Is that the Galaxy class sized one? If so, is it the size of a Mark I, Mark II, or Mark III Galaxy class (I got info on all three)?

When considering your logistics you how to know where and in what conditions your fleet will be operating in. My own fleets usually stay between 100-300 ships per fleet, but are able to split into smaller task forces for recon and exploration. So, if you plan on bringing everything to bear all at once in battle (not everyone enjoys people doing so) then just keep it all in one fleet. If you planning mutliple rps then split it into two.

Mark I

Mark I Galaxy Class:
Dimensions:
Length: 641 meters
Beam: 470 meters
Height: 145 meters
Mass: 4,960,000 tons
Decks: 42

So, this is around the size of that ship?
