Open Announcement to the Nations of the World

The Imperial Union would like to announce the development of an update for our nation's primary arm, the venerable Short Muzzle Lee Enfield Number 1 Mark 4. In order to compete in the world of Assault rifles whilst maintaining a cheap source of armament, the Defence Developments Agency (DDA) has begun modification of all SMLE Mark 4s to the newly designated Imperial Lee Enfield Automatic (ILEA) Mark 1.

The redesign comprises a simple yet effective method of replacing the bolt-action system of reloading the weapon with a basic gas-operated action attached to a long-stroke gas piston, similar to the action used in the AK-47 Assault Rifle. This gives the weapon a modest firing rate of 300 rounds a minute. The magazine has been increased to a maximum of 20 rounds from the original 10 as a Bolt Action to increase the fire capacity of Imperial Union soldiers. The complete modification process is expected to take 3 NS Years (3 RL Weeks) to replace all SMLE Mark 4s into the new ILEA Mark 1 configuration.

OOC: Judging by the much smaller magazine i take it you aren't using .303 ammo anymore?

OOC: Sorry, I should have mentioned converting it to 7.62 Nato, as it seems pretty much everyone uses it.

Not to be picky but a 7.62mm NATO magazine wouldn't be that much smaller than a .303 magazine the roudns aren't really that much different in size.

Now if you wanted soemthign a bit different and rproperly british in origin then .280/7x43mm British would be a good alternative round if you aren't worried about international commonality (which isn't the huge issue in NS that it would be in RL).

Other wise very good and toodle pip.

OOC: Actually, I think I may go with your idea, keeping with the British theme of my nation. Thanks. :)

i'm sure i've seen that weapon in RL in one of my books........

but I thought it was just a semi automatic version......

at best.

Why don't you just get new weapons?

OOC: That precise picture is the Jungle Carbine version of the SMLE, but I just liked that particular picture so I edited out the bolt-action handle (badly). Also, I wanted to make my own weapons instead of getting new ones because A) updating my existing rifles seems cheaper on my small military budget and B) It sticks with the theme of my British-based nation.
