General Description:
In recent years, as number of threats to the Sovereignty increased, Eshirian forces have found it increasingly costly, and ineffective to continually rely on the traditional fighter clouds to accomplish a mission. Despite claims that Eshirian Technology, and quality of construction was still sufficient to defend the Sovereignty, the reality was that even the highest quality vessels were simply being overwhelmed. Thus the High Command issued a contract for a new, cheaper class of ship that was to be built in bulk, and finally replace the fighter as the premier anti-ship weapon in the Eshirian Arsenal.
Following the completion of the Preamisus Battlecarrier program, and field experience with the Shade Class Cruisers, Defense analysts in the Sovereign High Command quickly realized the growing importance of ships that are capable of taking the fight right up to the enemy's face all on it's own without the traditional fighter support.
Out of 5 proposals, the Arc Class was selected due to simplicity of design, superior hull strength, impressive upgrade capability, and overall versatility. In combat deployments, the Arc Class has proven to be better than predicted, able to defeat even upgraded versions of the most popular warship in the Milky Way Galaxy, the Star Destroyer, in scenarios of two to one with minimal damage. This was thanks in no small part to the Siege Cannon slung below its hull, and efficient coordinated strikes with shield sapping "Sprite" Missiles, "Thumper" torpedoes, coupled the the superior firepower of its "Lasher" Cannon main armament.
At the moment, 1,000+ Arc MDs are in service, with orders for at least 300 more.
