The morning was silent and calm in Krendakov’s capital, Ekaterina. The scene gave no hint of what was to come; it seemed it would be a normal day in Krendakov. The streets lay quiet, and a few cars containing mainly government officials made their way to the governmental offices. Seventy kilometres away, tanks and A.P.C.s started up their engines, preparing to leave the military base they were in. They drove out to the motorway that ran to Ekaterina and started their long drive to the city.
People in the suburbs of Ekaterina were awakened by the rumbling of tanks moving into the city an hour later. Rather than the usual flag with a yellow star, these units flew a flag with a red hammer and sickle on it. Many people watched out their windows or stood in their front door. The tanks continued into Ekaterina, on the look out for forces opposing them; there were none. They drew nearer to the centre of the city, towards their target – the government offices.
A debate raged in the governmental offices. Presidant Ognevlevna† was in a fierce argument with the leader of the Krendian Reactionary Party. At that moment an explosion ripped through the wall. The tanks had reached their target. Several soldiers entered the room and evacuated the shocked officials to the roof where several transport helicopters waited to help them flee. On the roof, several soldiers armed with anti-tank weaponry were at the edge, firing at the tanks that were trying to destroy the government building. One of them fired off a missile; it flew straight at its target and exploded on impact. The tank was ripped apart.
The officials now understood their situation better, after having gotten over their initial shock. They quickly made their way to the helicopter they were assigned to. The government had already set up plans for an attack of this nature, but this attack had surprised them: they had thought that all military units in two-hundred kilometres were loyal to them. The last person to get aboard the helicopters was the president herself. As the helicopters took off she looked out the back at the receding building that was the centre of free Krendakov. “And thus ends freedom…” she sighed to herself.
