on one day in the Holy Roman Empire

I have ruled for along time this empire Strenghing it where i must but i must admit i have never Expanded it so here i sit on my Throne awaiting the messenger i sent for then i hear footsteps and i lookup.

"you requested my presence Emperor" he said

"yes i want you and four other to deliver these messages to these four Kingdoms England,France,poland and also the Byzantine Empire"

"sir would the pope agree with giving a hand of Friendship to the Heretics of the east" he replyed

"Trust me i can handle the pope just gets those messengers to there locations"

so it begins here between a messenger and his Emperor i thing is i doubt england of france would be interested they have to many Internal matters to be able to offer any real help. The thing with Poland is we havent been on good terms for a while so i think it's time i change that im going to need allies in the East and the Byzantines with there wealth i would be stupid to not try to ally myself with them hopfully tommorow brings a new age for the people of my Empire. Background:The Heiliges Römisches Reich Deutscher Nation was a political conglomeration of lands in Central Europe in the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Then Emperor looked he was infact interested

"then so be it you will be given 1000 Men-at-Arms and 150 knights we would offer more but we are a little tied at the moment".

The Emperor has released a new law declaring a Standing Army.

"Why do we need a standing army the knights have been our protectors for the last 200 years" said one of the many Princes

The emperor replyed "because we cant rely on knights forever the Heiliges Römisches Reich still goes to war with only armed peasants and knights we must update our army or we will be unable to defend ourselves"

not getting a reply the Emperor continued "Every city and town shall in the Reich shall have a Recruitment stand where peasants can be Recruited to the Army but i will tell you they will be paid only a small amount but we will pay them more then there usally jobs"

"how will you fund this every peasant in the Reich will want to join" said yet another Prince

"yes i understand you there we must think of a limit we must look at our borders and see how many Soldiers we need on them to protect them this will be Expensive i will not doubt that but the people of the Reich will be Protected and you lands will not be harmed i am trying to increase trade with others lands as we speak and i am sure they will have no reason to disagree"

Then the Imperial Princes and the Emperor left th chambers this reformation as the Emperor knew could make or break the Heiliges Römisches Reich if this didnt work not only would the reich lose troops but also would destroy the Reich's Finacialy i suppose the next couple of months will tell.

(dont worry im not trying to romanise the army)

I have been trying to find some clue to the reich's army size but sine i cant this will have to do.

Keep in mind that the empire is quite willing to use Prussian Mercenaries which can increase the army size by 500.

The border is at 96% of the max's soldiers needed to keep them secure

(Lower amounts might be because of soldiers being overseas and yes i am willing to take that into account)

The Pope had already heard of the messages sent out. The ears of the Pope went far behind the limits of Rome, beyond even the eyes of men (Russia). The Pope knew, threw faithful Catholics within the Holy Roman Empire, of what the good Emperor Henry IV was up to. Urban II had no problems with the Russians, in fact they were seen as potential allies. He knew now was his oppurtunity to strike, and strike hard. To weaken the Holy Roman Empire, even a little, was to strengthen his own position. This day, the Pope would rule.

Urban II immiedately sent out messengers to the Clan of Prince Yaropolk with all due haste. Written in this message was the following:

Greetings Great Prince of Russia,

I, Pope Urban II, know of your plight. Your desire to reunify and thus forge a powerful empire that will unite all Russians--everywhere. As such, I know of your dealings with Emperor Henry IV, and I have a proposal. I ask that you not ask for his assistance. While he is a great and noble king, his time would be more wisely spent fighting the Heretics in Prussia and Norway.

As such, I offer you something different. Cast off your Pagan beliefs, where are your false gods now when your people are so disunified and spread across the vast plains of the East? Convert to the true and wise belief of Christianity and know the wisdom God gives. If you convert and cast off your pagan beliefs, I will deliver unto you a unified Russia, a powerful Russia. A Catholic Russian Empire.

Should you accept this proposal know that you will soon have the Catholic Armies marching across your lands and unifiying them.

The people of Kiev are Orthodox Christians.

The people of Prussia isint that the where th Teutonic order is suppose to work remeber they are classed as a diffrent faction even though they are meant to be part of the Reich.

The people of norway are already christian all you the pope have to worry about is the Viking rebellions which i will assure you i will destroy norway is in no shape to go againts the Reich i am sure i can handle them.

i also warn the pope that the Byzantine Empire will not take this attempt to convert a Orthodox nation likely but then i do not control the Byzantine Empire but i as the Emperor of the Heiliges Römisches Reich i thought you
should know i am trying to make alliances with Byzantine's.I also do take responibility for the Protection of the Kiev people since we are now of a military agreement.

I would like to remind the good and noble King Henry IV to understand whom he is speaking to, I am not some noble in your kingdom, nor am I some peasant you can insult. Your people and you respect me and with good reason. As for the people of Russia, yes they are 'Christian', but not Catholic. As such I see it my duty to God and Roman Catholics to ensure that all are given the chance to convert.

As for the Byzantine Empire, last I checked the Moslems were raiding Constantinople, they are in no position to so eagerly be discarding potential allies, that being the Papal States and thus all Catholics.

As for your promises of putting down this Heretic Viking belief, I will take your word for it. Though do realize, that I will pay serious attention to your actions and campaign. Should you fail, the consquences will be severe. I will not be so forgiving if you throw away hundreds, prehaps thousands, of noble Christian lives and in the end fail to prevent this heresy from spreading. Look down at the throne you sit on, and hold tightly to it, for if you fail you may find yourself sitting on a less 'noble' chair.

Henry IV has called a meeting to discide the future of the Reich the days that he had to bow down to princes was over.

"Pleage your loyalty to me and give me control over your lands full control no longer will a be a small player in the Reich i will not be a puppet somebody to push the blame too SURRENDER YOUR POWERS TO ME OR DIE"

I told my General "this is the starting of a new day of the reich i know rebellion will start but trust me they wont survive with the Military reformations i had a excuse to put a good sized army in every town and city in the Reich tell these armies if they catch one person planing to go againts the Emperor they are the kill on sight the Emperor word is law"

Today the war of Unification will start and by tommorow it will end.

[OOC: Most of the time, I would be all for this. But no offense, you didn't take into consideration the fact that you'd now have half your Empire in civil war, and not one that will end in one day. Yes, you kill the Princes, so what? Their sons and generals take over and lead a war against you. OOC: Who is going to fight for the Emporer? The Princes held all the power... the Holy Roman Empire was a confederacy, nobody listed to one another. It was more like a bunch of independent nations than an Empire... unifying them would take decades, not months...

2)good stable Leadership
3)Lots of money

I travel with a good army my military reforms mean that i ave a large army of 6000 behind me this Rebellion will end infact there bringing the end to themselves the rebels in some places are fighting eachother trying to unite the rebel states.

the formation was simple infantry on the frount calvary on the sides and the archers behind the infantry

"this will most likely be a defensive engagement the rebels will come to us if not make them"

i see the lines in position my army was still mostly armed peasants but they were better trained and equiped then before.

i say to my general "i thought the princes would have guessed what i was planing when i got started the military reforms all it was for is to make a army loyal to the reich and the fact they have to pleage there loyalty to the Emperor meant that they were my troops"

The rebels seemed to waiting on the hill on the other side

"how many calvary in reserve general"

"make them charge then return then charge again get those rebels angry beyond reason and force them on the offence"

i heard him go off to tell tell the reserves what to do

"get me a messenger" i told a soldier.

As i saw the calvary charge for the first time i told the messenger

"when the have charged 3 times go to them and demand there surrender tell them if they accept there lives will be spared and they will be accepted into the army of the Reich if not tell them that they better get ready to hve there throat slit"

the charges went great the rebels where starting to get restless the messenger went off he returned and said "only if to reinstate the power of the princes" i then told the messenger to go back and he did the rebels now started to charge.

"released the arrows" i say boredly to a Captain

only about 1200 made it to fight then i ordered the calvary to charge the flanks and the archers to stop firing i lost only 123 men and destroyed the rebels

So we travelled north several Rebel factions have surrendered

"Sir the king william of england has sent reinforcements on the norths coast"

i look at the messenger for a while

"nice to know he cares get them in the army i suspect the rebels will launch one last attack before they fall under my control"

we waited at a nearby fort for the reinforcements when they arrived a was suprised.

"Longbowmen and knights remind me to send gifts to the king of england as he has sent me his finist soldiers in all his land"

with the reinforcements my army was now up to maxium strengh again but half way during the night before we set off the fort was sieges by 3400 troops

"that is only half our army size sir the rebels could be crushed"

"i know trust me my dear general i know the thing is i dont want to lose more troops then i should i have wars to fight overseas"

i simply place the longbowmen and my own german archers to the walls the affect was quickly discovered

"the longbowmen are doing great and so are ours the range of the longbow is amazing these rebels will soon be destroyed"

and so it was in a days time i released my soldiers threw the gates to fight a army of only 1200 with 5700 troops on my side the rebellion surrendered and 600 soldiers joined my army.

"The rebellion is crushed seperate this army into six two go to the north two go to the south two god to the west and two to the east we must reinforce the Frountiers. Also the king of norway is not listening to my letter what he dosnt see is i am trying to help him destroy this rebellion that threat i just hoped would speed up the result"

"what do you want me to do" replied the general

"i need to contact Urban and see what he thinks i should do im not i helping them unless i get more backup"

"yes Emperor" he got on his horse and started to ride south

Edit:Seriously all i did was start a civil war and tell the guy controlling norway to stop his rebellion or i would have to invade.
