My question is this: how do most new FT nations know that there are FTL capable civilizations out there to make contact with?
I almost always see a intro thread that says they broadcasted some message that says that they want to talk with other space faring races, but in the context that they actually know that they are there. In real life, we think its possible that there are other sentient races out there, but we are not that certain.
I say most new FT nations because some don't send a message out into space but either reverse engineer a crashed interstellar ship, or test a FTL drive and then vessels from other races begin descending upon them like locusts.
((For the record, my planet-nation was in that second accidental scenerio.))
