OOC: The Updated Schultarian Armory Guide (Version 2)

Schultaria Prime
05-12-2005, 06:38
In an effort to catalogue my growing assortment of self-produced weapons / defensive items and open them up for public perusal, I've made this thread to serve such purposes. If additional explanation regarding some particular item is needed, I will do my utmost to provide the appropriate technical information. Note however that these weapons are designed for RP purposes and as such contain a base minimum of information; if you want detailed accuracy, it will take time for me to do the appropriate research (my class load at the present time does not permit me to do much "extraneous" investigation at the present moment).

Armor - Three Primary Layers:
Primary Layer - Blended Titanium - Aluminum Plating / Grounded Nickel Iron Plate: A Schultarian staple, and alternative to generic steel armor, this alloy plating has been perfected with well over fifty years of practical research and refinement in the alloying process. In successful application around the entirety of the tank, the alloy allows for lighter weight and increased speed while still retaining a very significant protective barrier. Though costly, it offers the same protective power, per unit size, as steel with 35% less mass to the tank. And the Nickel Iron Plate, while offering a limited amount of protection on its own, serves as a ground for the Scawalvo’s electrical reactive armor.

Secondary Layer - Electrically Charged Copper Sheathing: In conjunction with the Scawalvo’s primary layer of armor, this charged armor helps to diffuse (and sometimes completely placate) high energy sabot rounds through the process of electrical discharge. When a tank’s commander feels they and their crew are in danger, this layer is activated before engaging with incoming fire; should a shape charge or sabot-based round penetrate the first four layers of the tank’s armor reach this point, the electrical charge of the sheathing will come into contact with the Nickel Iron ground and help to diffuse the energy of the round before penetrating more critical elements of the armor layering. In effect, most infantry-based rocket propelled grenades and light anti-tank weapons are rendered to mere fractions of their full effect in combat situations.

Tertiary Layer - Blended Titanium - Aluminum Plating / Padded Fiberglass: Designed to collect any remaining fragments that might have passed through the other two layers and could potentially affect the crew or the internal components of the Scawalvo.
Approximate RHA Armor Values (Note: Length of Electric Reactive Armor Protection Time [Full Charge with Capacitor Support] ~ 1:30):
Front: 240 mm (Chemical) / 350 mm (KE) / 430 mm (HEAT)
Turret: 290 mm (Chemical) / 420 mm (KE) / 516 mm (HEAT)
Side / Rear: 70 mm (Chemical) / 101 mm (KE) / 125 mm (HEAT)
Weight: 17.75 Metric Tons fully loaded and operable

Speed:
120 km/h (On ideal paved roads)
60 km/h (In most battlefield settings)
Engine: Dnervoc (DN - HvM508) Heavy Vehicle Engine (V6, 5 Speed Automatic Transmission [3 forward / 2 reverse], Liquid Cooled)

Fuel(s):
Schultarian Industrial Ethanol (170 to 190 proof)
Conventional Biodiesel
Horsepower: 700 hp at 3,000 rpm

Range: 600 km at ideal operating speed

Ammunition Storage (1,000 rounds per weapon): Tracer / Conventional / High Explosive
(4) 80 mm Multi Purpose Grenade Launchers (Turret Side Mounts)
Ammunition Storage (12 Rounds): Fragmentation / Smoke / Tear Gas
Armor - Five Primary Layers:
Primary Layer - Blended Titanium - Aluminum Plating / Grounded Nickel Iron Plate: A Schultarian staple, and alternative to generic steel armor, this alloy plating has been perfected with well over fifty years of practical research and refinement in the alloying process. In successful application around the entirety of the tank, the alloy allows for lighter weight and increased speed while still retaining a very significant protective barrier. Though costly, it offers the same protective power, per unit size, as steel with 35% less mass to the tank. And the Nickel Iron Plate, while offering a limited amount of protection on its own, serves as a ground for the Lubrai’s quaternary layer of defensive armor plating.

Secondary Layer - Argon-Infused Tungsten / Carbon Fiber Honeycomb Framing: Designed as the first layer of high intensity protection in the Lubrai armor scheme, this armor series was developed to slow down high velocity kinetic energy rounds and diffuse caustic chemical warheads well before penetrating the more resilient levels of the Lubrai armor scheme. While the honeycomb framing helps to alleviate the impact of pent up kinetic energy in both sabot and chemical rounds, the Argon-infused cells help to provide fire protection and an inert barrier of protection from a myriad of chemical anti-armor projectiles such as fluorine based weapons.

Tertiary Layer - Electrically Charged Copper Sheathing: In conjunction with the Lubrai’s secondary layer of armor, this charged armor helps to diffuse (and sometimes completely placate) high energy sabot rounds through the process of electrical discharge.

Quaternary Layer – Non-Infused Ballistic Ceramics: A layer of composite ceramic, specially forged and cast from Schultarian plasma waste disposal units, offers significantly heightened protection from kinetic energy weapons immediately after the charged copper plating. The ceramic structure, composed mainly of individual bricks held together in a solid titanium / tungsten mesh, offers drastic reduction in armor deformation from even the most severe of direct hits.

Quinary Layer - Blended Titanium - Aluminum Plating / Padded Fiberglass: Designed to collect any remaining fragments that might have passed through the other three layers and could potentially affect the crew or the internal components of the Lubrai.
Approximate RHA Armor Values (Note: Length of Electric Reactive Armor Protection Time [Full Charge with Turbine Engine Support] ~ 6:45):
Front: 1900 mm (Chemical) / 1650 mm (KE) / 2030 mm (HEAT)
Turret: 2280 mm (Chemical) / 1980 mm (KE) / 2440 mm (HEAT)
Side: 1040 mm (Chemical) / 900 mm (KE) / 1107 mm (HEAT)
Rear: 400 mm (Chemical)/ 350 mm (KE) / 430 mm (HEAT)
Weight: 74.60 Metric Tons fully loaded and operable

Speed:
90 km/h (On ideal paved roads)
55 km/h (In most battlefield settings)

Armor - Nine Primary Layers:
Outer Layer - Explosive Reactive Armor: An array of specially engineered, Schultarian Deltex Ceramic, explosive shape charges are clustered around regions of the Masalan that are most vulnerable to HEAT class munitions. Specifically, these shape charges are customized to protect the areas of the Masalan most open to the sights of any enemy anti-armor crew, specifically the tank’s track skirting, forward armor plating, and turret sides are all fully encased in these reactive ceramic charges.

Secondary Layer - Blended Titanium - Aluminum Plating / Grounded Nickel Iron Plate: A Schultarian staple, and alternative to generic steel armor, this alloy plating has been perfected with well over fifty years of practical research and refinement in the alloying process. In successful application around the entirety of the tank, the alloy allows for lighter weight and increased speed while still retaining a very significant protective barrier. Though costly, it offers the same protective power, per unit size, as steel with 35% less mass to the tank. And the Nickel Iron Plate, while offering a limited amount of protection on its own, serves as a ground for the Masalan’s quaternary layer of defensive armor plating.

Tertiary Layer - Argon-Infused Tungsten / Carbon Fiber Honeycomb Framing: Designed as the first layer of high intensity protection in the Masalan armor scheme, this armor series was developed to slow down high velocity kinetic energy rounds and diffuse caustic chemical warheads well before penetrating the more resilient levels of the Ga’voima protective shells. While the honeycomb framing helps to alleviate the impact of pent up kinetic energy in both sabot and chemical rounds, the Argon-infused cells help to provide fire protection and an inert barrier of protection from a myriad of chemical anti-armor projectiles such as fluorine based weapons.

Quaternary Layer – Electrically Charged Copper Sheathing: In conjunction with the Masalan’s secondary layer of armor, this charged armor helps to diffuse (and sometimes completely placate) high energy sabot rounds through the process of electrical discharge.

Quinary Layer – Non-Infused Ballistic Ceramics: A layer of composite ceramic, specially forged and cast from Schultarian plasma waste disposal units, offers significantly heightened protection from kinetic energy weapons immediately after the charged copper plating. The ceramic structure, composed mainly of individual bricks held together in a solid titanium / tungsten mesh, offers drastic reduction in armor deformation from even the most severe of direct hits.

Senary Layer - Argon-Infused Tungsten / Carbon Fiber Honeycomb Framing

Septenary Layer – Depleted Uranium: The extreme density and rigidity of this material offers a significant layer of protection to capture any high velocity fragments that might have passed through the first seven layers of armor.

Octonary Layer – Cadmium / Lead-Infused Ballistic Ceramics: In addition to the kinetic protection offered by the ceramic, the high densities of cadmium and lead impregnated within this layer of armor coating helps to serve as a critical radiation-absorbing buffer. While specifically offering a greater amount of protection against stray neutron radiation, the small amount of lead present within the ceramic blocks drastically cut gamma radiation levels from even the most intense of sources down to levels tolerable enough for several hours of prolonged exposure.

Nonary Layer - Blended Titanium - Aluminum Plating / Padded Fiberglass: Designed to collect any remaining fragments that might have passed through the other eight layers and could potentially affect the crew or the internal components of the Masalan.
Approximate RHA Armor Values (Note: Length of Electric Reactive Armor Protection Time [Full Charge with Turbine Engine Support] ~ 15:00):
Front: 2470 mm (Chemical) / 2145 mm (KE) / 2640 mm (HEAT)

Function Description:

Based off the design principles of the self-guided Hornet class of Wide Area Munitions, the Kerga-Salnex has adopted the most reliable forms of Schultarian battlefield technology to date. From the fruits of countless prototypes, the SKC has developed a mine which has the capability of not only terminating enemy threats from a considerable distance away, but has the ability to be self terminated and selective in it's targeting procedures (placing the potential for civilian tragedy at an absolute minimum).

Once the on board sensor package has detected and identified a target to be of non-friendly intention, the petals that compose the support base fold in such a manner as to direct the mine towards the target within a variance of (+/-) 1.5 degrees of direction depending on wind conditions. Armed, the payload component of the mine is propelled in a ballistic arc towards its intended target using a propulsion apparatus similar to the rocket motors found on an average Soviet make RPG - 7. Using a combination of proximity fusing, active infrared targeting, and detonation timing, the shaped payload charge will detonate anywhere from one to five meters overhead of the target, exploiting the weaknesses of areas of high heat (such as engine compartments or fire control surfaces).

With an unusual proficiency for mobility kills, this mine has shown a battlefield effectiveness of 87% for direct tank hits in full scale battlefield testing. Of the actual impacts on the armored vehicles utilized in our most recent SKC tests, 55% of the successful detonations resulted in a loss of mobility, 45% destroyed the vehicles outright, and the remaining 5% damaged (but did not seriously impair) the tanks they engaged.

Promotional Photograph (640 x 480: 55 kb) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v352/emschultz/Schultarian%20Weaponry/Karga.jpg)

Following the collapse of Schultaria Prime's Treaty of Protective Union with the defunct nation of Catania-Marinov, the developing Schultarian nation lost its only source of defense in an ever dangerous international climate. Rather than invest hundreds of billions of merlons into an unwieldy and hideously expensive strategic stockpile of intercontinental ballistic missiles, the National Assembly established full funding to create a comprehensive and reliable long range missile and orbital defense platform at the same time the Spaten was making its very first orbital passes around the globe. After nearly 20 years of conceptual design and 5 years of practical development, the Kamor-IBBEM was declared effective enough for general defensive deployment and sale to the international community by the State Industries of Schultaria Prime: Designwerks.

Promotional Photograph (640 x 480: 39 kb) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v352/emschultz/Schultarian%20Weaponry/adal.jpg)

While the IBBEM platform is a widely utilized space borne anti-missile platform throughout the world, researchers in Schultaria Prime struggled to design a next generation system based on it's technical specifications; although it has served admirably in several conflicts (most notably in protecting the Nation of Lindim from a long range conventional missile barrage with a 65%-70% interception rate), the existing defensive platform has been pushed to its available limits. Several key obstacles made designing the Kamor-ADALALIEM quite difficult, but the lack in overall weaponry flexibility has been the most concerning. To compensate for the limitations of the Orobous / Doloc system of its predecessor, this next generation defensive platform offers an array of defensive measures designed to maximize mission success. In addition, numerous upgrades have been made to key sensor, computational, and thrust components to offer a state of the art defense platform unlike any other.

Promotional Photograph (640 x 480: 39 kb) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v352/emschultz/Schultarian%20Weaponry/tholo.jpg)

As the SKC put the ADALALIEM series of defensive orbital measures through final stages of development, the government of Schultaria Prime felt it within their political and geographical interests to expedite the research and development of yet another, more advanced, defense platform. While the technologies of the ADALALIEM were novel for the SKC and developed almost from scratch by The State Industries of Schultaria Prime, the countless terabytes of data accumulated from both practical live fire and computer simulation tests were not put to rest for very long. With the increasing threat of militarily offensive orbital nuclear weapons (with proliferation to states in questionable political stability), the THOLO'KNE'NN represents the soul of dogged Schultarian defensive resolve. Utilizing the combination of well established defense package along with several novel sensor and computational technologies, this satellite represents the most powerful collection of Schultarian defensive technologies to date.

-Early Sabot Prototype Shell (Mark II)

With armored vehicles adopting stronger and more exotic forms of armor designed to reduce the effectiveness of conventional kinetic and high-explosive anti-armor weaponry, researchers for the SKC determined the current pace of armor development quite distressing to designers of offensive weapon systems. As nations around the world are implementing highly sophisticated blended armor schemes along with a wider diffusion of carbon based nanotechnology, Schultaria Prime has found it in its best interests to develop a new type of weapon to serve both modern and post modern mechanized forces alike. Devoting nearly 400 million USD and nearly 18 months of research to combat the problem, our military engineers resorted to a compound with little previous history in a combat setting and have developed a new tank round with some amazing results. The result was Project Seerkex-Chema, a fluorine-based chemical anti-armor projectile.

The implications of this weapon on the course of nanotech armor development are almost as profound as the first gunpowder based weapons were on the fortresses of ages past. This projectile has been designed for use in active anti-armor roles where a tank crew might require additional protection from an enemy with superior defensive technology. The significant advantage to this weapon is the very nature of chemically based anti-armor projectiles; since the destructive capacity of the round is based on chemical instead of kinetic energy, the round's effective package does not lose power over long distances. As long as the shell impacts its target, the weapon will deliver the same amount of latent damage regardless of velocity or angle to the item in question.

Any nation that possesses a chemical synthesis industry that is equal to the technological resources of 1940 can produce the necessary raw materials designed for this weapon with minimal modification. However, the secrets to the success of this weapon on the battlefield are in the shell's rugged design and ability to contain the fluorine in a relatively inert setting prior to use. To maximize the shell's destructive potential and its available kinetic energy, this round uses the same principles as a modified sabot round to increase the penetration power of the shell prior to impact. The fluorine, compressed to the point of liquefaction, concentrates on the deep impact made by the sabot needle and injects its reactive contents through the continued force of the round.

Fluorine, despite the costs in refining and storing the element in pure form, is an ideal substance for an anti armor weapon because of its astounding chemical potency. Being the most reactive element known to man, the weapon's potential is especially acute in the fields of organic armor and hydrogen-based fuel sources; due to the nature of elemental fluorine, it has the ability to ignite any carbon-based material without an external energy source and react explosively with pure hydrogen. In the cases of armor materials, a 100 mm Seerkex-Chema shell has the effective ability of penetrating some 1,450 mm of hardened steel or 2,600 mm of replicated carbon-based nano fiber armor.

-An informal reply on the subject of blended armor materials

It really depends on the types of materials go into the composition of the armor. If the armor scheme was based on more elementally stable materials, the chemical shells would react against the armor but on a scale not nearly as significant as if it were to react against carbon, oxygen, or hydrogen-based compounds. However, the armor would still be impacted seriously on an atomic level by weakening chemical bonds around a significant area where the shell impacted, reducing its protective capacity to an extreme fraction of its former strength.

The round's physical shape is similar to a hypodermic needle on a very massive scale; in the case of blended armor like Chobham, this weapon wouldn't necessarily require full penetration through a tank’s armored components but rather make a serious mess of the internal armor scheme. The ideal shot with this round would allow the sabot to possess enough energy to pass the initial ablative armor plating so the chemical package would be able to penetrate into more sensitive portions of the armor (such as the layers designed for anti-fragmentation defense and fire protection). Used in the two barreled system of the Kerga-Masalan (one firing a chemical round and another firing a high explosive or sabot round), most average armored tanks would be able to stand no more than two or three salvos of such a mixed cannonade configuration.

Project Komomerenketsan ("Collective Memorial" Space Ship)

The United Socialist States of Schultaria Prime, in an effort to create a more efficient method of low mass orbital delivery, began a ninety five billion dollar project to develop the nation's first reusable space vehicle. With extensive support from SKC-Keital and the State Industries of Schultaria Prime: Designwerks the time table was set for SDC 120; at the time the project was established, the nation had suffered extensively from the throes of the Contact Day Massacre just six months hence. The loss of skilled aerospace engineers and practical design knowledge made the twenty one year endeavor appear an unachievable cause but, as a testament to the perseverance of Schultarian will and the adaptability of Schularia’s engineering establishment, the project, while still not officially designated, proved itself successful in accomplishing its design goals. In little more than sixteen years from its funding charter, a practical reusable space vehicle evolved from idealistic fancy to practical reality.

In commemoration of the Contact Day Massacre's Sixteenth Anniversary, the project was offered the official designation of Komomerenketsan at a formal gathering of nations who were instrumental in helping to rebuild Schultaria Prime’s advanced research laboratories. To those nations who have supported Schultaria Prime financially and materially, the scientists who sacrificed their lives for their craft, and many other superlative Schultarian and foreign individuals who have shown support for Schultarian scientific achievements, this newest aircraft design is dedicated in their memory.

Project Tla'voketsan ("Trekking Voyager" Space Ship)

Following the successful design, implementation, and widespread use of the Komomerenketsan class of advanced space planes, the United Socialist States of Schultaria Prime has taken the challenge of applying the lessons learned from this craft into developing a smaller, more affordable version of combined atmospheric / space vehicles for future civilian, commercial, and defensive uses. Citing the obvious logistical problems of the Komomerenketsan's enormous size and component complexity were major problems that simply could not be addressed during its construction and were largely ignored in the Komomerenketsan's primary design work. Given the obvious lack in available funding and physical testing facilities during the destruction of the Eldaimovey Advanced Research Laboratories, these limitations were exacerbated into a craft of gargantuan mechanical commitment.

However, with the success of the Komomerenketsan project as a tremendous technical and commercial achievement for Schultaria Prime's Aerospace industry, a renewed call by the engineering establishment for developing smaller and more efficient craft to take its place have been heeded by the Schultarian Government and the State Industries of Schultaria Prime: Designwerks. As such, a test bed for new fuselage geometries, boosting concepts, rocket engine designs, and even crew compartments had to be created in a moderately affordable and completely reusable package. Thus, out of the desire to create a smaller version of the Komomerenketsan, Project Tla'voketsan has been created to take the first major forays into this newer and smaller world.

Kerga-Tavas (Mark II) Medium Battle Tank
[Transilubrai Series]

Promotional Photograph (800 x 494: 75.5 kb) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v352/emschultz/newmodifiedtank1.jpg)

Primary Offensive Weaponry:

The core of the new Transilubrai series of Medium Battle Tanks centers around the Schultarian designed Kerga-Quavos (Mark II) series of 120 mm ETC smoothbore cannons originally pressed into active service some ten years prior to the Tavas’s initial design stage. While this updated version bears significant resemblance to earlier, Mark I, counterparts mounted on the Kerga-Lubrai tank series, the design of this weapon has been heavily modified to compete with armored vehicles whose heavier armor schemes would otherwise have encountered very little force opposition. With an elongated barrel length and operating on the principle of high density, high efficiency, propellant mechanisms seen in electro-thermal chemical cannons throughout the world the K-Qvo 02 can offer greater power and greater range than utilizing unassisted conventional propellants. For the most part, the general statistics and conventional firing operations bear little difference to their earlier Schultarian (as well as foreign) predecessors. With a barrel length of 45 calibers (5.4 meters) and operating on the same high efficiency plasma-generation system as all other conventional ETC weapons, the K-Ft 06 offers highly stable accuracy and an average muzzle velocity increase of 15-25% over conventional chemical propellant weapons of the same caliber.

Unlike most ETC cannons, however, the K-Qvo 02 cannon series utilizes a highly powerful and an extremely rugged superconductive COIL-based electromagnetic accelerator series to amplify the cannon’s already impressive muzzle velocities while providing the additional benefit of serving as a means of indirect rifling. Mounted on the barrel as an external sheath, the COIL barrel enhancement system directly integrates into the Tavas’s hearty turbine-enhanced Peldaer internal power plant. With proper implementation and spin alignment, the device can extend the total range of the weapon system by an additional 10% to 15% in addition to enhancing the cannon’s already impressive damage ratios at close range. Unlike most traditional the COIL systems, the electromagnetic assists on board the vehicle serve to enhance the kinetic energy of a round against structurally hardened targets while deliberately avoiding direct integration into the weapon system. Should the mechanisms powering or maintaining the COIL jacketing become damaged in battle or disabled for other essential, yet power intensive, operations the cannon can run on its ETC system without delays in functionality.

To manage the complexities of successfully loading, targeting, and placing the rounds from the K-Ft 06 system on target and with reasonable speed, the Transilubrai series of Medium Battle Tanks upgraded its autoloader package to address concerns from the SKC-Grovon (Schultarian Defense Forces – Army) Heavy Armor Divisions following Operation Brimstone. Compliant with SKC requirements for increased efficiency and ease of use, the autoloader’s more reliable electronic requirements and simplified mechanical design has increased the lifespan of the autoloader series to approximately 75 hours of sustained fire per barrel, or 45,000 shots while eliminating the need for an additional Technical Maintenance Operator to constantly oversee the loading operation. Several generations more advanced than the existing ‘Linear Alpha’ series used on the older Kerga-Lubrai tanks, the new ‘Pipont’ tandem automatic loader system now feeds at sustained rate of fire at 15 shots per minute with a 45% average reduction in mechanical failure compared to earlier models. Of course, in tactical situations where concentrated fire is absolutely imperative, the system is capable of feeding rounds approaching 24 rounds per minute, albeit with an increased risk of jamming over extended use.

This armored vehicle is also designed to provide ample short to moderate range cover in cooperation with mechanized and conventional infantry through suppressive fire provided by four 80 mm long range automatic mortars mounted on the port, starboard, and dorsal sides of the Tavas’s turret which can either be loaded manually or via a remote belt feed for sustained fire. Capable of independent targeting outside of the tank’s conventional firing computer, these cylindrical short mortars can lay down a significantly devastating series of high explosive, chemically caustic, diversionary (i.e. smoke and illuminating flares), or even less than lethal projectiles at ranges not feasible for the primary cannon to engage without causing severe unintentional damage to friendly military and civilian personnel or surrounding infrastructure.

-----

Central Defensive Systems (Passive):

Central to the redesign of the Tavas series of Heavy Battle Tanks was the integration and successful utilization of several key developments in Schultarian civil technology, namely advances in the fields of high density silicon electronics and real time chemo-organic pigments. While the new Transilubrai series is far more capable in engaging in radar stealth due to its radical departure from the Masalan / Lubrai chassis and turret system, the vehicle also has several key additions to the external casing that lend it considerable advantages in the field of combat. The surface coating of the Mark II system is not so much a singular layer of pigment as it is a combination of next generation RAM, Infrared dissipating dark matt, and highly sensitive organic camouflage. And while the radar absorbent material and black matt help to absorb and diffuse a portion of the energy used by enemy vehicles in their laser and radar rangefinders, the adoption of highly unusual and experimental chemo-organic chemicals give the Tavas a unique edge in combat. In the same way active electro-optical stealth is manipulated, the Tavas’s coating can be altered with subtle electrical charges via an active computing station that keeps track of the tank’s visible surroundings. However, unlike many artificial options, this coating can retain its color and masking presence even if the power required to sustain the color change is diverted to other systems.

Adding to the significant advantages of the Tavas’s outer coating, the electronics suite of the Transilubrai series is also outfitted with the latest in Schultarian ECM technology previously only capable of being fitted in only the heaviest of Schultarian tanks. Essential to this package is the ’Nackthos’ electromagnetic cancellation suite, adopting a significant tool in providing radar and radio interference to enemy communications equipment at extreme ranges. Operating on the principle of disruption through overwhelming data returns, the ’Nackthos’ maintains passive scanning of all available EM frequencies detected as high traffic transmission signals not located within the suite’s memory as certified civilian or Schultarian communication bands until an enemy transmitter is intercepted. Once a frequency has been targeted and identified as hostile, the ECM system bombards the transmission station (and all other receiver stations) with high data volumes of white noise and useless streams of electronic data.

-----

Central Defensive Systems (Armor):

As in any heavy armored unit, the Tavas’s critical weapons platforms, electronics, and ultimately the crew would be rendered ineffective in combat without a substantial protective armor scheme, and the Transilubrai series does not disappoint. The most unusual aspect of the tank, its geometry, represents a significantly radical departure from the more conventional schools of Schultarian interchangeability and utilitarianism. After years of critical debate and practical experimentation, the Tavas represents the first Schultarian battle tank to adopt a highly angled turret module. Designed first and foremost to resist the damages that could be inflicted by either combination high yield shape charge / sabot or by sabot - injected chemical rounds, the resistance posed by the Mark II’s defensive layering offers much greater protection than previously offered by any Schultarian vehicle of the same class.
Outer Layer - Explosive Reactive Armor: An array of specially engineered, Schultarian Deltex Ceramic, explosive shape charges are clustered around regions of the Tavas that are most vulnerable to HEAT class munitions. Specifically, these shape charges are customized to protect the areas of the Tavas most open to the sights of any enemy anti-armor crew, specifically the tank’s track skirting, forward armor plating, and turret sides are all fully encased in these reactive ceramic charges.

And the Nickel Iron Plate, while offering a limited amount of protection on its own, serves as a ground for the Tavas’s quaternary layer of defensive armor plating.

Tertiary Layer - Argon-Infused Tungsten / Carbon Fiber Honeycomb Framing: Designed as the first layer of high intensity protection in the Tavas armor scheme, this armor series was developed to slow down high velocity kinetic energy rounds and diffuse caustic chemical warheads well before penetrating the more resilient levels of the Transilubrai protective shells. While the honeycomb framing helps to alleviate the impact of pent up kinetic energy in both sabot and chemical rounds, the Argon-infused cells help to provide fire protection and an inert barrier of protection from a myriad of chemical anti-armor projectiles such as fluorine based weapons.

Quaternary Layer – Electrically Charged Copper Sheathing: In conjunction with the Tavas’s secondary layer of armor, this charged armor helps to diffuse (and sometimes completely placate) high energy sabot rounds through the process of electrical discharge.

Senary Layer - Blended Titanium - Aluminum Plating / Padded Fiberglass: Designed to collect any remaining fragments that might have passed through the other armor layers and could potentially affect the crew or the internal components of the Tavas.
The Approximate RHA Armor Values (and Their Distributions) are as Follows:
*(Note: Length of Electric Reactive Armor Protection Time [Full Charge with Turbine Engine Support] ~ 6:45)
Front: 2,100 mm (Chemical) / 1,820 mm (KE) / 2,240 mm (HEAT)
Turret: 2,420 mm (Chemical) / 2,100 mm (KE) / 2,590 mm (HEAT)
Side: 1,570 mm (Chemical) / 1,365 mm (KE) / 1,710 mm (HEAT)
Rear: 850mm (Chemical) / 735 mm (KE) / 910 mm (HEAT)

Electronics (Firing Solutions and General Combat Awareness):

Communications:

(Voice / Data) On the Battlefield

The primary method of Schultarian battlefield communication is an enhanced form of Bluetooth wireless networking technology; a three watt transmitter connected to both the tank's computers and basic radio transmitters possesses a range of 5 to 7 kilometers. Any data that passes though this system is carefully compressed and masked with a 256 bit encryption system to prevent a majority of battlefield espionage activities. Every armored unit in the SKC possess this communications technology, however this is only utilized in areas where communications security is essential or stealth must be preserved to insure mission success.

(Voice / Data) On Patrol or in Peacekeeping

The major detraction of this enhanced Bluetooth wireless system is also its greatest feature: limited range. While this prevents data from being intercepted by enemy forces dozens of kilometers away, it also prevents communication from detached mechanized patrols. As a backup to the battlefield communications system, a standard Frequency / Amplitude Modulation radio transmitter is essential equipment for each vehicle. However, this is only used in circumstances of low threat or emergency communication only.

Target Identification:

(Long Distance Identification) Beyond Standard Visual Range

Each Tavas Mark II is equipped with a standard RADAR suite primarily designed from the acquisition of ground based targets. Utilizing a combination of GPS and the networking capabilities of the Schultarian Bluetooth technology, individual armor units effective become a part of a larger interception grid. If armored groups are in contact with Kerga-Bieorn squadrons the grid expands offering real time three dimensional radar images of the battlefield. LIDAR is also utilized, but only by the operators of the primary cannon on each armored vehicle. Connected to the central processing units of each tank, these suites can effectively track hundreds of square kilometers of battlefield terrain; however, the systems for disseminating and processing this information on a tank by tank basis is still classified.

To prevent cases of friendly fire incidents, each armored vehicle is equipped with a Schultarian IFF anti fratricide system. A small device that's roughly the size of a cheap wristwatch, it is connected to the communications systems and the firing computers of each armored vehicle. Every device possesses a unique 2 kilobyte code, and "friendly" units are easily identified by their signature. Not only does this technology severely reduce the possibility of friendly fire, but also serves as a method of cataloguing each armored unit in the confusion of battle.

Each weapons operator is equipped with standard suites of Infra Red, Fifth Generation Night Vision, Passive X-Ray Analysis, and Optical Magnification up to a power of 64 times normal visual capabilities. In addition to this package, each armored unit also has a Schultarian holograph-capable millimeter band radar imager (third generation) mounted into the Tavas’s turret cupola .

-----

Power Plant:

Like all other Schultarian armored vehicles, the Transilubrai series of Tavas Medium Battle Tanks are powered by the 2,800 hp PDGt - HPMf794 (Peldaer) Multi-Fuel Turbine engine. Theoretically, given the relative mass of the Tavas series, this engine can produce enough power to drive such a vehicle up to a possible speed of 90 kilometers per hour on an ideal surface for an extended period of time. Although it runs considerably hotter and with a more sluggish acceleration rather than conventional diesel or gasoline motors of the same size and power, the Peldaer offers considerable advantages in terms of mechanical simplicity where the moving parts of the engine (i.e. the compressor blades and their corresponding connecting gear ratios) number far less than in comparable piston engines. Another positive aspect of the turbine engine is its logistical success in consuming any available combustible liquid, as stated from the Designwerks description…

”A positive result of the engine's propulsion system is its incredible fuel tolerance; while most piston driven engines require a specific fuel mixture, the Peldaer is tolerant of any combustible hydrocarbon substance. In several unorthodox tests the SKC, utilizing three retrofitted heavy battle tanks, were able to conduct combat maneuvers operating on a mixture of liquid methane and perfume. Instead of relying on the power of a reciprocating piston, the Peldaer operates on the concept of an internal pressurized turbine concept. In addition to its nearly limitless fuel tolerances, the ratio of power versus weight with engines of this caliber is far more beneficial than with any known piston driven engine.”

A rough outline of the SKC (Schultarian Kamor Collabrai | Schultarian Defense Forces)

The first Retraining and Rearmament Act established by the United Socialist States of Schultaria Prime laid the groundwork for the modern Schultarian Armed Forces as they are known today. From a small group of 20,000 poorly equipped volunteers and ex revolutionary militia, Schultaria Prime has attempted to establish a new model of military efficiency while keeping their total forces as minimal as possible.

Now, as Schultaria Prime is a center of massive technological breakthroughs and lucrative international trade, the nation once again feels the specter of imperialism on it's backdoor. However, since Schultaria Prime abhors the creation of offensive military systems (the research culture of Schultaria Prime considers pure weapons research to be a waste of time), indigenous technology has been slow in development. Until the passage of the SKC Standardization and Upgrades Act in SDC 85, 100% of all Schultarian armaments were either completely foreign produced or the technologies were bought from non Schultarian arms manufacturers.

Nice, nice, how were those photos and videos made?

The captured in game photos and raw video was predominantly captured with FRAPS [http://www.fraps.com/] wherever in game screenshot credits are noted, which is usually at the end of each labeled post. I'd highly recommend visiting the sites labeled as the source material for my multimedia (especially Orbiter and Empires) because I believe that both projects are worthwhile efforts and should be credited as such.

In terms of editing the pictures, the screenshots were cropped, resized, and converted from .bmp to .jpg with Picture It! (because I can't afford Photoshop).

As for the video clips, the raw video was first captured in small bits and then compiled into one large video file using Virtual Dub, a free editor that can do a lot of pre-production work (if you feel ambitious) [http://www.virtualdub.org/]. Afterwards, I completed editing the remaining excess unusuable video, affixed it with text, and assigned a soundtrack from my small music library with my system's generic Windows Movie Maker. Generally, I didn't spend much time in producing the videos (I tried to work with what data I could capture around a music clip rolling around in my head), so the whole process "from concept to can" usually takes me about 2 hours when I'm extremely motivated.

Be forewarned however, for every clip of about 1 minute in raw footage at 25 frames a second FRAPS will consume nearly 2 gigabytes of disk space; you'll need a reasonable video editor to convert the bulky .avi file into a more manageable .wmv or .mpg for use on the web.

I wish I had something more substantive to say, but all I can really reply with is "I do what I can"; however, I do thank you for your enthusiasm and hope you enjoy what new tools I have in store for this thread in the near future.

And, for the rest of the I.I. community, a BUMP for the Evening.
