Rebellion In Young State

OUTSIDE GOVERNMENTAL HOUSING BLOCK A (HIGH OFFICES)
Stepping out from the warmth of his bright home into the ankle-deep snow Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Michael Andrews began his morningly march to the car which would escort him to the capitol building. Not fifteen steps down the sidewalk in front of the Governmental Housing Building, two officers called his name frantically, he turned, and as the looks on their faces registered, he knew something was drastically wrong.
Lucida Sans is a young nation, a social democratic state which is ruled (for the most part) by popular soverignity. There is, however, a growing minority which would like nothing more than to overthrow the "regime" in power. The main reason for this is the government's opposition to big buisiness. Although the policies have existed for a long time, recently upon the appointment of Prime Minister Sam Taylor, they have become more drastic. The minimum wage has been raised and the corrupt private sector has been persectued for crimes that had been before allowed to go unnoticed. Having threatened to seceed from the union, they have taken the name "United Republican States of Lucida Sans". A few days ago they withdrew all their political representatives from government, and brought them to the Ottowa province, in the Southwest corner of Lucida Sans, to meet and discuss options. Though the government has undergone hours of relentless negotiation, it seems nothing can please the URSLS. From the moment he put his foot on the ground and tracked over his footprints heading back in the building, General Andrews knew the URSLS had made a first move.
"Sir, the Prime Minister is on the phone", Major General McAlpine informed just as General Andrews picked up the red telephone in the Emergency Briefing Room of GHBA. Lucida Sans possess a very small army, and considering it's population of nine million, it's easy to see why. With crime having become almost nonexistant over the years, there has never been any need to put down an insurgency. This may be why as General Andrews heard the details of the attack, his jaw was pulled towards the floor.
About one quarter of the country, the industrial Ottowa Province has seceeded in its entirety, and declared war on Lucida Sans. The occupation has sprawled out, overtaking undermanned military stockrooms and crushing opposition. In a country of nine million, it is estimated that the URSLS has about 600,000 volunteers in it's army. This figure includes many with military training, as the two bases in the Ottowa Province went willingly along with the conspiracy. There were dissenters among them, but those who spoke out were summarily executed or imprisoned. Casualties are estimated at 12.5 thousand militarily, and very few non-insurgent civilians.
Lucida Sans requests the help of anyone avaliable before this gets any more out of hand. We are a young country, of only 15 years, and may not be able to rise victorious from this trial without assistance. There is no telling when the URSLS will stop, considering they have armored vehicles and air-strike capabilities on their side. If you wish to assist us, we will be in your debt in the future and as we expand and develop a military of our own will be quick to grant it to you if you are in need.
(ooc: if you want to assist those in the URSLS you may, just reply with that as your intent.)

Official Government Communiqué
To: The Government of Lucidia Sans
Our nation has recently heard of the trouble that your nation is experiencing. We would be willing to help mediate a solution to this problem, and if you would like send the 4th, 5th, and 6th divisions of the Sansian military to help act as peacekeepers and make sure that any more atrocities are not committed.
Sincerely,
High Councilman Mĕane

This was an interesting situation developing, and Harold Mĕane knew it. On one hand there was the potential for lucrative trade with a newly formed nation that cared little for curbing business practices, and being the larger nation they could make some gains for it. On the other hand there had been some outcry against actions taken by the government.
Harold decided it best to see what would happen at the moment. He had already authorized the sending of a communiqué to the other government in hopes of outside mediation, and he was unsure if the offer would be accepted. He sat back in his leather chair, sighing as he continued to think about the situation. It would probably be best to contact the other party as well and offer mediation and advice so they wouldn’t have the international community breathing down their necks and having a potential new trading partner taken away from the government.

Official Government Communiqué
To: The URSLS
It has come to the attention that your group has attempted a break away from the nation of Lucidia Sans. We would like to aide you in your attempt for independence and would be glad to help mediate your discussions with Lucidia and reach an agreement that would be beneficial to all parties. In order for us to make sure you are around until we can attempt this we suggest that you stop any military action against Lucidia so you do not have to deal with the international community ripping what little sovereignty you have no from your hands. Also toning down any of the arrests and executions will go a long way to your nation not being summarily squashed by larger ones.
Sincerely,
High Councilman Mĕane

From: Lord High Chancellor Aníron Danfalas, Head of His Majesty's Government of Little India
It is with great regret that His Majesty heard of the social and political unrest in Lucida Sans.
Sadly, we are unable to send troops to aid against the URSLS, it is the High King's wish that Little Indian peacekeepers are sent to your capital and to that of the newly proclaimed United Republican States of Lucida Sans.
The High King wishes to try and talk the separatists back into Lucida Sans, averting a costly and socially damaging civil war.
We will send our negotiators to Lucida Sans as soon as possible.

05-12-2005, 20:25
The Democratic Republic of Pracowity announces it's support of Lucida Sans' rightfully elected government. It also announces, sadly, that it can provide no troop support, as Pracowity has no standing military, and the police are too occupied with the nation's own crime rates.
The Prime Minister states, however, that he has full confidence allied forces will stop the seperatists, peacefully or through shooting.

THIS AFTERNOON, 4:54 PM
THE CAPITAL
The Canadian and Pantycellan troops amassed at the capital city, as chinooks and massive transport aircraft circled above. Lucidan Prime Minister Sam Taylor sits in his control room and converses with the leaders without whose support the war would seem at this point considerably more daunting. Fully consolidated, the Lucidan loyalist army totalled about 800,000; meaning that they held little ground over the powerful URSLS (United Republican States of Lucida Sans). The plans had been laid and it was time to move out.
As General Andrews rushed to see the Prime Minister, he passed a group of peacekeeping troops and quickly withdrew his ID clearance card, in anticipation of a search. These groups of peacekeepers had kept the security around crucial government territory rigid, and reassured the political figureheads greatly. Returning from the Office of the Prime Minister mere minutes later, the general had his clearance. With all hope the union would be restored.
The first objective was to push the URSLS back into its officially claimed territory, the Ottowa Province, and out of the land which it had encroached upon in the following invasion. The military units which were stationed near the border had already begun fighting. To achieve the first objective, the involved military would undergo three main steps. Firstly, the skirmishes already taking place between the badly outgunned (and quickly dying) Lucidan loyalists and the URSLS elite would be supported as the second objective of installing bases and HQs was being undertaken. Thirdly, a ground assault, preceeded by air, would be launched, first taking key cities in the far north and south and pinning those in the middle, cutting them off from supplies. Knowing that the most pivotal forward headquarters of the URSLS would be located in this zone between the flanks, it is the hope of military commanders that the base can be made to surrender and the tacticians inside captured and interrogated.
APPROXIMATELY SIX HOURS LATER
THE CITY OF HOLLAND, AT THE EDGE OF THE INVASION
The bunkers which would hold possibly the headquarters of the promenient officers possible debating the most paradigm decisions in Lucidan history were being assembled, and standing in the cool air one could hear distant sounds of artillery barrages. There were three main battles, occurring at choke points between the battered Lucidan loyalists who had just recently been reinforced by armor and troops and artillery, and the determined and diciplined URSLS. However, the new supplies and troops had tipped the scales, and before long the URSLS would be heading back towards the amassment of their own military. A tempory "victory" for the Lucidans.

Canada-Quebec forces moved against a URSLS village near their province. Estimates had soldiers at three hundred rebel soldiers. Several howitzers opened fire with artillery shells before the Canadian infantry and mechanical units opened fire on the rebel positions. There was 1,500 Canadian soldiers in this attack on the rebel area.
Machine gun fire and explosions were loud as the Canadian forces continued ot fight near the village. Shells whizzed by the infantry soldiers and slammed into the rebel held village. Hopefully not many civilians were killed but this attack was important to the Canada-Quebec soldiers.
Initial reports indicated that 2 Canadian soldiers had been killed in the fighting and over a dozen had been wounded.

The flanking plan has taken effect and is working well. With the Canada-Quebec soldiers fighting fiercely and the Lucidan loyalists methodically sweeping buildings and moving though towns, almost the entire non URSLS territory has been regained. The next task will be to move into the province, once the flanking plan has been completed and the rebel HQ apprehended, and this will not be an easy one.
So far, the only battle which could be considered a loss was a result of a misinterpretation of communication between the Lucidan First Infantry and a support unit of long range artillery, which was supposed to disable some heavy weapons positions and armor that the URSLS had to prepare for defense. The small village, called Traversal, took the lives of 163 Lucidan loyalists to overrun. To make matters worse, the artillery began firing and continued for a few minutes with the Lucidan troops in the village before they were made aware of the situation.

Two villages had been taken from the rebels by the Canada-Quebec army. At least 100 rebels had been killed in the fighting and several hundred more had been captured and there was several civilians casualties. However Canada-Quebec casualties were light. Only four soldiers had been killed in the fighting and 37 soldiers wounded.
------
Lucida San, Capitol:
The caskets of the four soldiers killed in the fighting in Lucida Sans were carried across the airfield by six soldiers to each casket. They lowered them onto a florklift that stuck the caskets into a transport plane. Being the first fatalities of the fighting, most soldiers were somber but they also knew their duty was almost over. Hopefully, only a few more soldiers had to die.
