To Pass The Laurels of Leadership; Ducal Elections

Yafor 2

OOC:To clarify exactly which parties are running, what they stand for, and why this election is important, I'm adding a (brief) overview of all the parties, what they stand for, and how they are connected. It is important to remember that all these parties are what they are in the "Yaforite Sense", so the Capitalists are not as capitalist as in other countries and that even the right-wingers are left-wing. After all, "left-wing"is synonumous to "Yaforite". Thank you.

BIC:

Yaforite politics is regarded, by some, as a "murky maze of underhand dealings and backstabbing". This vision, of Yafor 2 not actually a country which is obsessed with human rights, people's rights, and the treatment of our world, and instead as a nation mired in the darker side of politics, is not very far off the mark.

In Yafor 2 is one large political alliance, the Liberalist Alliance. Two of the political parties are not part of the alliance, but the others have joined, years ago. When the Empire was thrown out (OOC Note: Pre-RP era) and the Grand Democratic Duchy established, a group of political parties joined together to erase dissention, to combine their ideals, and to leave all satisfied. Thus, this alliance is not one of nations, but of parties.

But now, the waning days of the once great alliance are here. Anger is driven into the breach between the parties, and this election stands for one thing; the first time every party will run. Still in the LA, but wanting out are the: YKMK or Humanitarian/Environmentalist Party (the former is an acronym in Jakallan), the current leading party, the Socialist Party, which advocates and era of economic change, the Libertarian-Capitalist Party, which does the same, though in an entirely different way, and the United Centrists, a group of loosely-tied, centrist, parties. Outside the LA are the Radicalist Jakallan Party, whose name is self-explanatory, and the Militaristic-Capitalist Party, an offshoot of the other.

A Closer Look....

The Liberalist Alliance

1)The Humanitarian/Environmentalist Party or YKMK

Of all of the parties, the Humanitarian/Environmantalists are, by far, the most well known throughout the world. The YKMK engineered the welcoming of the Yaforites into the world stage and, so, they are well known in nations such as Pacitalia, Sarzonia, and other Woodstock Pact nations, plus being the incumbents. They are what their name says, both Humanitarian and Environmentalist, and left-wing, but still, a brand of capitalist.

Economically, the YKMK are capitalist, favoring that system, though the restrictions on each businesses are regulated expanisively, as the title of the party can say. Also, needed amenities are provided, free, by the government. The budget of the YKMK is spent on Education, Environmentalism, Human Rights, and Civil Affairs. Incumbent Rudiv Sodo, the canidate of the YKMK, is expected to win the election, though not by as many as last time, where other LA parties left the elections of be in his cabinet.

2)The Socialist Party

The Socialists are, of course, socialists. Simply, their plan for the Yaforite trade deficit is to give government control over all businesses, to use the gained money from these businesses to gain more for each person, to encourage patriotism and to abolish crime. Canidate Kjurat Lovitad has stated that erasing the $120 billion deficit is his primary duty. Expected to gain quite a few votes for their economic leaning as well as that pledge, the Socialists are expected to place 3rd, as of the last polls.

3)The Libertarian-Capitalist Party

Unlike the other capitalist party, the Libertarian-Capitalists are, obviously, libertarian. Canidate Josain Alanor has stated, repeatedly, that, in his personal opinion, the Yaforite government interferes far too much in the private lives of the people. In his words, "...The deficit is a product of outragous spending on the part of our corrupt federal government. Our people are not only threatened by this behemoth, but also need to escape it...I pledge I will reduce the deficit, while releasing the people from the holds of this monster..." In the event that he is elected, most likely, the country will gain a powerhouse of an economy. The base of support of the L-C P, rich foreign (mainly Pacitalian) businessmen have enormous political clout. Alanor has raised a reputed $21 million dollars, and will continue raising money. Expected to finish 2nd, the Libertarian-Capitalists are a strong party with a chance for the ultimate goal.

4)The United Centrists

There is not much to explain about the UC, except that they are in the middle. The concept of "Centrism" in Yafor 2 is not established at all, nor indeed explained, so the core of the LA, the UC, are a group of parties with conflicting interests. Usually, they take the middle ground in arguements, not siding with either side, but not establishing their position either. Not to be taken seriously, the UC are still squabbling about which canidate they should choose. Nonetheless, the UC hold a large-ish groups of votes that may decide the election this year.

Other Parties

5)The Radicalist Jakallan Party

The RJP are not, by any sense of the imagination, powerful. Among international people, they are considered "ignorant" and "stupid". Controlled by the High Korut, the RJP gain the majority of their support among the less educated hill tribes, the Alakarasm. Essentially, the RJP are, to put it clearly, a religious, non-secular, party who are ruled with a iron hand. While their opinion on each issue is not clearly defined, they are subject to the whims of the High Korut.

6)The Militaristic-Capitalist Party

Canidate Alaz Sirlon has stated that "we are not, at all, to be affiliated with the Libertarian-Capitalists". A breakoff from that party, the Militaristic-Capitalists are very similar to the other issue wise. They are interested in complete private control over all sectors and erasing the deficit. They disagree with the Libertarian-Capitalists on one point, however, that the military should be strong. They others state that the military should be a private institution, like a business, while these state that the military should be doubled in size. Sirlon is expected to finish 4th or 3rd.

Yaforite politics: not so dynamite
Upcoming ducal elections in the Grand Democratic Duchy
have all the makings of a true Shakespearean comedy

From The Economist print edition, week of 3 December

AJER and TIMIOCATO

There's an old Halladi proverb that says "strength and courage in the face of adversity brings glory". It is an all-too-true passage of wisdom now, as the Grand Democratic Duchy of Yafor 2 prepares to elect its next duke later this month. Unfortunately for the incumbent, the blood on his hands - in the eyes of his closest allies - combined with both intentional and unintentional political influence from said nations, will make for a tricky ride as the campaign winds down and Yaforites go to the polls.

Rudiv Sodo is the incumbent duke we so humbly mention. He is nothing less than an intellectual, a statesman and a compatriot of his land. However, his handling of the war against Generia has drawn sharp criticisms from the Pacitalian government, as well as PEST, the organisation based in Pacitalia, Euroslavia and Sarzonia that deals with human rights abuses and war crimes abroad. The methodology of Yafor 2's elite secret agent team, SRACH, usually comes under fire from Pacitalian Agustinate of Defence Eleftherios Venizelos Jr. and Pacitalian offers to train the team with PCIC and SAFD knowhow have been turned down repeatedly by the Yaforites, something that irks Venizelos.

In addition, Sodo is in the Pacitalian crossfire in terms of domestic economics. Sodo is widely seen as responsible for the implosion of the Yaforite economy as the government "concentrated too greatly on environmental matters", according to Agustinate of Finance Luciano Abrigo Cannavaro. "They did not budget properly and the economy is way past the point of implosion." The current average yearly earning of a Yaforite is a mere Đ36.34 less an astounding 100% income tax rate. Of course, the tax rate would not be as high if the government had enacted sound fiscal policy and balanced budget transfers, but with a total budget of $158bn US spread over a population of just over two billion, Cannavaro says "there is a lot of work to do". Even with the total taxation, Yafor's government has no way to provide its citizens with the necessary social programs one would expect out of such drastic monetary revocation. Signore Cannavaro has said that the next government in Yafor 2 must "respond positively to Pacitalian offers to help. We are allies and friends, and it breaks our heart to be turned away when we are trying to make the pain go away for so many people."

The Libertarian-Capitalist Party (L-C P) proves the best challenger to defeating the Sodo government. And although Pacitalians and many others around the world like Sodo, they question how much longer Yafor's social structure and fabric can hold in such poor, deplorable conditions. In fact, the biggest indicator of how bad it actually is: Pacitalian charitable donations make up 71% of a Yaforite's yearly income. With a different government aimed more at fixing the crushing poverty of Yaforites, Pacitalian "out-of-pocket TLC" would not be as important as the advice and assistance of Pacitalian officials.

And that is why it is so important that the L-C P gets noticed (and elected) during this campaign. They are already, according to Yaforite media, the most viable challenger to Sodo's envirolibertarian YKMK party, but the most farcical thing in the messy elections of the Grand Democratic Duchy is that Yaforites still [i]want Sodo leading their country despite Sodo's pungent political redolence and the country's horrific and emotionally disparaging socioeconomic conditions. Yaforites may not understand that a capitalist party can still be concerned about the environment, such as Pacitalian Prime Minister Timothy Ell's FPD government, and their allegiances and hearts lie with social democracy. It is not so important for the L-C P to convince Yaforites they need rightist government to fix the problems, just that they need a government, regardless of political difference, capable of righting the wrongs.

[[ OOC: Sorry, Yafor, I intended to have this up Friday evening, but I am dumb. But it's here now! :p so yay. enjoy! ]]

Sirlon Labels Alanor as "Vote-Frauder"!

Chelmar, Yafor 2 - In a rally today, Militaristic-Capitalist Elected Ducal Canidate Alaz Sirlon has declared that rival Libertarian-Capitalist Canidate Josain Alanor is a "vote-frauder" and "will stop at nothing to gain the ducall honors, that pig." Alanor has not, as yet, voiced a defense.

Mr. Sirlon, who, by the way, has been to prison twice on charges of "reckless driving" and "possetion of alcohol", has embarked on an unusually outspoken and rude campaign this year, an incredibly uncustomary display of rudeness forbidden by all rules of custom, though not forbidden by and written rules. Nonetheless, this is an amazingly impertinent exhibition by one who's legitimacy as a campainer has already been called into serious question before.

"That idiot is a liar!" shouted Alaz Sirlon at a rally in Eastern Chelmar today, "He is a fool who will stop at nothing to gain the ducal honors, that pig. Yes, a pig! He is so bent on becoming Elected Duke that he will not only steal the ideas of others, who are much greater then him, but he will also take their money! Yes, my friends, I am sad to state that the so-called Libertarian-Capitalists' so-called Canidate Josain Alanor is a VOTE-FRAUDER." The cheers of his supporters greeted this statement.

While Josain Alanor has not yet replied to this, one of his closest advisors has released a press statement purportely stating that "The statements earlier made by Militaristic-Capitalist Canidate Alaz Sirlon are false". This is obviously the truth, which is something which Sirlon needs to learn about.

OOC:*sarcastically* Yah, I did. [/SARCASM] Seriously, though, your "Letters to the Economist" thread may receive LOTS of mail ("Wonder why you made it?"). How did Timothy Ell respond to the article?
