To insure that the USA did not try to keep the canal for themsleves he got a clause added to the deal that stated that the USA would only recieve revenue for 15 years after the canal opened and that the Imperial Army would be stationed in the Isthmus. The project was soon completed with increaseing industry in Gran Colombia and the canal officially opened on September 1, 1914. The canal generated a large ammount of income for the RIGC and started improveing the economy of the nation. In 1918 Emperor Jose I began a massive public education effort createing many schools and allowing free entrance to them. In that same year universal suffrage was granted for those over 20 and a new clause was added to the constitution stateing that succession would be determined by a vote in the Senate between the Emperors heirs. On June 21, 1920 Emperor Jose I died of natural causes at the age of 68. His eldest son was elected to succeed him and was crowned Emperor Jorge I on July 14, 1920. He continued his fathers education refroms and began a socialist economy and a welfare system. On January 12,1922 Emperor Jorge I gave his father the posthumous title Father of the Imperial Republic and he has since then been known as Jose the Founder. In 1926 the government began createing more arms manufacturers and modernizeing its armed forces. By 1936 they were on par with the BBF and their economy was rivaling that of the FE.
