Attempted coup by the MDU and its ally discovered and put down by the members of the "Algerian Guard" resulting in the outlaw of both parties and the trial of its key leaders who recieved sentances of life imprisonment and exile. Some were found innocent of major charges and were pardoned.

The US helps with the development of the oil deposit by the beginning next year (1938) in exchange for 1 production points a year going to the US for 13 years.

The US upgrades the nations fighter unit from using P26 "Peashooter" to the P40 "Warhawk", also upgrades the millitary units of Algeria to tech level 6 units.

The Emir gives his full support to the MEU government following the outbreak of civil war in Persia and Iraq, Algeria lends 3 production points to be returned in 1945 to the MEU.

1937-The Emir meets with local religous leaders and announces reforms to balance between the principles of "Westernism" and Religon.

President Khalid Ibn Hashim,

My congratulations on your successful election.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite either you or a representative to an international conference being held in Potchefstroom. Every independent state in Africa has been invited to send a delegation, and it is my hope that the conference will prove a success.

Of course, I must inform you as to the nature of this meeting. Currently, every African state is threatened by the Communist and Imperialist nations of the world. Algeria herself was only recently freed from the bonds of colonialism; I am sure the memory is quite fresh.

This pan-African conference will establish a united front of African nations, that we may better oppose both Communist and Imperialist nations which seek to undermine our sovereignty.

God Bless,
James Hertzog
Prime Minister of South Africa

Concerned over the increased authortirianisim of the "emir", the parliment has acted to approve a resolution creating the post of Grand Vizier who will be the people's representative, the parliment, which consist mainly of the MDA and of sociallists, has thus undermined the emir's power, the emir has been unavaillable for comment.

In a shocking move by the emir's party, the MDU has approached the Algerian North Star, a moderately sociallist party in parlament, for an alliance, having accepting this coallition reigns the largest in parlament.

Many religous leaders have expressed their criticisim over the matter, there are also rumors that the emir will denounce his party.

Members of the intelligence agency have unveilled a plot by high ranking officials of the MDU and the Algerian north star to initiate a coup and force the emir to resign for health reasons.

A weapons cache was found which is believed that it was going to be used in what the traitors called "The October Revolt", upon interrogation most of the traitors confessed to their crimes, ranging from foot soldiers to palace servents, each will be dealt with accordingly.

It appears that the traitors had no outside forign help but had underestimated the power of the government to protect its people.

The main conspirators, who include the Grand Vizier, behind the plot were arrested, tried and found guilty of high treason and sentanced to death by shooting, the sentance was carried out swiftly.

The MDU and Algerian North Star have been declared outlaw and all members were put under arrest, however after careful investigation it was found that some of the members were innocent and were pardoned, the rest of the traitors were either sentanced to life in prison or exiled to Greece.

The government warns however that there still a small group of millitants still at large but assures the people that they will be brought to justice soon enough.

The emir has expressed his regret that such a thing should happen in Algeria and promises swift action to ratify the situation.

It is a proud moment in our history! for the jubilent cries of the people can be heard all over Algeria as they greet their soldiers and protecters as they march through the capital.

"The newly formed Infantry Unit is not only a show of the strength of the people of Algeria" said chief of army Omar Ibn Suliman,"but it is also a sign that we are entering a new era, an era of prosperity and strength".

The parade is headed by the Emir Ibn Hashim and the Sultan of Morroco, along with the cheif US millitary advisor, Omar Ibn Suliman and the MEU advisor.

Also participated in the march is members of the Garrison Unit who are expected to be disbanded after being honored in a ceremony for their part against the attempted coup "The October Revolt".

The Emir , later in the day, promised to maintain a strong alliance with Morroco and the rest of the LTA through the Global Alliance Treaty and is probably going to undertake measures for this.

The members of the Algerian Guard stand with their heads held high as they were addressed by the Emir, "We honour today those who protected the country in its darkest hour, even as our country was prospering as flower blooming in spring, bandits and robbers attempted to nip Algeria from its buds, but our valiant guardsmen -ever vigillent- vanquished these maurauders and gave them justice.

The country thanks them, and express their gratitude to each and one of them and wishes them a long life of prosperity"

Honorary Scimitars and Medals are presented to the members of the guard, the officers express their gratitude to their men and promise the nation to maintain the same quality of command as they transfer to the newly formed infantry unit. Many men bade farewell to their companions as they move on to a civillian life-style.

Today his exellency the Emir and his government announced that legislation was passed earlier today in parlament to initiate a bold program which aims to bring civillisation and progress to the many nomad population.

This has been welcomed by many members in the parlament dubbing ithe move as "one of the first great steps forward". However, there has been some question and doubt on how effective the program will be and how will the government finance it. When asked the government have confirmed that the program will have to have much thought put into it before it is put into action and therefore a study will be made by a comitee which will be appointed by the government.

The comitee will comprise of humanitarian workers, economists, bankers and development experts most notably:

Fuad Wafi, Under-secretary to the Minister of armaments and economy, a veteren development expert with good economic experiance, expected to head the comitee.

Baqir Saleh, Economist, studied at the United States, recently been involved in the development of trade and commerce in Algeria.

Nels Jakob, a distinguished Swedish humanitarian worker, served many posts including: China, Sudan, Somalia and India.

Hjalmar Schacht, a notable German banker who has advised the government on many occasions on the its monetary policy.

Zahi Nagib, noted agricultural development expert.

The comitee will study the situation for the next three years; analyizing and prioritizing the areas according to which need the most effort, ranging from from economic development to awarness campaigns.

Clearly the government has its work cut out for it as one of these nomads stated, "I will not allow anyone to interefere with my way of life! just because they abandoned their heritage and culture, just because their so-called "civillisation" is liked by forigners, that doesn't mean that we have to bend to their will! My forfathers lived of this land this way and we have held our heads high always! not like those who live in shame and dishonour! not like those who immersed themselves in disgraceful vice!"

The Emir has expressed his confidence in a speech before the parlament, "In all parts of the world we will find people who will oppose change, not for their own personal gain but for their fear; their fear of the unknown, their terror of what may be yet to come, for who knows does what the future holds to us? But I know one thing: This obstacle, the obstacle of fear, will always, and forever, be present, perhaps more strongly in ourselves than others. But as always we have to overcome it with our fervent belief, backed with our logic and reason, that what are we doing is the right thing and that our conciouss is clear.

So in short, my brothers, I tell you that the only thing we have to fear is our own ignorance and terror and to seek out the destruction of these two, for they are the root of evil and hate."

Disturbed by the recent events in the MEU, the Emir has issued a stiff message of condemnation of the disgraceful acts comitted by the insurgents in the MEU in Iran and called for solidarity with "our brothers from the east".

The media has been able to cover the attacks on civillians (OoC:mainly by using western sources) and the populace (middle and higher class mostly) were appalled and gave support to the Emir's condemnation.

Security Minister, Ahmad Ibn Badis, has advised the Emir that the insurgents in the MEU may be attempting to recruit hardliners to join their cause in various islamic regions. Furthermore he strongly advises that the statement of condemnation could invoke the hardliners wrath on the government and that the preperation and the formation of a special police unit to cope with possible threats.

This resolution was passed in parlament, but with a substantial amount of what may be known as "backstage string-pulling" (OoC: This last bit is secret of course), as many failed to see such a need for such a unit and feared that it may further show Algeria to the international comunity as an authoritarian state, since socialist and communist parties are still outlawed since the attempted armed takeover nearly a decade ago.

In other news, The Emir is due to meet with local Imams and religous leaders to hold discussions about recent events and how can measures can be made to reach a balance between Westernisim and Religion.

in game terms, this will give Algeria 2 production points a year at base production effective in 1938, and in 1940, this will increase to 5 as facilities are constructed etc. However, it will cost Algeria 12 points for infrastructure.

The US is willing to help with that beginning next year (1938) in exchange for 1 of those production points a year going to the US for 13 years. (basically the equivilant of Algeria borrowing the money and then paying it back).

The Big oil companies now approach Italy about exploration in Libya and Tunisia, and Morocco about exploration there. Naturally, all will agree (they want free money too after all). Libyan oil discoveries next year (1938), with a similiar output and investment pattern to Algeria. Sadly, Tunisia and Morocco have no oil.

Oil is also found in Arabia, but the Big 7 companies aren't real excited about investing there at the moment.

The price of oil has increased to the point were Algerian and Libyan oil fields are worthwhile for investment purposes. Primarily due to the reduction in output from the MEU and uncertainity causing the price to rise.

The Emir has concluded talks with local religous leaders to reach an agreement on a comprimise between Religon and "Westernisim". Several measures are to be proposed to parlament, these include:

-Establishing "Baytu-Mal-El-Muslimeen" where the annual "Zakaa" -an amount of asset (money, crops..etc) which is required to be paid by a muslim who, by definition of Islamic scholars, own savings or trade goods (including cash set for trade) which value is more than the value of 85g of gold and have been in the posession of that muslim for a whole year, the amount will be 2.5% of the total value of these items. The value collected will be used to help the needy (Social Welfare). A commision will be set up to insure no one illeagally takes advantage of this system.

Naturally, Several other taxes have been reduced to ease the strain on the population. However, a tax similar in structure to the "Zakaa" described above will be inforced on Christian and Jewish comunities under a diffirent name.

(OoC: For simplicity's sake, there should be no effect on Algeria's Economy as this should be included in social spending)

-Public alcohol consumption and smoking is not allowed and is heavily fined, however in Christian and Jewish neighborhoods, licenced areas for such practices are allowed.

Several tarifs were also put on Tobacco and Alcohol, making them more expensive.

-Businesses are allowed to function on Christian and Jewish Holidays, however, Christians and Jews retain the right to take the day off on their major holidays and will be payed their wages by the government.

-Movie theaters can have the content of their movies controlled by the government if they are deemed to be contain immoral content by a censorship comitee elected by the local populace directly but regulated by a representative of the government. Movie Theaters attended by a majority of Christians and/or Jews are exempted from this.

Emir Khalid Ibn Hashim, Emir of Algeria, has issued a statement of condemnation against Soviet actions in Persia and against the MEU's weakness to prevent such an atrocity.

He asks for the ending of sociallist interference in the Internal affairs of a soverign neighboring country.

In Algeria the media and several polliticians question the motive given (For the killing of one pilot do you incinrate 12,000 people? good thing it was a pilot) for the act and even speculate that the act was a "Show of Power" to the neighbors of the Soviet nation and to the rest of the world as surely the millitary commanders tested the effects of their weaponry before using them.
