Changing the future of warfare

We here at MierTech are pleased to annouch the finalisation of our newest addition - out MTN-B03 Vaul SD! The second SD designed by MierTech, it is the first to be produced by us, and will be used in the Phoenixius Navy. Currently our produciton of the Vaul is taken up by the Phoenixius allocation, but when we open our new store within the next few years (next few RL days) we estimate that we will have the capacity to construct them for the international community.

And so onto the details:

MTN-B03 Vaul class Trimaran Super Dreadnaught
As Phoenixius grew in size, it needed a more powerful ship in its navy, similar to the other Super Dreadnaughts that plowed the seas. It contracted MierTech to supply the ship, and they have - the Vaul is the answer. Though slightly smaller than other SDs, it has a decreased flight capacity so that more weapons could be fitted on board. The Vaul is intended to primarily act as a Command ship, with intense shore bombardment capabilities. In fleet engagements, the Vaul will act to destroy opposing SDs in the enemy fleet before moving on to weaker targets.

Design
The Vaul is, as most SDs are, a trimaran. Coupled with this is increased survivability and a lower draught. With multiple redundant systems and bulkheads, coupled with a large CIWS complement means that it takes a lot to disable the Vaul. The Vaul was commissioned years before the final design was completed, with comparisons being made with other SDs by other nations, and to allow for newer technology to be incorporated.

Armour and Defence
Triad armour is composed of three layers. The first is a self-healing layer, composed of a glue-like substance between two thin layers. When the substance comes into contact with air it begins to congeal and harden, forming a cover over the hole. This only works on smaller holes - missile damage is impossible to heal. The second layer is a titanium-aluminium alloy to provide torsional stiffness and some protection from bullets. The third layer is a carbon-silicon nano-mesh that will seriously slow down any bullets that penetrate the first two layers, preventing them from doing damage to internal mechanics. The armour is roughly 10kg per Metre square.

The PDCS system gives a very good chance for the vehicle using it to be able to avoid the majority of enemy missiles that may be fired at it. Using a small launcher, each decoy has the same IR signature as the vehicle, as well as creating a RCS almost the same as that of the vehicle. They also emit the same sort of sound as the vehicle to prevent audible detection (mainly in ships), and have a small radar jammer equipped.

The EMPPS uses various detectors to discover incoming EMPs and then deactivates electronic systems onboard the ship to minimise electrical surges. It also exchanges traditional wires for fibre-optical wires, which cannot let electricity surge along them. There are also electro-magnets incorporated into the skin of the ship that activate to create an electric field around the ship of different frequencies and types, reducing that amount of EMP that can pass through, and therefore the amount of damage received. There are also capacitors stored on various parts of the circuitry that are designed to absorb the harmful electronic surges.

The Mist system uses high-frequency generators on the side of the ship. These excite the molecules in the air so that light coming from the sky is refracted so that it is projected horizontally. This creates images of the sky where the ship should be, but the brain perceives it as water, and so the ship is undetected by visual systems.

The SAP system detects incoming sonar pulses, and after absorbing as much of the energy of the signal as it can, it sends an anti-phase pulse back, severely distorting if not negating the signal. In addition, the plates can subtly change the sonar pulse to change the characteristics of it to make it seem there is something else there entirely. The plates can also send an extremely high pitched, and loud sonar pulse to make the enemy sonar operator shut down the system in order to save it, and himself.

Using FEDs rather than LCDs, the FEDOSS uses less power and has a much better contrast and brightness than LCDs. Basically a CRT, but with the thickness of and LCD screen, it uses carbon nanotubes as the electron emitters to light up the phosphorus surface. This allows for a much better visual stealth system than LCD systems, and runs at a lower power. Because of the multitude of 'electron guns' in the form of the nanotubes, hits by machine gun fire will not adversely affect the running of the system.

Electronic systems
A generation ahead of the old CACS, the APS will utilize all onboard systems to control the vehicle with no human intervention. It creates a battlefield-wide map using the systems from its own vehicle, and others - a virtual battlefield, that commanders can access to control their forces. This allows it to prioritize its own needs and any viable targets, and then carry them out. Some would say that the system wouldn't have the creativity of human pilots, but when your pilot has blacked out, or your low on pilots, its very useful - especially when it comes with a database of maneuvers it could take based on the current situation. It can communicate with every single APS unit in the world, and send this information back to HQ, allowing a world view to be generated, as well as allowing other APS units to use the information.

The Vaul is equipped with the PHBVS. This is the radar part of the vehicle, cycling its frequency hundreds of times a second in an attempt to confuse enemy stealth measures. It also incorporates various other detection systems such as IR, UV and more. This system also gathers data about the surroundings, as well as enemy and friendly vehicles. This allows the APS to work to its best, and gives a better idea of the surroundings. The system can track around 30 vehicles, though with linkage to other PHBVS, many more can be shown. This is especially important as this includes a holographic imaging system to show the user the battlefield, including structures of note, enemy and friendly vehicles, plus any other important information. Using the APS, details from other PHBVS users can create a much larger picture of the battlefield, and combining several users at once, each using a different frequency for their radar, means that conventional active stealth measures are pretty much useless. Again, the radar uses several waves in each 'pulse' where many of the waves cancel each other out in the atmosphere. For naval units, this system includes a sonar array, and a system that speeds up sounds to determine if they are natural, or man-made in origin.

Archangel detects incoming radar waves and compares them with the current atmospheric conditions. It then relays the resultant waves back to the source, defeating the radar. However large numbers of radar sites will reduce the impact this has significantly. However, the system can also be used to increase the number of radar 'hits', either giving the enemy incorrect data, or swarming the radar screens so that they cannot be read, or even in extreme cases, destroy the radar set altogether. The system also includes IR filters on the engine exhausts, plus pipes that leak the heat to other parts of the aircraft to confuse incoming missiles. This can also be linked with the PDCS so that the heat is concentrated at the engine at the time of release, then being spread over the entire aircraft in order to reduce the IR signature of the engine. A sound deadining system, similar in generation to the radar cancellation is also included, though the effectiveness of this is not as important as that of the radar cancellation.

Weapons
The ETC and railgun weapons are one of the main sources of firepower on the Vaul. There are also other secondary weapon systems, detailed below:

MTG-01 CIWS
This is a machine gun that has a 20mm calibre. It uses semi-guided ammunition, the details of which were first obtained from Kotterdam, and then modified by MierTech. Using four small electronic ‘muscles’ in the bullet, they receive information from the host vehicle and then activate the muscles accordingly in order to achieve a change of direction. This isn’t exactly homing, as the bullets have only a limited capacity to turn, but it can make the difference between a hit and a near miss. It has a ROF of around 200 rpm, and the bullets achieve speeds of up to 1,600m/s.

MTM-12 cruise missile
This missile was design to grant ships and ground vehicles a long strike missile that could deal a large amount to damage to the target, accurately. Though the MTM-02 and MTM-07 were available, the introduction of the MTM-10 and MTM-11 meant that systems were available that had much better systems on board. Using the modified PHBVS from the aforementioned missiles, the Revenge is able to accurately hit its target from as far away as 2,500km. Travelling at Mach 3, this missile can get into range to detonate before most systems can even arrange some defence.

MTM-06 torpedo
Utilizing supercavitation, this torpedo can reach targets extremely quickly. The trade off for this, is that it is so noisy that all sonar equipped vessels will know the location of the user. When a quick kill is needed, these are excellent choices.

MTM-11 SRAAM
Like the Swift LRAAM, the Oppressor was designed with the Mephistos in mind. It also has a RAMjet, though for the shorter ranges this is designed for, it 'only' has a speed of Mach 4. Again a modified PHBVS link is used to target and track the enemy, with a small IR tracker in case the PHBVS link is lost. Again, constant comparisons are made to ensure that the target, and not the countermeasures are hit. This missile has a range of 40km.

Why don't you register at Lineartinc (http://s13.invisionfree.com/LineartInc/index.php?act=idx)? Ask for someone to draw your SD (a good artist would be Alidor).

Maybe. I just prefer 3D pictures to line drawings. Maybe I'll get someone to do them while I wait for someone else to make 3D pictures.
