Gordon Lew was eager to reestablish contacts with the outside world. And, being an active person, he decided to take it upon himself to make the needed diplomatic measures to ensure Upper Xen's continued survival.

In this case, it began with an old friend, the superpower of the Khaifah Al Musulmeen, with which this message was sent:

TO: Sultan Suleiman Al Bashir II
FROM: President Gordon Lew, Upper Xen

The nations of Upper Xen and the Khaifah Al Musulmeen have shared a strong history, much of it illustrious. Xenizen isolationism nearly killed it, but now, I am ready to ensure that our two nations can become allies once more. To that end, I was wondering if I could come over and talk a few things over with you concerning this relationship.

Gordon listened and could pick up what he said; like many Chinese, he knew both Mandarin and Cantonese, though Cantonese was his best language, and he knew US English, flavored with a Southern accent.

He replied in Mandarin, shaking the Sultan's hand before bowing, "And it is an honor to meet you too, your Highness. I have heard many things about the great Sultan of the Khaifah Al Musulmeen, all good, not to worry."

"So how was your trip and how was the tour of Istanbul?" ask the Sultan in British English

Gordon then said, in Southern accented US English, "It went just fine, thank you. The city itself is impressive, ancient, and most beautiful....it has a certain quality to it, the surroundings, the clime, the people, but it all seems to impart a wonderful atmosphere. Not to mention, the sight of the Hagia Sophia for the first time outside of my National Geographics is astoundingly wonderful."

He then chuckled, and said, "You'll have to excuse the sentiments, but I am in a good mood right now." Noticing the Sultan's British-styled English, he then said, "I must say, your command of English is excellent, and certainly derived from British sources....did you study in Britain?"

Gordon said, fascinated, "Interesting....well, we teach American English, its not one for purity, but it works. I myself learned as a young boy, from a private tutor who was Virginian and my family's occasional journeys to other lands; we were businessmen and spent time in the West. Our people, at least in South China, also speak English with a kind of Southern Accent in general; we're not sure how that came about, but we say American traders did it."
