Azaha

The land in which the Azahan inhabitted is a harsh land. Cold cruel winds blowing endlessly, mountains of snow and ice are constantly about. The entire island in which the imperials of Azaha inhabitted is a frozen wasteland. Why would Azahans settle here? What they lack in agriculture and population, they make up for with the raw materials they are able to extract. Deep down beneath the snow, frozen ground, and permafrost lays rich mineral deposits. Why, what a heaven for miners and mining companies. Wrong, the sheer amount of ice and frozen ground makes most of these minerals nearly impossible to mine from the surface.
That is why the "Undercities" were established. These are good-sized towns and cities under the crust of the island. From there, they are able to mine the minerals from a horizontal angle, rather than a nearly impossible vertical angle. By no means are they self-sufficient. Without a constant supply of good, and fresh air, the peoples within these underground cities would die within the matter of days, due to air poisoning and thirst. They are a big gamble for the colony to make a profit, but without this singular source of export, the colony would be worthless.
On the topside of island, very few places of port are accessable. To the far north, a constant layer of thick ice holds dominence, preventing most ships from coming in from the north. Only the migtiest and studiest of ice-breakers can reach these far reccesses of the landmass. In the south, sheer cliffs hold domain. There are only three public ports availible for trade and civilians. The other three are reserved specifically for military use, and are heavily defended, mines, costal guns, and small defense fleets make sure of that.
On the cliffs and inland, numerous anti-air batteries have been placed, not an overwhelming number, but enough to repel the smallest of bomber flights. The real key to the defense of the island is nature herself. The sheer cliffs make it extremely hard to land troops, as it must be done through the north through thick ice, or in the south by the few open ports there are. The skies themselves lend aid. Eleven months out of the year, there is a howling wind that blows across the island. Aircraft can fly through it yes, but doing it for a long duration would be suicide.
All in all, the island is a pitiful excuse of an island, only sustained by the meager mining profit it brings in. Population is low, military presense is at a mediocre level, and the place is a hell-hole.
