OOC Discussion: NS Technological Encyclopedia

Alright, I have server space that I don't really use anymore [just for W@W that is dying down anyways] and there's a general problem with out of character and people's technology, and taking an example from the NS Wiki, I was wondering if anybody would be interested in a Wiki purely meant for technology on nationstates?

Of course, me knowing nothing about Wiki, php and how to prepare it all, could use a little help from experienced Wikiers, and I would be glad to give adminship access to the Wiki [if that's possible], and of course a large string of moderators that know what they're doing on Wiki.

Regardless, what should be focused on is whether people would use it or not. Would you guys?

OOC: If this idea ever gets into action, then I'll have a whole vault of documents to upload... :p

I don't think a separate Wiki is needed just for NS technology. I think there can be a technology component included in the current NS Wiki.

There is a hardware section, but this would include more than just hardware. It would include information on the technology - it would sorta be a Wikipedia and the Hardware section put together. And it would most likely get more technology than the NS Wiki because I think most people use it for other things, like me - I use it for my factbook and my sports teams, amongst dozens of other aticles I have, and those I plan to make.

Maybe a military OOB and TO&E section as well?

Mac:

Here you go:

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki

Go to the download section and download 1.5.2. tar.gz file. Use 7-Zip to open it (free). Then follow the documentations provided and set it up. :)

If this gets off the ground, I would be willing to take part in it and help you out. :)

Yea, I have it downloaded [I used it for the WorldWarWiki], I just don't have a program to open .tar files.

Of course; we can do anything - I just need to find people willing to help, that know what they're doing. :p

Here's a site:

http://www.7-zip.org/

Download it and open the file with it. Hope that helps.

I'd use it, but I don't see why you couldn't just add the info to the current NSWiki.

I found that in download.com, it sucked <.<

--------

CA: Well, it's just a matter of organization and the fact that this is specifically for technological reasons, and most likely than not there will be more hardware on this than on NSWiki, and there would information on technology, which NSWiki doesn't have.

NSWiki is my favourite site after NS - I spend as much time on there looking at stuff than I do here. It's just a matter of how specific things get, and how this would be only for technology.

7-Zip works awesome for me. I don't know why it wouldn't for you.

Alright, it's up at http://techwiki.modernwarstudies.net ... now, I have to either get someone to do the interface, or I have to learn how to do it myself [which might take a while].

If you want I can help you out with the interface. Let me just read the document they supplied. ;)

Looks good Mac, and the technolgy parts is where we can put units? Or is that the hardware part? :)

I'm guessing that the Tech part is where to put your technologies (like my ramfan jet engine) while hardware is where you put your units.

Hey, Mac do you need me to help you anywhere like make those empty links have somewhere to go?

Where's the Tech board or do you mean NS Draftroom?

EDIT: I registered up a Wiki account.

The latter, but screw it, I'll leave a comment on your talk page...if you're the 2nd user on there. [on the Wiki]

I think I am. My internal number is 3 but I'm not sure if that corisponds with my registration number.

Well, I know very little about NS tech. But if it takes off, you might consider asking Goober to set up an interwiki link, as he did for Europe's wiki. (That's just a suggestion for the future, mind.) Good luck, in any case.
Gruenberg

Oh, and a suggestion. Rip the code of all the meta pages (POV policy, featuring articles, etc., over from NSwiki, or really any wiki [although clearly NSwiki is more suited to your needs]).

Admittently, I ripped the code for the main page, and I have to thank Goob for that, since he put all the hardwork in.

Well, ok, but NSwiki content is released under GFDL, so it doesn't really matter. Are you going to set TechWiki up under a GFDL?

Dang essay on Ciaus Marius and my procrastination.

Yea, I did an English essay while installing the Wiki - tomorrow I have to finish a paper on Pol Pot, and then hell week is over until my next research paper is due.

Again, freakin' nice job. I couldn't add the copyright right under the image because I don't want to mess up the php [seeing as I know nothing about it], so I added it next to the general site's copyright, down below.
