ooc: I will start well in keeping with Russian history but I hope to send my Empire on an alternate route that will lead to a much more powerful and modern nation, also I've decided to render the last two or three years null, as MT really didn't know what he was talking about. Anyone who wants alliances, trade deals etc. will have to re-apply sorry about this but I think it's for the best, by my sources my current leader would be the Empress Catherine II, if anything I post is incorrect or needs tweaking please tell me and I'll try my best to adapt it.
Sorry for the tiny post but right now I'm still gathering information but I thought it best to put something in, I would be grateful is someone would help me by supplying some links with information on the major political figures and military numbers I currently have.

Peter III has reletively recently been overthrown and Catherine II has been crowned Empress of all Russia and she has high hopes for a newer, vaster and more powerful Russia.
For now many internal political reforms are underway with the aim of bringing new stability to Russia herself, these include an increase in education for the middle and upper classes and the writing of new laws as well as the modernisation of Russian industry and agriculture, the latter will however take many years to fully implement.

I have a couple of books about old Soviet political thinking, with emphasis on the areas you have discussed, also with some information on the old charismatic leaders. If you'd like more information on specific issues, reply here, telegram Bynzekistan (http://www.nationstates.net/bynzekistan) or email me (mailto:binnsy326@hotmail.com). The wiki pages on Russia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia), the History of the Soviet Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Soviet_Union_%281985-1991%29) and the Russian Revolution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_revolution) may also be of help.

OOC: Perhaps I should of said that I needed late 18th century information, my mistake, I still would like better information as my current numbers are mainly rounded estimates I have gathered from a fair few different sources, if my numbers are too unreasonable then I would be willing to negotiate them.

Russian Land based Military Strength
(work in progress, subject to review)
Standing infantry 205,000.
Standing cavalry 70,000.
Guns/ Artilery 220

Reserve troops (trained but not mobilised)
Reserve infantry 40,000
Reserve cavalry 5,000

The Russian Army, (names of forces)
The Russian Infantry is a host of formidable size, full of strong men drawn from the peasant and serf classes. In many confrontations it has been the lack of skill within the command structure rather than the will of the men involved that has caused defeat and this is true within the Russian army more than any other, currently Austrain officers and men are helping to train up Russian soldiers and officers so the Russian army become more efficient, more organised and more competant.

(OOC note: most of the information here is backed by some factual information but in some cases I have made things up, for instance the names of army commanders were not easy to find so I made them up, and actual formations and numbers are not Russian, such as the 4000 man battalion, But I did this so I could create a better example of organisation, also Russian divisions were usually named after their commanding officer or the area from which they come from.

The Imperial Grenadier Division (Irregular), the only division made up of entirely Grenadiers, it is a mass of experienced battle hardened soldiers very effective for seige operations and a powerful force on the field.

4th Latvian Battalion
5th West Russian Battalion
Co. General Domitav

Border Guard Division (Regular) This unit has the responsibility of guarding the European border from incursion, it has more light infantry than normal, having an entire battalion dedicated to skirmishing and fast-moving infantry while the other battalions lack light infantry skirmishers. (900 musketeers, 100 grenadiers) rather than the standard set up, it is rarely deployed outside Russian borders.

5000 Jager Light Infantry (5 brigades)
Co. Lieutenant Buvai Elnovich

The smallest measure of men is simply a regiment, this is 100 infantry, usually under the command of a Sergeant or Captain.
A battalion is the common measure of men and a single battalion of infantry numbers 4000 men, each of these can be divided into 4 brigades of 1000 men, a full division of men is the largest named body of men (besides "The Army" which would be my current standing military force or "A Army" which is a mass of men including Cavalry, Infantry and Artillery). A division consists of five battalions of infantry or 20 000 men.
The average regiment consists of 800 musketeers, 100 grenadiers and 100 skirmishers, however there are 'irregulars' that are regiments that are either balanced in a different way or consist of different types of infantry these are included in a division but it would be considered an "irregular division" for example it might have extra grenadiers or skirmishers.
Cavalry are dived into bridades of 1000 each of which can be divided into squadrons of 100.
Artillery are divided into groups of twenty cannon, this is referred to as a cannon regiment.

The Russian Infantry divisions combined equal some 200 000 men standing army, it is possible this number may be exceeded, but by an unknown amount, there are of course uncounted men who serve in garrisons and who are not called up for active duty in a mobile army, perhaps an extra 50 000 men could be called up but that would be the maximum without endangering internal security and ignoring the massive cost of training and equipping as well as supplying.

Sweden wishes to know what claim, if any, Russia has on our territory of Finland? We are willing to drop our previous claims on Estonia and Lithuania if Russia withdraws her (ooc: historically accurate) claim on our Finnish possesions.

King Karl X

This indeed seems a fair proposal and I will formally renounce my claim to the territory of Finland, in return I expect you to hold to your part of the deal and renounce your claims to Estonia and Lithuania.

Regards

Empress Catherine II

Agreed, we hope that this will ensure peace between our countries over the years, especially with the evil Catholic Alliance growing in power.

In secret, Sweden Privately informs Russia that there is much to gain from war with the Holy Roman Empire, who are about to be attacked by a Swedish-Dutch army of the Protestant Coalition. If Russia were to attack through an admittedly hostile Poland, Sweden would have no objections.

SECRET IC,As a country that follow the Eastern Orthodox style of the christian religion, we will not go to war in a matter of religion, however, our puppet king of Poland has just been overthrown and this displeases us, so we will go to war against that particular country simply to gain more territory and in doing so it will benefit you by tying up Polish forces.
Russia will begin to mobilise it's forces including a portion of the reserves.

(OOC: should I post my declaration of war somewhere else too?, maybe on the Polish thread?)

The Russian nobility are in a rare state of contentment as they have an Empress
who has made friends in many of their more powerful circles and they are taking a more active role in governing, this follows the fomer repression of the nobility in some of the previous Czar's (Tzar's) reigns, however a few nobles are beginning to voice their unhapiness about Russia position in foreign affairs.
The peasants are still in a minor state of unrest but are on the whole quite docile and show no immediate signs of causing trouble.
The army is beginning its mobilisation with logistics being organised and men are beginning to be called to duty.
The overall cost of the army will likely be quite significant and it is hoped that the Polish will provide a great deal of plunder to make up the cost.

A letter to Cathereine II.

We were most happy to hear that you will not join the protestant league or the catholic league, like most did. We also refused joining any of those, and so we have a proposal for you. We would like to crate a independant and neutral alliance, so we could help each other in case war broke out between the two alliances. We think we would both benefit from the proposal as influence of our empires would rise and we could tip the outcome of the war in any direction we want, on the side we would both benefit most...

We are also prepared to aid you in your war agains the Poles, mostly in the form of artilery and officers and experts that would help you re-organise and further improve your already magnificent army.

We would also ask you for political support against the French and that you would speak for us on their court.

Signed:
Empress Maria Theresia

A letter to Empress Maria Theresia

We would be glad to enter this alliance with you and also would welcome the support for our army as as great as we are in numbers and strength we have a lack of skill in the artillery and command structure.
I agree with your statements involving the power of a close friendship between our two great nation.
Indeed this alliance will give us a much stronger political position and you are also right in your view that we could tip the balance in favour of either of the other alliances, under this partnership we are sure to prosper and grow beyond our current glory.

I could probably speak with the French and I assume this matter concerns your interests in the Italian states, but what exactly would you ask me to talk with them about? Is it a compromise or a withdrawal or something else.
Bear in mind that whilst we may be able to put some political pressure on the French we can't force them to do anything.

Warm Regards, Catherine II, Empress of Russia

A letter to Cathrina II:

We are most greatfull that you accepted our offer. We will send some 100 offirces to help you orgainse your army.
But, as always in this cruel world, i have terible news. Prussia just marched into our country without any warning given or a declaration of war, such a tretcherus act! As we are already weakened from the war in Italy, we ask you most humbly to halp us whit any means possible!
The puny Prussians can't compare to the glory of our two nations united and if you would declyar war on them, they would probably retreat without a fight.
We ask you to consider our most humble request carefully.

Signed:
Empress Maria Theresia

A letter to Empress Maria Theresia

No matter, our army is currently large and powerful and well trained and better organised than it has ever been due to the last few months of reform, don't worry about sending your officers right now as you probably need them more, we just wanted to advance our knowledge of supply lines and how to maintain and protect them to the best degrees as well as some other less significant things like internal organisation, both of which have been improved greatly but we still think we have much to gain after this war is over if you would then send some officers to help train our officers. (OOC: historically the Russians were infamous for under-feeding their men and brutality in training).
We have over a hundred thousand men in our army and while we had hoped to move with a greater still army, we will just have to send a second smaller army later, for now we will begin to march toward the Prussians.

To Maria Theresia.

Unfortunatley it appear that I will have to topple Poland, before moving on to Prussia as the Polish lands rather significantly blocking my pasage and I would rather to have a hostile army at my back, maybe you should call for Swedish aid against Prussia while I fight and Poles? the Swedes would only need to tie up Polish forces so the Prussians would be forced to call back some of their army leaving them with less to assault you with, once I have dealt with the Polish I should be able to send troops against Prussia.
I pray that fortune will find you with favour.

To Catherine II. :

We are most greatfull and wish you luck with the poles. We agree in sending you officers after the war, as we also need theim in this awfull times.
The germans did us a great favour and blocked the Prussian army. When you finish of Poland, we will crush Prussia together and devide its welth and teritory.

Letter addressed to Maria Theresia

It is good to have some good fortune, in what looked to be a grim hour but that seems to have passed for a moment. I don't think the Poles will be able to match my armies might without a lot of luck and although the French are closer to your numbers I expect that they won't be able to match you and your allies strength for long without causing economic meltdown.
I wish you luck in Italy and on your homefront politically.
