Background With several ships performing the role of command flagships of Sarzonian Fleets, Squadrons, or Carrier Action Groups, engineers at the Portland Iron Works and officials at the Incorporated Sarzonian Navy quickly realised the logistical problems that having station flagships of different classes and weapon platforms presented. The influx of several classes of so-called pocket superdreadnoughts that followed Sarzonia's commissioning of the Independence class superdreadnought, itself an evolution of the joint Praeto-Sarzonian Freedom-class design, forced Sarzonian engineers to design a warship that would allow it to regain the lead the Independence class once gave it in the niche role of pocket SD. In addition, new weapons sytems being employed by Sarzonian and rival navies also pushed the development of a brand new naval platform along the lines of the pocket SD. The first all new superdreadnought design conceived by the Portland Iron Works in many years is the new Avenger-class pocket SD.

The fall of the onetime Sarzonian ally Hogsweat due to circumstances that were believed to be a self-defence grid gone haywire but were never determined to be a self-inflicted accident led the PIW to break from its normal naming convention of choosing a name related to principles the Incorporated Sarzonian Government holds dear; choosing instead a name that suggests military power. While further investigation suggests that the destruction of Hogsweat was indeed due to a catastrophic error in the national defence grid, the name was retained.

Armament In Sarzonian naval practice, the Mark 71 naval gun has been adopted after an agreement with the Dat Pizdy Corporation of Soviet Bloc. It increases rate of fire, range, and kinetic properties of ordnance above and beyond a ETC gun of the same calibre. Thus, the domestic version of the Avenger carries four triple turrets of 762 mm (30 inch) Mark 71 naval guns as its primary armament. While they are fewer in number than the total number of guns of most SDs, their size and killing power allow the Avenger to have nearly unparalleled killing power in comparison to other ships of its class. In fact, the calibre hearkens back to the origins of the pocket SD, the Freedom class to which this ship owes its lineage. The export version retains the ETC naval gun in three triple turrets, providing a still-devastating weapons outlay.

The secondary armament for the export version includes 12 203 mm (8 inch) naval railguns, ideal for coastal bombardment and for engaging fortified positions from distance. Also included are 12 90 mm ETC guns, used to engage fastships and other smaller craft, nearly 1,200 Mark 136 VLS tubes capable of launching the Scourge and Scorcher large antiship missiles that are a mainstay in the ISN. Also included in the export version is six torpedo tubes capable of firing 650 mm Bayonet heavy torpedoes, 32 Rattlesnake CIWS suites, and a dozen 35 mm supercavitating guns known as 'underwater CIWS'.

Aircraft The next generation of Sarzonian aircraft have also required the ISN to adapt to its new outlays, and they have incorporated the new designs into the Avenger. Up to 48 SZ-21 'Coronet' air superiority fighters and 36 'Valkyrie' strike fighters can be launched from the two flight decks along the outriggers. The export version can also launch eight SZ-15 'Dragon' ASW helicopters. Of course, any adjustment to those figures can depend upon a customer's naval doctrine or power projection needs.

Purchase Policies Due to the exclusive nature of the agreement between Dat Pizdy Corporation and the Portland Iron Works, the domestic version is not available to customers. Purchases of the Avenger are subject to an extensive background check and the Portland Iron Works reserves the right to limit or deny purchases to any nation for any reason. In addition, production rights for this design are not available.

[Okay, what niche role does the Pocket SD fill that can't be filled by a regular SD? And what's so "pocket" about it, these thing are bigger than every ship in my navy save the Gehenna class.]

OOC: It fills a niche in my navy in the sense that I use pocket SDs (like the Independence and Brandywine) as flagships on smaller, more mobile Carrier Action Groups. The regular SDs like your Gehenna or my Vigilant are flagships of the bigger Fleets and Fleet Groups.

And it's a "pocket SD" in comparison to the Doujin because it's smaller, lighter (IIRC), has a smaller aircraft wing, and has fewer main guns.

[Okay, I see your reasoning, at least about their niche role. However, the Doujin/Gehenna class isn't the norm, AFAIK, for SD size. The Halcyon class is slightly more numerous and weighs in at a little lower than 3/4 of a megaton. Most of my battlewagons are the 340kton Fenris class DNs.]

When Prae and I designed the Freedom, no one else was building "pocket SDs." It was still the only one AFAIK when I designed the Independence. Sometime after that, the pocket SD seemed to become the popular design.

Hmmm...I'll take 3 of the buggers.

$675,000,000,000 wired upon completion.

We'll be providing our own aircraft, thank you, how much is it without the aircraft complement?

OOC: Order confirmed. Sorry I didn't write anything IC, but I just wrote a massive confirmation post on the PIW site. I'd be willing to take off $10 million each for aircraft, though I usually don't provide aircraft with ship designs. That just gives you an idea of what kind of aircraft can fit on the Avenger.
