A history of the Imperium
The Holy Imperium of Banduria was first colonized in 1546 on a large island somewhere in the northern Pacific Ocean. While a native civilization had existed there previously and lived peacefully, farming the land, the colonists had little concern for them, killing off the vast majority and using the rest as slaves. The Imperium itself was proclaimed on May 6, 1641, when the first Emperor crowned himself ruler of the island and began the expansion into the mountainous interior. Originally the Imperium occupied only the southern peninsula, but it quickly grew to include, eventually, the whole island of Banduria.
The Imperium's history has been peaceful. With the infamously strong military, few have ever attempted to invade, and the Imperium rarely involved itself in international wars, except when its allies were attacked or to protect a smaller nation. Nevertheless, the military gets plenty of practice quashing revolts by small minorities, which have grown less and less frequent towards the present day as more such minorities are forced into camps or the Fanatics (see below).
All invasions ever attempted upon the Imperium have been repulsed, generally with heavy casualties upon the enemy and a retaliation in kind from one of the large carrier battle groups in the vicinity of the nation. In fact—due to its care not to mix in affairs over its head—the Imperium has never lost a war, even against nations of a larger size.
Military Details
The Imperial Army
The Imperial Army encompasses ground forces, navy, air force, special forces, and all military elements designed for offensive operations. While in overall personnel numbers it is somewhat smaller than the Imperial Guard, it makes up by the presence of the navy and naval aircraft (the Imperial Air Force plays a lesser role in this).
The Imperial Army's vanguard forces are known as Fanatics, drug-fueled maniacs who continue to fight on even in the most horrible of conditions, devoted unflinchingly to the Imperium and willing to give their lives for it. The enslaved prisoners of war and dissenters against the Imperium are thrown into the Fanatics, along with criminals and other untrained soldiers. They are given some armor and weapons and expected solely to die so the trained soldiers—the Legions—can take over the battlefield and win the day. The Legions make up the mainstay of the army, numerically larger than any other part of this army, well-disciplined and ready to take on any enemy forces that have not been sufficiently unnerved by the presence of the Fanatics. The number of Fanatics varies from time to time, depending on how many criminals, dissenters, etc. there are at any given time. There are 16 Legions, each containing 100,000 men, divided into 4 divisions each.
Total: 1,600,000 Legionnaires, 500,000-2,000,000 Fanatics; 2,700,000 noncombatant.
The Imperial Navy is one of the best-equipped in the region and of a fairly large size, with more than two thousand combat ships. While most of the Navy remains in Banduria's ports during periods of inactivity, carrier battle groups and smaller fleets around the world can reach many countries within a few hours, holding the battle until the rest of the Navy can catch up. The Imperial navy contains a large number of ships equipped with guided missiles, some with over 100 each; this helps prevent attacks from air or sea, although the 12 supercarriers launching a total of 6000 aircraft into the air usually also help prevent this. In addition, the Imperium's vast submarine fleet—with well over half the strength of the surface navy, at over 1000 submarines—is yet another vehicle for an effective strike at another nation.
Total: Over 2,000 combat ships (breakdown coming later); over 1,000 submarines; 6,000 naval aircraft
Total personnel: 620,000 combatant; 1,500,000 noncombatant
The Imperial Air Force is somewhat lacking where the Navy is prominent. However, in terms of equipment it certainly makes up for numbers. The primary fighter base consists of the F-24 "Wyvern" fighters, a symbol of fear and destruction wherever they go. While they are not particularly numerous (620 active, an additional 120 inactive), their speed, maneuverability, and heavy missile fire marks them as dangerous opponents on a battlefield. Bomber bases and multirole fighters are equally strong, although rarely used in offensive operations due to the heavy guided missile fire of ships themselves towards land-based targets.
Total: 1,600 combat planes, 1,200 attack helicopters
Total personnel: 80,000 combatant; 425,000 noncombatant
Total Personnel of the Imperial Army: 2,785,000-4,285,000 combatant; 4,635,000 noncombatant (total: 7,420,000-8,920,000)
The Imperial Guard
The Imperial Guard comprises primarily ground forces and defenses. Unlike the Imperial Army, which is designed for offensive and invasion operations, the Guard is primarily reserved for defending the Imperium, which they do with vigor and enthusiasm. Manning the army are first the Imperial Guard Legions, the finest soldiers in Banduria. There are 10 legions of these, each containing 100,000 troops.
In addition to these professional soldiers are the reservists, numbering over 20 million. The Reservists, or the Second Hope, are the young men and women who trained to be soldiers but never were chosen to join the Legions or sunk low enough to become Fanatics. In a time of war, they are called forth and given weapons, if they do not have them already—gun ownership is encouraged—and sent off to defend the borders. The Reservists are rarely called in, but when they are they fight their hardest, showing that even though their training may not have been perfect, they are still willing to give their lives for their country.
Finally, there is the last possibility if all else seems lost: the draft. Nearly 200 million people throughout the Holy Imperium are of eligible age and fitness to join the Army. Discounting those working for the various Corporations or serving already, there are still at this time nearly 70 million citizens who can be called up to take up arms and defend Banduria from invaders. No draft has been called for more than 70 years, however.
Total Personnel of the Imperial Guard: 1,000,000 constant combatant; 2,400,000 constant noncombatant. In times of direst need, this can extend to up to 35,000,000 combatant, 65,000,000 noncombatant.
The Government of the Imperium
For untold ages the Imperium of Banduria has been ruled by a sole Emperor, a hereditary dictator of sorts, revered as of near-godlike status. There have been only three major dynasties in the history of Banduria, one of them lasting only 26 years, due to the stability maintained by the large and powerful army. The Emperor holds sole—and absolute—power, ruling his citizens however he wishes. The once-powerful Senate has been reduced to simply advising the Emperor, and frequently it is not even allowed to do that.
However, there is something else that checks the Emperor's power: the corporations. Many of these, especially Conquest Industries, Inc. and the Alder-Samson Group, run medium-sized to large private armies which can swell the Imperial Army's numbers in an invasion to over 16 million. In addition, the corporations frequently donate a good deal of money to the Imperium in exchange for certain freedoms and tax breaks. However, if the Emperor chooses policies that displease the corporations, they may withdraw their funding or even turn on the Imperium itself, which would be a catastrophe to Banduria's economy and the Emperor's support. Thus, the Emperor must always take care to remain on the good side of the corporate interests.
In recent years the Imperium and the corporations have struck a deal: The Imperium will provide corporate welfare, tax breaks, and so on to businesses. In return, the corporations will stand by the Imperium, help defend it, donate funds, etc. This ensures that nobody goes home unhappy, except for perhaps the people, who are anyway brainwashed into believing in the divine right of the Emperor. All knowledge of the corporate deal is, understandably, covered up.
Conquest Industries, Inc.
Conquest Industries, Inc. started out with the merger of two military arms manufacturing companies in 1975. However, it quickly developed into a world power in and of itself, notorious for buying out or forcibly taking over other companies with the very equipment it manufactured. Within a few years, Conquest Industries, Inc. had a medium-sized private army of about 200,000 well-trained troops, which were used to take over companies that refused to be bought out.
Conquest Industries, Inc.'s troops and equipment have figured prominently in many of the last major wars; they generally bought out or took over the local infrastructure of nations, especially industries geared at military production such as arms manufacturing, uranium mining, or petroleum processing. These areas were generally held as colonies of Banduria, or Conquest Industries specifically. Eventually, with installments in more than 20 countries and a total military force of over 3 million trained soldiers guarding the "colonies", Conquest Industries ceased to be solely a Bandurian company, becoming very nearly its own country. However, due to the deal sealed between Conquest Industries and the Imperium, Banduria allowed Conquest Industries to expand to many countries unchecked, on the condition that half its products be shipped to the Imperium.
With Conquest Industries' monopoly on the Bandurian arms manufacturing industry, it produces a huge amount of weaponry available for war. Even the half of this amount sent to Banduria is enough to supply the whole of the Imperial Army and Guard. Of the remainder, 30% is sold to other countries, with the remaining 20% used to arm Conquest Industries, Inc. itself.
