Prime Minister Timothy Ell, in power since August 1996, is
to announce his resignation tomorrow morning,
according to numerous political and news blogs.

Blogs report that PM will resign tomorrow morning

TIMIOCATO (PNN) -- After nine-plus years of what many describe as "outstanding, mature leadership" from a "clear-headed young man", numerous blog media sources are claiming there is truth to the rumour that Prime Minister Timothy Ell will resign from his position. The sources report Signore Ell would not leave office for at least a month, giving his party, the Federation of Progressive Democrats, a chance to elect a new leader for the thusly impending federal election. It would also allow Ell the chance to end his tenure as leader of Pacitalia with one final official duty - the bilateral talks with Sarzonia as the two nations attempt to solve their differences.

Any credibility to this rumour has only been solidified by the fact that these blogs claim their original source is a highly-placed aide to the Prime Minister. The federal government has not released any statements, and is not explaining why Ell would resign, other than the only known explanation, which is to be with his wife as much as possible when their first child is born early next year.

Timothy Ell was first elected prime minister on 10th August 1996 with a comfortable majority, and earned majorities in the subsequent 2000 and 2004 federal elections, while watching his provincial FPD counterparts earn power in 14 of Pacitalia's 16 provinces. Ell is also most closely related with Pacitalia's emergence as an economic, diplomatic, military and cultural power, and with the lowering of federal income tax to zero. He also was in power during two wars, both of which were victories. Ell was 28 when he acceded the position, and if the rumours are proven true tomorrow, will resign at the age of 37.

Breaking News From PNN

Ell resigns, sets last day

I'm Simona Varonatta in Studio One. With the arrival of this morning comes the confirmation that Prime Minister Timothy Ell is resigning and will leave office on 18th December. Dr. Adrian Copilul-Minune will serve as Prime Minister pro tempore starting 27th December. We now go live to the press conference where Ell is answering questions, after announcing his intention to step down.

"...now, I am not being forced out. I am not leaving on bad terms with anyone in my cabinet, or anyone in my caucus. The fact of truth remains that, in hindsight, I really have done everything I set out to accomplish back in 1996. I have nothing more I feel I need to do, and I certainly don't want to become a lame duck prime minister. The last thing I want to do is resurrect voter apathy - we are a democracy. Without fresh blood, voters aren't going to care who wins. I've won comfortably in three straight elections, and people just aren't surprised when they see the FPD victorious."

(Manti Soratina-Murana, La Repubblica Oggia)
Signore Prime Minister, if you're not being forced out or leaving on bad terms, why are you resigning, besides the new addition to your family? Did it have something to do with the Sarzonian diplomatic meltdown?

"Of course not, Manti - it's not anything to do with that, at all. President Sarzo and I have been working very hard the last week to set these talks up and restore relations. We both note, with regret, that severing ties, albeit temporarily, was the wrong path to go down."

(Giancarlo Cialberto, PBC News)
What are your plans in private life?

"Well, I think a short retirement would be in order. Starr and I are going to stay out of the public eye for at least a year while we get used to the fact that we have a new little one to look after. After that, it'll be time to put some of these degrees I earned to use, eh?"

[ laughter ]

(Selena Giardino, PNN)
After serving the Pacitalian people for nine-plus years, are you going to, number one, find it difficult to say goodbye, and number two, find it odd not to be so involved in Pacitalian politics anymore?

[ Ell pauses, a little choked ]

"Of course I'll find it hard to say goodbye. I would never have taken this job if I didn't love my fellow countrymen. I will always be proud of what Pacitalians have accomplished and what we will accomplish as a nation. As for the second question, well... that's a hard one to answer. I suppose... I'm not done yet, but who can predict the future? I'd love to come back into politics - it's my passion... But I think it's definitely somebody else's turn to govern the country."

>>
--We're going to take you back now and show you the speech Ell made earlier this morning before the round of questions began.--
<<

"Good morning, esteemed members of the press corps, ladies and gentlemen. For some time now, I've been mulling over my accomplishments as the head of this nation. I have been in this position, as head of state and head of government, for nine fulfilling, hard-working years, and I know that what my government has done for this country has lifted Pacitalia from being a quiet state concerned about self-preservation, to becoming a nation that has added so many more levels of cultural, economic, diplomatic and military depth. In just nine years, this country has had its status elevated to become one of the premiere nations of this world. Many say that's my legacy, and I would love to end my tenure on that note.

"That being said, I don't want to become a lame duck. I don't want to be in power if I have nothing left to accomplish. I want to be around for the birth of my first child, and not tied up with other affairs. I feel it's time to let somebody else in who wants to benefit the country and further the country's growth and maturity. And thus, I tender my resignation as prime minister, and will set my last day in office as the 18th of December. My good friend, Dr. Copilul-Minune will, in accordance with the Carta Proposera di Libertà, assume interim prime ministership on the 27th, and Pacitalians will most likely head to the polls not long after.

"I thank the Pacitalian people for allowing me such a long tenure and mandate to govern, and I have always been honoured to serve as the leader of this great nation. Hopefully, my work here will always be remembered as being positive for the country, and that future leaders, and future generations will look back on this decade in our history as one of the better."

Democratic Capitalist Republic of Pacitalia

Signore Haffner -

Although our relations have never truly been friendly, I am honoured by your wisdom and your wonderful comments. The fact that you chose to send a message in Pacitalia's native language was even more uplifting for my office and I to read. Being first to respond to my resignation only further cements our belief that the Incorporated Government is truly committed to the restoration of relations, my last to-do as prime minister.

With your true and kind words, I'm sure this process will go smoothly. I am confident that what will probably be my last major official task pertaining to foreign policy will be a success, and that Pacitalians and Sarzonians can resume their long-standing friendship. For me, the attitudes of both our governments recently is a sign that the restoration of bilateral relations is no longer a question of "if", but a question of "when". And I sincerely hope that before 18th December, our plans will be most honourably accomplished.

You are welcome in Pacitalia any time you wish to visit, Mr Haffner. I know I have been quite untoward regarding my communications with you, but I would be honoured to "start fresh", as it were, and return to time when there were no enemies and there was no hatred between our two governments. I believe the first step is to repair my status with you, as a person.

The best of luck to you and your colleagues in future, sir.

Comatica's relationship with Pacitalia and yourself has benefited the people and government of Sarela Impereus in a way that shall not hasten to be lost. I bow to you and your acheivements while in office, and cannot convey exactly how much respect I bear towards you. We find that the leaving of such an honorable man to be heartbreaking to the political community and therefore saddening. We thank you for allowing both of our nations to further presue diplomatic relations with each other and provide leadership alongside Sarzonia for the alliance. We hope that this will not end your public service career and we hope that you will remain to be at least a commentor on the developing climate in the world. We thank you for everything you have done and you will never be forgotten. May god bless you and your people.

To: Dr. Timotaio Ell, MPP Prime Minister of Pacitalia

It is with regret that I hear of this decision, but I speak for all Voltaru when I congratulate you on your remarkable terms in office. Your leadership of Pacitalia served as a beacon that helped us to find and join the Woodstock Pact, and served as an international example of what true leadership is and what it can do for a country.

We thank you for everything you have done for the Pact, and for the international community. We wish you peace, happiness, and strength in the coming months, and hope that your political role in Pacitalia will someday be rekindled. Should you and your newly extended family ever find yourself this far south, our nation would be honored should you decide to visit.

OOC Note: Since I'm too lazy to do this ICly ;) I've extended Ell's term of office to end on Monday, 2 January, 2006. The FPD party echelons have 'decided' the leadership convention will take place on Tuesday the 3rd, so that's a good day to end his tenure. Also on the 3rd, Dr. Copilul-Minune will assume power for the interim. An election will most likely occur on 30th January.

Official Statement of the Grand Duchy of Hamptonshire and the Hamptonian League
Office of the Regent

The Government and People of the Grand Duchy of Hamptonshire and Her Protectorate Realms are deeply saddened by the resignation of Prime Minister The Prince Timothy Ell. We could further applaud the Prime Minister and sing his praises but, We fear, there is nothing new that could be said that hasn't been said by this Nation time and time again.

All Hamptonians wish The Prince the best of luck in all his current and future endeavors. Not so long ago our Nation saw the resignation of its own longstanding leader, a leader who made it his last act to restore relations with then-distant former friend. It is easy to preach strife and conflict; it is much harder to work for the cause of peace and harmony. It is no surprise then that the Prime Minister has chosen to take the path of difficulty and righteousness.

The Prince Timothy occupies a special and unique spot in the collective hearts and minds of all Hamptonians. We have given to The Prince nearly every honor and award that We are able to grant. He is the representation of all that is good and proper with Pacitalia. While the Grand Duchy's relationship with the Democratic Capitalist Republic is bigger than any one person or group of people, that will not dampen the sense of loss that We shall share with all Pacitalians when The Prince Timothy last graces the Federal Central Government's offices.

There is little more that this Nation and its People can do to honor Prime Minister Ell. We have but few honors left that do not grace the person of The Prince. There is, in fact, but one honor that has not been bestowed upon the Prime Minister. It was the wish of Grand Duke Reginald Leopold the Great that, when the time was right, The Prince would be invested in the Highest Order of Chivalry in the Hamptonian Realm. We, acting in accordance with the Last Will and Testament of Grand Duke Reginald Leopold the Great, do announce that His Highness The Right Honorable The Prince Signore Dr. Timotaio Fortanescu Amacano Jared Ell, MPP, Duke of Træhammer, Marquess of Upper Harbourd, Count of West Doheans, Viscount of the Outer Coasts, Baron of the Six Streams is hereby invited to be invested as the Thirty-Eighth Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Sacred Eagle. In the millennia of this Order's existence, it has been awarded on only thirty-seven previous occasions. This is Our humble last attempt to honor the accomplishments and life of this young and legendary world leader.

We have an additional honor to bestow, but it is not only for the Prime Minister. Earlier this morning the Royal Congress, by unanimous vote, declared The Democratic Capitalist Republic of Pacitalia to be a Brother Nation and Pacitalians to be one of the Brother Peoples. In the eyes, and hearts, of the People and Government of the Grand Duchy Pacitalia and Pacitalians are but Hamptonians by another name. No nation and no people outside of the Hamptonian League have been afforded this honor nor, with full due respect to all Hamptonian Allies, would any other nation or people be considered. When an officer of the Royal Armed Forces and member of the Federal Government takes their oath of office and pledges to "defend Hamptonshire and the Brother Peoples from all harm and malice", they will by extension be devoting their lives to the security and safety of Pacitalia.

His Royal Majesty Bernard III, Duke of Obsidia
Regent of the Grand Duchy of Hamptonshire

Pacitalian Prime Minister resigns

TIMIOCATO – Pacitalian Prime Minister Timothy Ell today announced that he would retire voluntarily as Prime Minister and leave Pacitalian politics. Dr. Copilul-Minune is set to be appointed as interim Prime Minister with the job of leading the country to early elections. Foreign and domestic leaders praised Ells leadership, but his resignation may spark a new and uncertain period in Pacitalian politics.

Timothy Ell was elected thrice as Prime Minister of Pacitalia, and he holds numerous prestigious foreign titles. He is credited with successful market reform of the Pacitalian economy and his nation’s emergency as a significant power in the world. In addition, he guided the power through two wars, turning the ambitious Prime Minister who was just 28 years young when he was swept to power into something of a father figure.

In a radio interview, Prime Minister Jan Willem Daatman praised Ell’s “years of great leadership, and the clarity of vision to deepen the economic and diplomatic ties with Knootoss.”, continuing that he would be missed and expressing hope that he would “have a great life outside of Pacitalian politics.” Daatman also expressed confidence that Knootian-Pacitalian relations would continue to be warm with Ell’s successor government. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence Femke Vologdov sent out a congratulatory telegram praising Ell and wishing him well. She also announced that Ell would be bestowed with the title of Knight in the Order of the Guinea Pig. Honorary membership of the Order of the Guinea Pig is Knootoss’ most prestigious civilian award.

Investors weren’t as optimistic, however, and concerns about the medium-term political stability of the Capitalist Republic depressed trading in Pacitalian stock and futures, driving down prices by an average of 2.4 percent.

Open Letter to the Prime Minister

It is with great sadness and heavy heart that I am compelled to write this letter, for the world must now witness the exit of my colleague and my friend, Dr. Timothy Ell, Prime Minister of Pacitalia, from the stage of international politics. I need not recount the ways in which the Prime Minister has distinguished both himself and his country, for many have done so far more eloquently than I could ever hope.

Although our friendship is more recent than those who have spoken before me, I can say without hesitation and with full conviction that the United Kingdom owes much to the Prime Minister and never before has His Majesty’s Government owed so much to a single individual not of Azazian birth. And so it is with great personal pleasure that I can announce to both my friend and to the world that upon the order of His Majesty King Michael I, Dr. Timothy Ell is to be accepted into the Most Noble Order of the Palm, the third highest order in the United Kingdom and highest available to a man neither of royal Azazian blood nor in the uniform of the Royal Armed Services, as a Knight Grand Commander.

And yet, while I and my fellow citizens may mourn the resignation of a great man, the United Kingdom awaits with great hope the successor of Prime Minister Ell, a man or woman who will have not just my personal hand of friendship, but that of the whole United Kingdom.

Sincerely,

Lord Alistair Tetley,
First Marquess of Salisbury,
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Private Letter, handwritten, delivered via Ambassador Newson

Well, chap, I must say that I am glad that we finally met back at the lovely dinner what seems like ages ago. Making your acquaintance and friendship has truly been one of the highpoints of not just my political career as premier, but also that of my personal life as it truly is difficult to meet and get to know men as honourable and genuine as yourself.

I’ll keep this brief, for I’m quite certain you’re receiving many similar letters of praise and farewell, but any time you should like to visit the UK, just ring me up and we can have a massive state dinner with formalities and pleasantries and royalty.

Or we’ll all retire to my estate in the mountains and keep it quite simple and laid back. Something PM’s aren’t too accustomed to these days I’m afraid.

Anyways, good luck, Tim. My regards to your wife and my blessings to your little one.

Take care, friend,

Alistair

Official Statement of the Prime-Executive Leadership
Office of the Prime Minister, Federal Central Government
Democratic Capitalist Republic of Pacitalia

Dear friends

The Citizens and Government of the Grand Duchy of Hamptonshire and Her Protectorate Realms;
Prime Minister Jan Willem Daatman and Foreign Minister Countess Femke Vologdov of Pereslavl, of the Dutch Democratic Republic of Knootoss and the Knootian Federation;
Impere Nelale Titao Celmaet of the Sarela Imperius ad Comatica;
Prime Minister Alistair Tetley of the United Kingdom of Azazia;
President Harsimran Mann of the Federal Sikh Republic of Space Union;
and last, but certainly not least, High Chancellor Xerco Longbottom, Premier of the High Order, of the Trenchant Order of The Voltarum

There are no words to express how truly, deeply humbled and honoured I am for the kind comments of everyone who has responded, and the decorations bestowed upon me in regards to my service as prime minister of Pacitalia for the last nine years and four months. I am profoundly enchanted and, honestly, pleasantly shocked by this substantial show of appreciation for me.

I have been but a humble servant of my country for nearly a decade. It is truly the best job I've known and arguably one of the best in the world, and I have been blessed to know many people over that time. Some come and go, but my true friends have stayed to bear witness to the coming of age of Pacitalia under the watch of my government. Still, it is the accomplishments in regards to multilateral friendship that I am probably most proud of in my time here. I will never forget the sacrifices made for this country by our allies, and will always appreciate the respect people had for us. Pacitalians truly are surprised and humbled by the kind words and thoughts people feel toward us.

To my friends in Hamptonshire, I cannot express how proud I am to know how dear we are to your hearts. Safely I can say the sentiments you have toward us are very easily returned, and that the bonds of Pacitalians and Hamptonians have only grown stronger thanks to this show of gratitude for our relationship. We are now, in the true sense of the word, family, and I am more than appreciative for this occurrence. Because of that, I have no trouble stating that any Hamptonian is welcome in my home, any time. I will spare no hospitality and never hesitate to share my home with a Hamptonian who so requires it. I am confident that the people I lead share the same feelings. May God and goodwill always be with the Grand Duchy and her Protectorate Realms, forever and ever.

Knootians and Pacitalians have also shared close ties, ties that have grown substantially stronger over the past ten years. This I am also profoundly grateful for. The people of the Democratic Capitalist Republic greatly admire citizens of the Dutch Democratic Republic and the Knootian Federation for their courage, their intelligence and their kindness and openness. Without nations like Knootoss, the world is worse off. It makes me even more proud to know we are one of the closer nations in the minds of the Knootians.

Comaticans are a different people entirely. Not because of what they are, or how they became who they are, but because of the bonds they have with us. The connection between Comaticans and Pacitalians only grew stronger at the Battle of Springbrook - nearly one year ago, and coincidentally, on the last day of my service as prime minister, we will remember those who sacrificed everything to protect the sacred nation and innocent people of Comatica from the evil insurgency that was the Anime Liberation Movement. It is in our blood, programmed within us, even, to come to the aid of the Comaticans. We are extremely proud and honoured to have served a purpose in Springbrook, and our fondness for Comaticans run deep. I have strong beliefs that the bonds between the Sacred Empire and the Democratic Capitalist Republic shall run deep for centuries, millenia, eons to come.

Azazians and Pacitalians have been friendly to each other for many years, but it was only under this administration and its wise counterpart under Prime Minister Tetley that the relationship between our two peoples grew stronger into a full friendship of allies. Pacitalians love Azazians, and always will. Not only are they courageous, they are honest and loyal, patriotic to the end. We respect them highly. I respect them highly. I hope our relationship as nations continues to develop, and that even after I leave office, Pacitalia and Azazia become well-known examples of what nations should be like.

To our venerable allies through the Woodstock Pact, that being the Federal Sikh Republic of Space Union and the Trenchant Order of The Voltarum, I have no words to describe how much I truly appreciate and value the kind words Mr Mann and Mr Longbottom have used to describe me. It is humbling to know that you feel Pacitalia is a pinnacle of human rights protection, a keystone of the Pact we share membership in. I have no qualms in calling both men my friends, and their peoples friends of my nation.

As for the honours offered to me by my dear friends and brothers in the Grand Duchy of Hamptonshire, the United Kingdom of Azazia and the Dutch Democratic Republic of Knootoss, I say this: being a modest man, I would be reluctant to be given so many honours. As I said, I am but a simple servant of my people. I am plainly satisfied that I accomplished everything I set out to do. If you will allow it, I would be honoured to accept all the personal honours provided, on behalf of the people I am so grateful to have been able to govern.

If you are all willing, it would also be an honour to host representatives of your nation for my farewell ceremonies, which shall take place on the 28th December. Remember that, although it is Christmas, it will still be warm. I see that warmth as a symbol of the love we all share for each other, and the benefits that love has given us as we ascend in stature and mutual respect.

Thank you all once again for your unbelievably kind words and your compassion. My respect for the world grows only greater with leaders like you.
