Manifest Destiny [Semi-Open]

Close to two and a half billion people rose every morning in the Imperial Commonwealth of Malkyer. The overwhelming majority of these lived in the Viceroyalty of North America. When compared to the open stretches of land in Australia, or the wide, grassy veldt of Southern Africa, the North American Viceroyalty was a paltry stretch of narrow land between the Pacific Ocean to the west and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in the east. Only in the north did the land open up, and there it opened to vast wilderness and frozen tundra. North America could not much longer support its growing population. Expansion was required.

Nations most commonly expand in three ways. The first and most effective is conquest. Following that, purchase. The Imperial Commonwealth had itself expanded over much territory with these methods. The third method was diabocal in its simplicity. Flood a region with settlers, and then demand a plebiscite in that region, which will likely vote to join the home country of the settlers.

Malkyer had set its eyes on four areas: Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. Colorado and New Mexico, being so close to the Commonwealth, already had significant populations of Malkyeri expatriates. While plebiscites may not yield union directly, they would certainly be significant enough to convince the governments of Colorado and New Mexico that it would only be a matter of time before they were annexed. Wyoming was, for the moment, too sparsely populated to reject a plebiscite, and the Malkyeri immigrant majority in the state considered it a province of the Commonwealth already.

Utah, on the other hand, was a problem. The Mormons were not generally accepting of Malkyeri immigrants, given the latter's notions that Mormonism was about as much a legitimate religion as voodoo. Given that the Mormon government controlled essentially all water and other resources, it was not difficult for them to exact harsh measures on any immigrants from their western neighbor.

Tensions increased between the Commonwealth and the Mormons over perceived violations of the Malkyeri immigrants' rights and blatant cultural imperialism, respectively. Tensions that further increased when the Royal Armored stations an armored cavalry division near the border with Nevada, and Utah called up militia to organize a defense...

(AP)-In a speech before a large crowd in Salt Lake City today, Utah's General Hiram Young made it explicity clear that the Republic of Deseret would not tolerate imperialism of any form by the Commonwealth, and also announced that any threat would be met with force.

"For years now we've watched the gentiles in Malkyer swallow up defenseless people all around the world. From lands far across the seas to right here in North America, those imperialists will not rest until all are subservient under their banner. We have watched Wyoming consumed in all but name. Colorado and New Mexico struggle to keep their autonomy in the face of wave after wave of immigration.

"My friends, I say that it stops now. If Deseret should become a battleground, then so be it, but we may die knowing that it is the battleground on which the armies of the Imperial Commonwealth will smash upon the rocks and bleed themselves to death.

"The Imperial Commonwealth forced our hand when they began flooding sovereign soil with their people. They forced our hand when they put soldiers on the border. Well, now we have moved of our own accord, and I dare the Malkyeri to take another step towards Deseret."

The speech ended amidst a cacophony of cheers, the cheers of people supremely confident in their goals and their God.

OOC: This is setting up for an RP about Malkyer's advances into the interior of the North American continent. Comments, both IC and OOC, are welcome, as is IC criticism, and limited or covert aid to the Mormons is also fine, provided that you let me know first via TG.

The Royal Army patrol stood still in the desert, not sure what to do. A group of about two dozen Mormons stood in a line directly in front of the patrolling soldiers. Their leader, a staff sergeant, shrugged. "I guess this is the border, then." A couple of soldiers laughed. The Mormons stood motionless.

They carried a varied assortment of weapons, ranging from hunting rifles to shotguns, pistols, even one light machine gun. Outnumbering the Royal soldiers more than two to one, the mood was tense. One of the soldiers fingered his rifle, nervous.

"Why are you here?"

The sergeant blinked, surprised by the question. "Patrol. Why are you here?"

The Mormon's face remained expressionless. "Making sure your 'patrol' doesn't cross into our land."

Rolling his eyes, the sergeant sighed. "Look, I don't want your land. It's a useless desert, you should just calm the--"

"Do not speak of Deseret like that, gentile." The sergeant looked taken aback. A somewhat religious Jew, he was not used to being called 'gentile.' He wasn't quite sure what to think, until he remembered that Mormons called everyone that.

One of the soldiers quickly raised his rifle. "Look, you polygamist fuckers, we--" Several things happened at once. The sergeant shouted for the trooper to shut his mouth, and a young Mormon, red-faced and angry, brought his rifle up and fired. The soldier was knocked off his feet, but the hunting rifle's bullet didn't penetrate his flak jacket.

"Holy hell," someone shouted, and things quite literally exploded. The steady crack of automatic rifle fire opened up as the Royal Army soldiers fell to the ground and ducked behind cover, shooting at the Mormons. The man with the light machine gun was the first to fall.

The Mormons fought back about as well as could be expected from untrained, armed civilians; they hid behind rocks and their fire was relatively accurate. The firefight last about twelve seconds before the Mormons still able to turned to run. All in all, ten Mormons had fallen, four of them dead and another two in need of quick treatment. Three Royal Army soldiers had been shot, though none had died and only one was seriously wounded.

As one of the soldiers radioed for a medevac and the others hurried to help the wounded, the sergeant stood over the body of a dead Mormon. "Shit..."

The final, stumbling efforts to maintain peace had failed. Upon the news of the Mormon deaths at the hands of Royal Army soldiers, the Republic of Deseret, as Utah was now styling itself, declared war on the Imperial Commonwealth of Malkyer. The Commonwealth did not respond in kind, but did order three divisions into the Republic to quash resistance.

It may have seemed suicide for Deseret to declare war on a nation hundreds of times their size, but the tiny republic had two advantages. First, the war was unpopular in Malkyer, and was viewed as an unnecessary imperialistic adventure, especially when other lands were much more receptive to the Commonwealth's overtures. Second, the Mormons were utterly confident that God would destroy the armies of the gentile Malkyeri before they had any chance of defeating the Republic.

In a few days, these confidences would be tested...

The 405th Bedou Mechanized Infantry Division cross the Utah-Nevada border at 0330. The objective was to get as far into Utah as possible before engaging the enemy, at which point the Bedou would hunker down and become the anvil for the hammer that was the 109th Armored Division, which would come over the border later tomorrow.

The 55th Airborne Division would drop in troops to secure rail junctions and seize some of the smaller towns this evening. Hopefully, the war would be quick and relatively bloodless.

Inside a Stryker LAV, one of the Bedou soldiers began to pray, more for the Mormons than for himself. Istighfar, I seek forgiveness from God, for my future sins...
