OOC: This is sort of a continuation of a thread I started last month that never really got off the ground, Evolution of the Sentinel II (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=448116).

***************

It had been many years since Project Black Sunrise began...years filled with anticipation and suspence.

The whole idea behind the new Project was to do the unthinkable: breed the Sentinels with the Freek civilian populace, and create a new race of warrior. They would not be as clean cut and robotic as the Sentinels, but instead would be a rough and gritty killing machine, died in the wool killers.

Sure the Sentinels had gained a reputation as one of the most destructive forces makind has ever seen, but Dreadfire wanted more. His Sentinels were experts at taking control of practically any battlefield, pillaging and razing entire cities, and butchering those that stood before them. But there was one difference....the Sentinels did it because all their life they were trained to do as they were told. They killed because it was their order to do so, for they had been raised to express and feel next to no emotion and follow the orders of their sadistic Warchiefs. Lord Dreadfire wanted soldiers that killed because they lusted for it, and after years of waiting the end result was ready.

These new warriors were raised the old fashioned way under ancient Freek morals and values, viewing those outside of Automagfreek as unworthy of life and lower than the most vile of vermin. The southern women that had been conscripted into the new breeding program were as rough and tough as they came, raising their new students of war to take personal pride and pleasure in the art of butchery. 'Wildmen' they were being called, for their long hair and beard growth game them an almost caveman like appearance, while their clothes and battle armor were decorated by the individual soldier.

The first detachment of Damien's new soldiers were ready for field testing, and no time was wasted. Word had reached the fiery Lord's ears of an insurrection on the small Freek colony of Pitoria, where news of a viral outbreak and mass hysteria began to circulate. The more Damien reviewed the various information at his disposal, the more he contemplated using his new 'toys' for the first time.

His mind had been made up. The first divison of his new soldiers, known as the 406th Infantry Legion, had been summoned to qwell the violence and contain the outbreak before things degenerated further. The operation was to be under the supervision of his son Azrael, who was to report to Damien the every move of the new soldiers, to which the young prince was happy to oblige.

Later that day Azrael's fleet took to the high seas, headed for the island colony of Pitoria. With his personal army of Sentinels acting as backup, he watched the movements of the new soldiers on board eagerly, anxious to see what these 'wildmen' could do. As his flagship, the Death Rattle continued on, Dreadfire sent an encrypted message to his son with a set of instructions and a warning....

Azrael, once you arrive at Pitoria you are to deploy the new weapons into the hostile areas personally, while your Sentinels are to contain the outbreak and assist our doctors in treating the sick. Those who are affected are to be contained so that they do not spread the disease any further, but I do not want you to use the new soldiers in any way for this.

I have seen them in training, and I fear that once you expose them to blood that they will simply not stop. I fear that once we take their leash off, it will be difficult to put it back on. Just....take extra care to prevent these soldiers from interacting with non-hostile targets. We all know how easy it is to slaughter civilians, and I am not interested in seeing how many ways they can dice a child. I want to see how they react to a live hostile target with light to moderate experience. Pitoria is a rough place, and I do not doubt that those who have started the uprising have some sort of combat experience.

Take great care and do this right. I want to see if this new project is worth continuing.

It was a macabre scene as Azrael hit the cold sands of Pitoria. The dead and dying were laying everywhere as plague swept through the streets, claiming victim after victim with no discrimination. Azrael and his Sentinels were outfitted with biohazard gear as well as the new soldiers, and the he wasted no time in sending his new students of war into the hostile areas. He did as his father instructed and made sure that they were kept away from the civilian sectors, while his Sentinels began restoring order in the streets and setting up triage points.

Chaos had broken out everywhere with the absence of law enforcement, and numerous fires had erupted due to the riots and looting that had already taken place. The Sentinels wasted no time in sealing off the streets and getting the dead off the sidewalks, while those that were still alive were taken to the local hospitals that had literally been barricaded shut by frightened doctors and nurses. Now, under an armed Sentinel escort, the unknown virus could be fought by not only Pitorian doctors, but the medical corps that Azrael brought with him.

But Azrael himself was not interested in saving lives, but instead he was eager to get some killing done. A group of renegade troublemakers had slaughtered all the inhabitants of a small village nearby and taken refuge there, only after sacking the nearby towns. The sounds of Freek APC's filled the air as the new warriors began moving to their designated staging area. Light armor and artillery would support the infantry assault on the enemy stronghold, and as the last of the troops fell into formation, Azrael issued forth his battle plan.

Alright men, this is what you have been bred for. In your path stands a vile enemy that has exploited the dead and dying, and under Lord Dreadfire's orders you are to relieve them of life. Do whatever you deem necessary, your proverbial leash has been taken off as of this moment. Kill all that oppose you, and make your Warlord proud.

Azrael was interrupted as the boom of mobile artillery drowned out all other noise, sendind precision guided ordinance into the enemy base camp. The 406th had been broken up into a three pronged strike force, and under mechanized support they began their slow advance forward, concentrating the bulk of their artillery fire on the center and rear of the enemy position. The goal was to bombard their only escape route so heavily that they would be forced to fall back under a hail of artillery, stand and fight, or advance forward. The latter two would surelylead to their demise.

As the 406th closed in on the village, they poured out of their armored transports and began forming tactical columns along the perimeter of the enemy lines. But the rebels inside were well aware of what was happening, responding to the advances with a large volley of 60mm mortar rounds as well as shoulder fired rockets. The first test of the new soldiers was already shaping up to be a grand one.

The new breed of warriors was now under fire for the first time, although the enemy counter battery fire was nowhere near impressive. Several mortar rounds managed to land within their ranks, causing a shower of gore and body parts, but the troops remained pretty much undaunted. It was only when they came within eyesight of their foes that things turned...bad.

On the right prong, nearly the entire contingent of soldiers broke ranks and began a massed charge towards the village. After visual contact had been made, it seemed as if the 'wildmen' lost control, disobeying their orders to remain in formation. Those inside the village quickly siezed this opportunity and began to pour heavy fire down upon the charging hoard.

Azrael screamed at the top of his lungs for the men to get back in formation, but it was too late. High powered rifles and several light machine gun nests made quick work of the wildmen, leaving dozens of bodies scattered across the open plains. Azrael quickly ordered the remainder of the right prong to fall back with the rest of the advancing infantry detachment.

Those inside the village began to cheer and crack jokes about their less than impressive opponents, labeling them 'The Fallen'....because all they seemed capable of was dying.

Half winded, Azrael went from column to column and began screaming at his men. Though in Automagfreek this would most certainly be a death wish, but on the battlefield things were much different, and Azrael did not fear the Fallen at all. With a burning rage in his eyes and with fists clenched, Azrael poured out his anger upon his troops, vowing certain death at his own hands if they did not accomplish this task.

What the fuck was that out there? Are you so intent on killing that you forget about a little thing called common sense? I am your commander, and out here you will do as I say, like it or not. In the next city lies my personal detachment of Sentinels, and if you pissants cannot handle the job of wiping out a few poorly armed and trained insurgents, then Dreadfire will most certainly destroy you and your brothers back home.

The Fallen began to stir in anger as they contemplated dispatching the young Azrael, but hate soon turned to admiration at the sight of what happened next. Mere minutes after their summoning, a small fist of Sentinels arrived via armored transport. If you cavemen can't seem to follow a battle plan, then I refuse to take you into combat. I will take my real warriors with me instead.

Moments later the squad fragmented into smaller fire teams, and immediately they took to the battlefield. Under a second barrage of supportive artillery, Azrael and the Sentinels made a daring thrust into the enemy village. Large plumes of red smoke masked their movements, and the Fallen watched the action via real time satellite feed. The young Warchief had moved into position under cover of the smoke, and in unison the Sentinels struck.

As if coming straight from the bowels of Hell, the Sentinels suddenly appeared through the smoke, firing their assaut rifles with great accuracy and efficiency. The left flank of the enemy position was overwhelmed so quickly that the rest of the insurgents thought that it was their own men moving about. They were surprised when the Sentinels on the left flank began shooting them in the back, and Azrael himself made a daring charge right up the center. The Fallen watched as the Warchief began to slay the insurgents one by one, and soon he drove further into the village.

The Fallen grew impatient for action as they watched a numerically inferior force nearly take the village singlehandedly. Suddenly they moved back into formation and moved at great speeds across the open field towads the insurgents. Azrael looked over his shoulder in time to see his men reforming and preparing to attack, and at that moment, he ordered his Sentinels to withdraw.

He soon rejoined his men at the front and ordered them to descend upon their enemy. You have seen what a disciplined and obedient soldier can do. To accomplish anything on the battlefield one must follow orders to the last detail. Go now, follow the plan given to you and show your Empire what you are made of.

The tide had now turned, and the insurgents were extremely confused at this point. One moment they had been fending off close quarter attacks, only to have their foes disappear and remanifest themselves on the open plains. The insurgents on site began to whisper amongst themselves that Azrael had been leading the attack personally, and he had been given the mantle of 'The Devil's Son' for his ability to strike with the ferocity of a demon and disappear into darkness just as fast.

The Fallen had begun their coordinated attack under Azrael's leadership, and at last the Warchief saw with his own eyes what these new soldiers were capable of. Like the Viking days of old, the Fallen decended upon the settlement like a swarm of locusts, setting the structures ablaze and slaughtering any insurgents that stood in their path. Those that attempted to surrender were either shot in the face or dismembered by their standard issue infantry swords. They had definately taken a page out of the Sentinel textbook....

The left prong drove deep into the already wounded enemy flank and quickly swept around to the rear as the artillery support ceased. With their only escape cut off, the insurgents barricaded themselves into several buildings and attempted to make a last stand. Hundreds of armed rebels continued the fight to the death with their comrades dying all around them. As the other prongs of the Fallen onslaught drove into the village, several of the buildings that housed the insurgents were set on fire, and those that attempted to flee were butchered in the streets.

After another hour the sounds of battle grew quiet, and the last of the insurgents were put to death. After surveying the destruction all around him, Azrael ordered the entire village to be burned to the ground. The bodies of the dead had been smeared throughout the streets, and the Warchief deemed the village too polluted with human flesh to be slavaged.

AMF High Command had been watching the events unfold via satellite, and mixed emotions filled the Freek military leaders. While they were extremely vicious and very skilled in the art of murder, they were extremely wild and difficult to control in battle. It was feared that Automagfreek was breeding nothing more than cannon fodder.

Later that day Azrael made his way back to the site of the viral outbreak, where his Sentinels had managed to contain the sick before the disease could spread. After the days events he was not interested in treating the ill, so he retired to his flagship and constructed his comabt report for his father, Lord Dreadfire.

Father, these wildmen are a curse upon me.

I myself nearly met my end at their hands. Upon sight of their enemy, they broke ranks and carged foolishly towards them...overcome with the rage and desire to kill. I believe that they are too ferocious for their own good, for they abandon common sense and tactics and degenerate into a near caveman like state of mind.

Only after leading a small Sentinel charge myself did they get thier act together. I believe that before the battle they did not respect me nor trust my judgement, but after charging across open plains and entering the village myself I guess I won their favor.

More training and discipline is needed, although I believe that I can shape the 406th myself. I suggest that our Sentinel program leaders collaborate with Project Black Sunrise staff on how to keep these men, crowned today by our foes as 'The Fallen', in line, because as it stands now I would not lead another unit of these men into combat.

We have seen reports of the recent actions on the Island of Pitoria by the newly-formed 406th Legion and the disappointing initial actions. If troubles could be a continuing practice in the mission, we would be willing to provide Aequatian forces to aid in the cleansing operations. We merely ask as it has been too long since the last joint deployment between our nations forces and we feel it would be beneficial to current relations and bring joy to our collective populations.

As many other past operations, Aequatian Marines would be committed to the action. We eagerly await your reply.

The 406th Legion has crushed the main elements of resistance on Pitoria despite a rocky start. Under guidance of my son Azrael, their mission was a success. However, aggressive renegade elements still remain and need to be destroyed immediately. We welcome Aequatian Marines to join the 406th and tell us their thoughts on our newest fighting force.

At this stage, our new troops who have been branded with the name 'The Fallen', are in their test run. Several thousand of them have been bred and many thousands more are being born and rasied as we speak. We would welcome Aequatio's thoughts on our new soldiers. You may deploy to the western side of the island at your convenience.

Once we have mustered a force suitable for combat, they will be deployed via Navy assault ships. We hope to witness these new warriors in combat and will be sure to administer a controlled survey throughout the fighting force once operations have ceased.

Word had reached Azrael of the pending arrival of Aequatian Marines on the western shores. Chaos was still present in the west, where bands of looters and insurgents had begun pillaging city after city. Though the island was rather small, it would take Azrael some time to reform his troops and move into position, which should give a fist of Aequatian Marines enough time to land.

AMF High Command had received Azrael's initial report on the action of the Fallen, and immediately adjustments were tought up and put into action. The Fallen were bred to be fierce warriors, but their intense lust for blood and death blinded their judgement. These were certainly valuable observations on Azrael's behalf, ones that would affect the entire program and perhaps one day the entire AMF military.

Word had spread across Pitoria of the slaughter of the first band of insurgents, and those that continued to resist began to brace for the coming storm. Others realized the futility of resistance and quickly abandoned their quest of carnage and began to flee for their lives. But for the most part the resistance movement continued full force, and the joint strike team of Fallen and Marines would soon show the troublemakers of Pitoria the price of their actions.

Under the creak of tracked vehicles, Azrael and the 406th loaded up and prepared to sack one of the largest insurgent centers. Soon the Marines would arrive on the other side of the city, and soon peace would be restored to Pitoria.
