"General, the engineers have finished setting up the system. A systems check has revealed no abnormalities and everything is in the green."
"Good, have them send the message."
"Aye, sir."
A coded message was sent to all current members of the Galactic Federation Of Free Alliances.
To: G.F.F.A. Members
From: The Holy Empire Of SeaQuest
Attention allies, we are about to test a new star system defense weapon and would like you to send representatives to witness the birth of a new era in defense technology. Enclosed in this message are the co-ordinates of the Litrenia system. We await your representatives there.

Commissar of National Defense Jack Cortes replied,
"Sure. I'll come down and check it out."
He then got on a shuttle, and began moving towards the coordinates....
Asuke was still seated in the Transmission Room, participating in the meeting, when a small light blinked on her control panel. "Hmmm... Interesting..."

Message to The Holy Empire
From: Starenell
We will be sending a Blood Priest to observe. He will arrive in a week.
The Empire will send Warmaster Tsavong Lah to observe this "test". He will travel aboard his flagship the Uro-lk V'ahl (about twice the size of an Imperial-II class SD with twice the fighter compliment) Exquisite Death.

Another message was sent from Litrenia IV:
It is recommended that any large ships you arrive in drop you off on the planet's surface and then leave the system. Project Flare is untested and we wouldn't want to accidently 'vape' any of your capital ships in the test firing of it.

From: The Armed Republic of Paintcheck
This is Fleet Admiral Akker of the Armed Republic of Paintcheck. I am en route to Litrenia and should arrive in the next day. Hope to see some pretty fireworks. Akker out.
The admiral sat back on the bridge of the Victory, a mon calamari cruiser. (http://giochiguerrestellari.andromedafree.it/trilogia/veicoli-robot/MonCalamariStarCruiser.jpg). He was looking forward to seeing some big explosions.

General Garinus McLeon acknowledged the messages that had already arrived from the incoming representatives. He smiled when he read the Paintcheck mention of 'fireworks'.
"Blimey," he thought, "These guys are in for quite the show."

The Imperial Deatharon Mothership Cerberus headed to the Litrenia system. They were still in a Wormhole that shot them out of the Antaries Galaxy to there location. The Priest of the Antarans Koblish Sonial watched from the bridge. He saids to the captain a Maldoran Legionare captain, "Why must we humor these heretics and not convert them by force?" The Captain replies, "We are currently allied with these heretics. The Church will not risk a Maldoran with them unless they prove to be an enemy of the Empire and the Church." The Priest smiles and watchs the Wormhole shoot them out into the system. The Priest lets out a hail:
We are hear for the demostartion you wish to show us.

General McLeon sent a response to Deatharon ship:
We are uploading co-ordinates for you to land a shuttle at on the planet's surface. We have a view-screen set up down here that will provide a picture relayed from an un-manned satellite in orbit. We are trying to keep ships out of the test system until after the test as we do not want any to get destroyed on accident.
The message was broadcast on all local channels.

Cortes soon took his shuttle to the coordinates, and manuevered carefully to the destination, aware of the risks involved...
In the black of space, the distant star fields drifted lazily about. Suddenly, in one small area, the normally gentle starlight twisted and churned. A bright light flashed and a wormhole blasted into being. A bright light glided out, and as it did so, the light seem to sheet away like water as energies beyond comprehension crackled around the object that was slowly revealing itself. A dark, smooth hull quickly became visible as the object revealed itself as a vessel. With smooth elegance, it flew in orbit around the planet carrying Eshirian Representative Arlay Chen to the test site. A simple message was broadcast:

"Hear that Major? This thing'll kill us, be careful." said Arlay on the bridge of the vessel. The pilot only grinned, and replied, "Yes, sir." Arlay chuckled and leaned back in his chair.

<<<(OOC: Temporary Thread Hijack... ND, I've responded to the Diplomacy RP. End Thread Hijack. )>>>
At the edge of the Litrenia system, a massive space-rock looking vessel reverted to realspace. Twice the length of an Imperial-II Star Destroyer and looking just as intimidating the Exquisite Death was the flagship of Warmaster Tsavong Lah. Made from yorik coral and sprouting several docking arms with over 150 coralskippers attached as well as nearly 200 lava cannons, it was a formidable weapon. If it were not on a peaceful mission it would strike fear into the hearts of even the most hardened sailor.
Without communicating with the planetary authorities, Exquisite Death brazenly made it's way through the system towards Litrenia IV. Never one to fear death or show cowardice - real or imagined - infront of his men, Tsavong Lah ordered the vessel directly through the testing zone to Litrenia IV orbit. Slowly and deliberately the vessel moved through the system until it reached orbit. Only when it was orbiting the planet did it respond to the worried hails of the SeaQuestian authorities.
"This is Warmaster Tsavong Lah of the Talaaxian Empire. I have honoured you with my presence in order to view the testing of this "Project Flare". You will provide me with coordinates for my personal yorik-trema to land. My vessel will leave the system when I have landed."
OOC: The Warmaster is supremely arrogant so don't take him too seriously. He's going to act like this for the whole RP.

The Imperial Mothership beamed down the Priest and then immediatly jumped out of the system. They knew the Antarans would protect the Priest from harm..
A simple Probe transmitting Godulan Identification codes entered the system, preparing to take multiple scans of whatever the test would cause.

OOC: @Talaax: Not a problem. Sounds like some of my High-Tension Thinkers (think super think-tank. Very high stress mentalities, super scientists, very touch-and-go with them (ie, Fragile: Handle With Extreme Care)).
@All: Do you think this is enough members of the G.F.F.A., or should we wait for others? I want this as democratic as possible.
IC: The co-ordinates were sent to the Warmaster as well as a message saying he could leave a realy villip in orbit to relay images of the test to him. That way he wouldn't have to bother with the holographic view screen set-up for the other representatives.
Meanwhile...
As each representative arrived, he or she was shown to a large room with theater style seating. One wall of this room was taken up a large view-screen. At the opposite end, where tables full of snacks and refreshments from all over the Empire. The seats were all hand-crafted pieces of solid wood that had been hand-carved.

"I must compliment you on the friendly relations you must have with such wide variety of people you have gethered here to show this new weapon. I greatly look forward to seing whatever this thing is, in action."
At the designated landing pad, a large almost tadpole-like vessel set down in the very center. After a few moments a mouth-like hatch opened in the front of the vessel and unfurled what seemed to be a tongue. Stepping out of the "hatch", Warmaster Tsavong Lah surveyed the welcoming party and the landing pad as a whole.
Standing well over 7 feet tall, the Warmaster was large even for a Talaaxian. His once long black hair had been torn out, except for a patch near the back of his head which had been pulled into a pony tail. Lips split open with razors, face scarred and tattooed over every inch and nose broken to such a point that it might as well not have been there, the Warmaster's face was appropriately grotesque for his rank. Over most of his body, plates of voduun crab armour had been grafted directly into his flesh, making him almost a walking suit of armour. Carrying his tsaisi - a smaller amphistaff that served as a baton of rank, as well as a coufee, he exited the yorik-trema craft. He locked the lead SeaQuestian in an ironclad glare and spoke in his most imposing and authoritarian voice.
"You will show me to this viewing area immediately! I will tolerate no delay..." He then turned back to the vessel, shouted something in his own language and the hatch resealed. In orbit, Exquisite Death made a micro-jump out of the system.

OOC: I judge this is enough participants. Don't want to crowd a simple test thread.
IC: The Warmaster was shown to the viewing room. Almost right after he entered, the lights in the room dimmed and the viewscreen came to life depicting the SeaQuestian logo.
"If you would please take your places," said General McLeon from the back of the room, "The show is ready to begin."
As soon as all the representatives had sat or remained standing as he or she chose, General McLeon keyed a few commands on his P.A.D.D.. The view screen switched from displaying the logo to a tactical view of the system. That's when the base's computer took over the presentation.
"This system," it said, "was choosen for its isolation. Civilian traffic doesn't generally travel out this far, thus none is threatened in case something goes wrong.
"First, you will be provided with a simple explanation of the system that has been put into place.
"Artificial asteroid belts were formed," they were highlighted on-screen, "and installations were placed in orbit around the star. The orbits and several other relationships between the star, the asteroid belts, and the installations were all computed using formulae created by a new system of math developed by the Council Of Scientists. These formula were used as the relationships would be different for each star.
"At a distance of 1.2647 A.U.'s from the star, a mass of rocky debris was placed. This debris is equivilant to the mass of seven M-class planets.
"And now we will begin the test fire."
The screen shifted to a live view of the system relayed from a SeaQuestian probe in an orbit that, at the moment, gave it a "bird's eye" view of the entire star system.
The sun, shining so brightly, darkened almost to the point of invisibility. Small asteroids in the target debris disappeared, each puffing out in a tiny but brilliant sparkle of light.
The, before the beam could effect the enormous masses of the larger asteroids in the debris cloud, the engineers lost it. The sun flashed up----dulled----brightened----darkened----wavered. The beam waxed and waned irregularly; some of the large asteroids actually began to be pushed out of position by the shear violence of the beam.
As the representatives watched, the engineers got the beam under control----and, in a heart-stopping wavering fashion, held it together. It flared----sputtered----ballooned out----but very shortly, before they could get out of its way, the remaining asteroids began to glow. Ice-caps melted, then boiled. Mountain ranges melted and flowed sluggishly down into valleys.
The cease fire order was given. The sun brightened to its wonted splendor, the asteroids began to visibaly to cool.
McLeon looked at the report that appeared on his P.A.D.D..
He looked up and said, "According to the report I just recieved, the chief engineer of this project expects he can get the bugs out in a few weeks.
"And before you ask, I will explain what we did. As I do not wish to bore you with the technical stuff, I'll explain the net result as simply as I can.
"The system that you witnessed in action, was designed to concentrate upon the target debris practically the whole energy output of the sun. The energy equivilant, roughly, of four million one hundred and fifty thousand tons per second of disintegrating matter."

The Brigadier General went over the image in his head. Four point one five megatons per second. Intruging.
"So you draw energy directly from the star and concentrate it into a beam? Is that what you do?" The General wanted to know, for clarification.
SeaQuest
31-10-2005, 21:56
The General shrugged, "The best way I can describe it is this: the entire device turned the entire system into what could be described as a vacuum tube. The asteroid belts, and maybe some of the planets and moons, are the grids and plates. Frankly, I don't really know what the star is. I do know, that with the formulae, the engineers can install one of these sunbeams in any system once they calculate the mathmatical relationships unique to that star."

Just an impartial note on the military repurcusions of this weapon from the peanut gallery;
It turns your sun into the largest military target in the star system, unless you have something obvious that can be more readily targeted to disable it instead
Basicly, you're OOCly authorising any enemy you have to try and destroy your sun, whereas sun destroying weapons and tactics have usually been religated to the catagory of 'plot device' in the past.
*does a little research and math*
91'921 teratons per second, assuming you've got the whole output; ouch.
...
*slaps forehead*
No, no, wait; we're all totally forgetting about the lightspeed delay. 1 AU is about eight light minutes, and it only gets longer as you move outwards. Still makes your sun a bigass target, but nowhere near as effective a weapon as I first thought. Probally for the best, tho, given it's power; RP needs ballance.

Well, the issues I mentioned are relivent to any weaponised sun, unless you make the beam FTL, which mitigates some of them. That, however, would certainly get you ignored by alot of people; it's already borderline, even disregaurding your NS population size(and that's important; it's the only impartial power-ratio guide we've got).

OOC: Good point. My plan is to keep this in reserve as a last resort weapon, that is why I have the other defense weapons planned, the sunbeam will always be the last weapon used in any system defense operation.. Who knows, the bugs may take more than the stipulated few weeks to fix. Also, I never really intended this puppy for mass production. And, the sunbeam was designed for use against targets on a planetary scale.
