Peacekeeping Operations Commence in Arabanistan
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A press statement from the Department of Defense released yesterday revealed that Halberdgardian troops have been deployed to the nation of Arabanistan, a long-time hostile power, in order to secure that nation for the Imperium.
The report states that the HCIA had recently learned that the radical Islamic regime of the nation of Arabanistan had suddenly collapsed, threatening to plunge the country into anarchy. This intelligence was quickly forwarded to Secretary of Defense Randall Schrader, and shortly thereafter, with President Kanos' approval, a peacekeeping contingent of 10,000 Halberdgardian troops were deployed to the region, with securing the country and rebuilding infrastructure being top priorities.
The process of rebuilding could take up to six months and billions of dollars, though cost and time estimates are projected to be lower than average, as there was not significant damage to the national infrastructure after the collapse of the government. Rather, the costs are expected to stem mainly from bringing Arabanistani infrastructure up to Halberdgardian standards.
According to some Department of Defense officials, the collapse of the radical Islamic regime in Arabanistan had been foreseen for some time. "We've been watching the intrigues within the Arabanistani government for some time, and from our intelligence, we could tell it [the downfall of the regime] had been in the works for a while. We were just waiting for the final collapse to happen so we could secure the territory," said an official at the Pentagon, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the operation.
Schrader reiterated his support for the operation in a press conference held shortly after the announcement was made. "The Imperium does not seek to seize land for nefarious reasons. We look instead to provide for the people of Arabanistan, to give them the security and freedom they never had under the previous regime," he declared, adding, "Like citizens of other Halberdgardian Provinicial Territories, the people of Arabanistan will enjoy full Halberdgardian citizenship and the rights guaranteed to all territorial citizens."
Traditionally, citizens of Provincial Territories have enjoyed all the rights of Halberdgardian citizenship, with one key exception: citizens living in the Provinicial Territories themselves and not the mainland may vote for candidates to the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of their territory, but are ineligible to vote in presidential elections. Citizens of Provincial Territories that move to the mainland are eligible to vote in presidential elections, but are ineligible to vote in territorial elections. These same conditions are expected to be applied to Arabanistan.
