I am going to move to FT. I am thinking of doing something based off Battletech/Mechwarrior. What does everyone think of this? I am also wondering about how the world is structred. Is there something like NS earth?

Meh. I use Battletech/Mechwarrior pretty much only for ground units; my spacecraft only have a few Battletech influences in their designs. For space combat I use mostly Star Wars though I do mix tech bases quite a bit and am currently acquiring a shitload of Klingon tech (mostly for the cloaking devices).

Don't feel the need to limit yourself to only one tech base. Though I must confess I always smile when I can read a good MechWarrior RP, would do it myself, but I have yet to RP a war; I expect to RP civil war fairly soon. I will warn you that there are a few RPers out there who pretty much ignore Battletech mostly because of the high centers of gravity inherent to 'Mechs; one in particular is highly egregious (I won't name names).

Edit: As far as claiming territory goes, I think most FT players just make up a star system, or collection of star systems, and plop it somewhere in (insert galaxy here).

I personally prefer Total Annihlation tech for my FT stuff, it gives a good balance between powered armour, giant battle-bots, uber-tanks and giant spaceships o' doom.
Throw in massed infantry, and your ready to go ;)

All my FT tech is Pandora's Star, I like it but you can make your own call.
It is a book, FYI.

About the cloaking thing... Wouldn't it be wiser to collect a bunch of Romulan vessels? I always thought that their cloaking tech was superior?

EDIT: I use original tech myself, although, there are instances where I use more common Sci-Fi stuff, like wormholes and such, which are all pretty much accepted Sci-Fi convention anyway.

I believe that the Romulans have better cloaking technology as far as not being detected but the Klingons have the ablity to transport while cloaked. The newer Reman(Romulan Subclass) ship such as the simitar in nemisis has superior cloaking to just about anything in the Star trek world as of now short of the 'phase cloak' that was never fully developed.

I myself also prefer to use my own technology goin as far as to design my own ships and everything. Some of the accuall technology is based off of other basic scifi technologies.

Edit: In my opinion if you have the time, develope your own technology but if all you want to do is jump into some good rps fast then copying scifi tech is the best and fastest ways. Most common seem to be Starwars(SW), Star Trek(ST), Babylon 5(B5), Warhammer 40K or just 40K. There are considerably more from various lesser known anime and other scifi shows and movies. But really its up to you.
