Dispositions

It was three in the morning when Squadron Leader Matthew Yeremenko and Flight Lieutenant Edward Chiu’s Tiger interceptor blazed northward from the tarmac in full afterburner, climbing to its operational altitude. Heavily laden with fuel – including two conformal fuel tanks above the wing roots – dummy missiles and datalink pods, the Tiger rose slowly, the engines greedily consuming propellant at a prodigious rate. S/L Yeremenko’s gaze bounced rapidly from the radar display on his left to the tactical display on his right whilst visually checking the other systems various readings to ensure everything was working properly. Behind him, F/Lt Chiu peered at the progress of the Isselmere-Nielander Army (INA) and Royal Isselmere-Nieland Marines (RINM) inland from the Omzian port of Saunderhurst on one head-down display as he connected the aircraft to the rest of the UKIN’s local air defence network on another. Around them, three other Tiger interceptors were performing similar missions, radiating from the airbase along the compass points. Banking eastward to avoid going supersonic over one of the many towns on South Insen Island, the RINAF aircrew prepared to meet their naval cousins.

In the waters to the east of the Omzian city of Saunderhurst on South Insen Island steamed the 13th (UKIN) Naval Squadron bearing the flag of Vice Admiral Gilbert Murray. Twelve of the squadron’s submarines had formed a wide picket around the flotilla as destroyers and frigates sailed about their larger charges, forming a protective ring. The unit’s coastal defence contingent was busy protecting the arrival of the last forces from the Isselmere-Nielander Army and the Royal Isselmere-Nieland Marines landing at Saunderhurst. Above the ships flew Cormorant anti-submarine helicopters busily dipping their sonars into the ocean as their heliborne early warning siblings directed Sea Fury jets above the Lord- and Hornby-class carriers. Further out and above soared Spectre fighters on combat air patrol supervised by Heimdall airborne early warning planes, which were themselves guarded by two-plane elements of Spectre fighters.

An RINAF Thisby AEW overflying the eastern coast of the island coordinated operations between the RINAF and RINN’s Fleet Air Arm, but that didn’t stop either service from spiking one another’s aircraft to be absolutely sure. The Thisby's own guard -- a four-plane flight of Scimitar fighters -- were silent with their radars set to passive reception, relying on both the Thisby's active radar and those of opposing aircraft to detect any threat.

God bless jolt, where my wonderful foreign characters actually show up when you post them. Sadly, I edited the spelling on everything in order to display on the WP boards. Therefore, here's everything spelled wrong, but phonetically correct!

OOC: I have just found out that I will have much less time for NS than I had initially expected, so my apologies for not being able to post too much during the duration of this exercise, especially for the rest of this month. But I will try my best to do so, and sorry for this crappy post. /OOC

"Here's the report for this hour," the accompanying lieutenant announced blankly with a firm gesture as he held out the thin of stack of paper for the awaited grasp, his gaze fixed on the blue mesh that made up the walls of this darkened room.

Admiral Jon Hoganshaben nodded at the reception of the papers. "Thank you, lieutenant," he answered with a hint of appreciation, a hint which was overwhelmed nevertheless by the predominant sense of concentration at the task of hand. After receiving the stack of paper, he unknowingly sat it on the metallic surface of the console in front of him. Rubbing his oily thumbs against the four silver diamonds on either side of his collar, he once again repeated the scrutiny of the massive touch screen in front of him, which covered the entire section of the wall like a maze of varied colours and slight movements.

One label below this astonishing mass of individual photoelectronic cells identified it as the Combat Information Distribution System Interface, one of the only three on the five walls of the huge Combat Information Center in the Ragnarok battleship intended for the role of command. The facilities intended for this role within the ship were quite splendid indeed, and the screens and interfaces proved to be much user-friendly even to the most unaware of the eyes in the room. After sparing a sparse quantity of time for a short examination of the hourly report, which outlined the disposition of forces in the theatre, he returned the papers to their original positions, and looked up.

He immediately noticed the centerpiece of the screen - a triangular seven-sided shape, marked in bright orange, which marked the position of the very vessel that his feet are set on. A line of white text, nearly indistinguishable to eyes more than just a few meters way, marked this shape as the ONCS Southbridge. Rings upon rings of gatherings of smaller vessels, which showed themselves as an elegant mosaic of blue, gold, silver, maroon, and green, disposed themselves concentrically around the ship, which was also accompanied by another select few vessels - predominantly, large amphibious vessels that predominantly lacks much armoured protection and air defence cover, aircraft carriers boasting an amazing array of mechanical birds, and smaller battleships sporting their not-quite-so-small arrays of gun turrets. They were moving, but not so much - only slightly above ten knots as of now. He digested this information.

After initially debating in his own mind about whether to continue his scrutiny or to continue with further interactions with the subordinate officers below his rank, he chose the former, partly to be greatly aware of the current situation at hand, and partly in the hope of avoiding the nosiness of some of his inferior-ranked officers. He once again concentrated his attention on the escorts. Among the inner rings, large cruisers and destroyers in rings provided an abundance of air defence cover, while their teeth clanked with a combination of small gun artillery and a far larger array of missiles and other inventions of rocketry. As the Admiral's eyes began to slowly depart from this image outwards, destroyers and smaller frigates now marked the call of the day, some still on a straight course, while many others orbited in smaller circles at a somewhat slow speed, ready to guard the battlegroup from both aerial and submerged escorts. Further out, picket vessels - primarily large cruisers and destroyers - continued their leisurely course, while shutting off all but their passive sensors, to hopefully gain an element of surprise when the moment came. A moment that would not prove as catastrophic as a real battle, but a moment nevertheless that could warrant the mass expulsion of sweat and the experience of worry in the waiting halls of the First Admiral's offices.

However, to guard against this unwanted result, the Admiral took great care in reminding his submarine and air warfare officers. While replenishment vessels marked themselves behind this bulky mass of vessels, smaller attack submarines and larger guided missile submarines instead took the directly opposite position, leisurely and stealthily cruising along ahead of the battlegroup. Overhead, airborne early warning and anti-submarine patrol aircraft made their own efforts in scanning the air and the deep ocean for any undesired 'threats', while both short- and long-range air patrol patterns dotted the screen, many far beyond the reach of the ships, in their oval rings. ASW helicopters also proceeded along their respective courses, while small UAVs - unmanned aerial vehicles - lazily swam along in the ocean of air, abundant of the smell that only humans could sense.

Satisfied at the thought of the battle group's preparedness, he marked his face with a smile. However, their battlegroup still had a long distance to go - one quarter of 10,000 kilometers, in fact. He still has a briefing session with the skipper of the vessel along with individual group and flotilla commander, he reminded himself.

And he acted upon the reminder, his boots slowly departing the cold metal surfaces of the room's deck, the clanking of rubber echoing across the room as men - dressed in dark blue uniforms - continued their individual scrambles and troubleshooting sessions seemingly unaware of their boss' gradual leave...
