Czardas's IC OOC thread

Czardas

This thread is for all the IC information on Czardas I have collected to date, in paragraph format, to prevent having to write this into all of my RPs. This is not an "ask about nation name" thread. With that cleared up, here goes.

~~~Czardas Part I: Historical~~~
A Brief History of Czardas
Czardas's history is divided into several main sections. While the Czardaian plains were occupied as much as 4000 years ago, Czardas itself is only seven hundred years old. However, the history of Czardas extends for many years beyond the creation of the so-called Concordance.
Civilization was first recorded in the areas now occupied by Czardas some 3800 years ago, with evidence of earlier settlements. This early Czardaian civilization was reasonably advanced, based around the city of Mariosz. The early Czardaian peoples were apparently of a Middle Eastern or similar descent, speaking Indo-European languages.
Approximately 800 years into this civilization's recorded history, it was conquered by the Cvarkens, a warlike race "from the east", responsible for much of the Oriental background of today's native Czardaians. The Cvarken Empire flourished for some 1000 years; however, slave revolts and outside attacks weakened it, and it eventually fell in the year 181 AD. However, it remained, at least in name, around the city of Czarna for another three hundred years, powerless to do anything to stop the barbarian invasions from the north and east.
In the year 468, Germanic finally conquered the Cvarkens. They were to rule for nearly seven hundred years. This was followed by a period of invasion from the French, who sought to claim the land for their country and for a time established a feudal system in some coastal cities. However, they were finally driven out in 1307, when Czardas was granted independence as a democracy.
Originally, Czardas was known as The Commonwealth of Czardas; however, the "commonwealth period" ended in 1361 with the creation of the Council of 400. Since then Czardas's history is fairly uneventful, up until the later 1800s, when the formerly isolationist nation began to take a more active voice in international affairs. This led it to war in the 1930s, where it was defeated and forced to sign a treaty forbidding, among other things, foreign trade and intervensionism.
Czardas retreated into isolation, which lasted until the 1990s, when it came out of isolation once more and began to re-enter international affairs. Czardas currently is known for sending out standard greetings to all nations, promoting democracy and culture, and aiding revolutions (this in itself is a mistaken notion, but it happens).
The Importance of History in Czardas
Czardas's patriotic people value their history highly, and look down on forms of government other than their longstanding democracy as slightly inferior or regrettable. In addition, having suffered long decades of bloodshed before the creation of the Czardaian nation, the people do not go to war lightly. However, with the nature of the warlike Cvarkens and Germanic tribes still in their blood, when war comes they are willing to fight hard to protect their country.
Czardas values its historical sites greatly. For instance, Mariosz, the oldest continually inhabited city in possibly the world, is protected by a huge amount of anti-missile equipment to defend against an attack, which might destroy the city's old buildings. On the other hand, newer cities like Palma have fewer defenses against a missile attack by far.
Czardaians also value history classes, and most universities have large history departments. Whole classes deal simply with different periods in the region's history, and thousands of Czardaian students major in history every year. However, this is not quite as large as the country's information technology and computer science studies sections.
~~~Czardas Part II: Social, Political, and Economic~~~

The Socioeconomic Structure of Czardas

In Czardas, the social structure disintegrated long ago. The reason for this is unknown, but it apparently had something to do with the fact that the nation's incredibly high tax rates, nearing 100%, deemed the division between rich and poor insignificant. An "upper class", so to speak, is made up of members of the Council of 400 and moderators of the vast forums, Czardasnet, that connect the entire nation. Everyone else is pretty much on the same class.

Although the taxes are high, few people actually pay all of them, making for a fairly small national budget and GDP. Those that do not pay, however, or pay less, are generally found out, but due to the copious absence of a police force usually suffer little penalties.

Business owners are also seen as upper class, even though they are taxed the highest. This may be because they have the largest number of ways of avoiding those taxes. Large corporations have on occasion their own private armies, paid to deter the nonexistent police force or simply defend the company. In the absence of a central government, these moves are seen as necessary by many.

The Oddities of the Political System

Several long and detailed volumes have been written on Czardas's political system, and none of them cover it in its entirety; I'll try to be a bit more terse here. There are several prominent political parties in Czardas that have developed over the years:

- The People's Conservative Party—on the left, aiming to conserve the people's rights; in a coalition with the Libertarian Expansionist Party. Currently in control. (approx. 40% of country)
- Federal Democratic Party—pro-larger government, in a coalition with the Communist Party. (approx. 31% of country)
- Libertarian Expansionist Party—ultra-anarchist, aiming to dissolve the Council of 400 and establish complete democracy (approx. 15% of country)
- Communist Party—obviously communist (;)) (approx. 6% of country)
- Capitalist Revolutionary Front—pro-capitalist (approx. 5% of country)
- Independents—unaffiliated parties (approx. 3% of country)

These are just the largest. Czardas contains literally thousands more, as the rule is that five people must agree on a party with an implementable ideal for it to become acceptable. These parties are rarely represented in any governing bodies, however.

Czardas is a direct democracy. The people vote on laws proposed by the Council of 400, which is elected every two years. Members may not serve more than 8 terms (16 years). The Council proposes laws for the rest of the citizens to vote on, and every year elects a Treasurer General to collect and distribute all the taxes, which the citizens have selected their destinations on the tax forms.

Above this is the Governing Council, which consists of between 10 and 40 members, plus their respective staff. This council is the executive branch; one member deals with each government department: Welfare, Education, Healthcare, Defense, and so on. In addition, also on this council is the Foreign Minister, Head of Intelligence, Secretary General, and Supreme General (military commander).

The Governing Council has no real leader. No-one can be said to be the "head" of Czardas's government. This in itself is confusing. In addition, the Governing Council holds little real power. However, it still has some important duties, and members of this council hold special status.

Protest is the backbone of the Czardaian political system. Protests are held daily in the streets, over just about anything. In fact, sometimes several protests are held each day, and they clash and begin fistfights over whatever the issue happens to be. Also confusing the issue is the fact that armed rebellion is legal, and frequent. Rebellions frequently occur, and usually result in the installation of a new government, which invariably fails after several days or weeks.

Because of this, Czardas is in near-constant political turmoil and has encountered numerous problems when trying to give aid to other countries or other such things. In addition, it has never succeeded in raising a large army except in times of direst need. However, when such times arise, the country can work together in remarkable unity considering their normal argumentative nature.

~~~Czardas Part III: Military~~~
Strategy
There are several important axioms Czardas's military strategy is based on.
Axiom #1 aka the Dagger Axiom: The dynamite comes in small packages.
The principle of Axiom #1 is what is behind the general success of Czardas's Dagger planes. It designs everything to be small and powerful enough to pack a big punch. This is true of Czardas's military, whose size is minimal but whose training therefore is superb. This is also true of Czardas's planes, of which none are extremely large except the Hailstorms. Its primary bomber base, for instance, is the Strikers, which are light multirole bombers.
Axiom #2 aka the Maneuverability Axiom: Let them throw everything they've got at us, then strike.
This axiom led to victories during wars such as the Imperial Galactican wars. Enemy forces tend to be eager to put up a show of force against the smaller Czardaian armies and thus send out huge numbers of missiles, planes, soldiers, etc. Czardaians simply make them angry enough to send out all of their missiles, planes, soldiers, etc. so they can get into the now-defenseless homeland and strike (Imperial Galactica) or attack as soon as the enemy gets into close range (Banduria). However, it also led to the failure against the Doomingslandi aircraft, as they were fewer in number, thus lulling the Czardaians into a false sense of security.
Axiom #3 aka the Invasion Axiom: Defenders fight harder.
One of the reasons why Czardas has participated in very few invasion wars is because of its lack of interest or ability. It will have to fight hard every step of the way to victory, and the people may become discontent. Thus, it is usually best to support the defender rather than the aggressor. In addition, Czardas usually will not fight well unless it is attacked, in which case it can raise huge armies of up to 15 million (total, counting logistics, Army, Navy, Airforce). This is important for all of my enemies (or potential enemies) to remember. ;)
Ok, now for some numbers.
Army: Czardas's army is divided into three National Armies—obviously, the 1st, the 2nd, and the 3rd—and a fourth National Guard division, aka the Shocktroops, which is always ready for battle within 24 hours of a summons. Each National Army is divided into three field armies, which contain between 180,000 and 270,000 people each, for a total of up to 2,430,000 combatants in wartime. The Shocktroops contain an additional 270,000 troops, for a total of 2.7 million combatants. However, this number is only reached during a state of national emergency. Generally the army contains less than 1.8 million people.
Navy: Most commanders would add the corollary "or lack thereof" after that word, because Czardas's navy is the very epitome of Axiom #1. With a maximum strength of 280 ships and 136 submarines, the Czardaian navy is probably among the smallest in the region, if not the world. The Czardaian navy is expanding, however, and is rapidly approaching the 1,000 vessel mark. General numbers are:
- 4 Super-Battleships (SBGN)
- 16 Battleships (BBGN)
- 10 Battle-Carriers (BBCVN)
- 10 Super-Carriers (CVAN) [20 planned]
- 30 Gun Cruisers (BCN) [36 planned]
- 64 Missile Cruisers (CGN) [100 planned]
- 30 missile ships (AGN) [40 planned]
- 100 Anti-Air Destroyers (DDN) [216 planned]
- 144 Anti-Sub Frigates (FFN) [216 planned]
- 30 Command Submarines (SSAN)
- 150 Attack Submarines (SSN)
- 30 Guided Missile Submarines (SSGN)
- 128 Nuclear Light Submarines (SSLN) [400 planned]
- ~100 Diesel Light Submarines (SSLK) [500 planned]
Currently, the Czardaian Navy is working on adding a Hunter-Killer Ship design.
Air Force: Where the Czardaian navy is lacking, its air force is prominent. Czardas's air force is one of the best in the region, fairly large and powerful. A total of 42,048 planes grace the skies when the full airforce—both mobile and home-based—is in operation; this is very rare, as most wars can be won employing only about half of this, maximum.
The old system of Mobile and Domestic Air Forces has been replaced with a composite series of six air forces, each containing 4,608 combat aircrafts for a total of 27,648 combat planes. In addition, thousands of logistical aircrafts and HELOs are part of the extensive CNAF. At least one Air Force is always relegated to mobile status, usually at an allied military base or similar such location; currently that is the 3rd National Air Force, conducting operations in Fourhearts.
Special Forces: There are several of these, most notably the Special Operative Divisions. These are selected from the best of the best; they are by far the pick of the Czardaian army. Each Special Operative is trained with a variety of skills, including infiltration, assassination, covert missions, and spying. Some SpecOps (as they are known) go into the intelligence service. They have been known for missions as daring as conquering a country using a team of six and bringing a number of wars to their successful conclusion, not to mention innumerable assassinations and infiltration attempts.
Land Defenses: While most attacks from the air or sea are taken out by Czardas's air force, a backup system is necessary in case a nation with a highly skilled AF manages to break through that defense. Therefore, Czardas's major cities contain many defenses against air or sea attacks, including SAMs, missile launchers, magnetic shields, laser interceptors, and AAA batteries. In case a land attack is mounted, the Czardaian borders of known hostile nations tend to be heavily barricaded by machine-gun nests, missiles, fences, trenches, minefields, and the simplistic yet ever-popular Burmese tiger pit.
Those velocities seem high, and I'm not sure if velocity is what exactly you're looking for in a strike fighter, nor am I sure that you are looking for a ramjet/turbofan engine, and if there's a mininum velocity, then how does the aircraft land? In any case, ramjets are superior at higher altitudes than this will be operating at, and at higher velocities [namely high supersonic]. In other words, I suggest the logistically safer turbofan to a ramjet/turbofan hybrid, simply because you don't really need a ramjet, and with the velocities you're travelling at, and at the altitudes you are travelling at, a ramjet won't be as effective as it would be. As for the switchblades, I would understand if your velocities were lower, and if you make an insinuation that you planned to slow down during the strike, but if you plan a continous fast flight then you don't really need switchblades, as switching to foward swept will simply put more drag on your wings - FSW are better for more manuerability at lower velocities. That said, with a strike fighter I think you'd prefer low velocity over such high velocities, especially because during the actual strike you're not going to be flying that fast. Other than that, over the horizon platforms are huge, and the best aircraft sized radar to date would be the electronically scanned array, and the Active Electronically Scanned Array that was released on the F/A-18, which offers detection rangest at at I've heard up to 375kms. That said, how does your pain absorb LADAR? Normally it's either one or the other, and even paint won't absorb all frequencies of RADAR itself - the best modern example of radar absorbent material is a foam called Wave-X, which has a high absorbent range.
Czardas
24-02-2006, 07:14
Thanks for the comments. The Peregrine is designed as a strike fighter/interceptor hybrid, so the high velocities are for ... basically, intercepting... The ramjet/turbofan engine design was based off the fastest modern plane, the SR-71, but since that's some 20-30 years old I'd understand if something else was better... Also, you're right that the switchblade wings will just slow down the plane, and I meant the minimum velocity in-flight heh... yeah, ought to change that.
As for the rest, I'll make the necessary replacements, and maybe remove the ladar absorbent paint, because I doubt that would work anyway—I'm not yet that experienced a designer/wikisearcher to figure out how to block laser beams.
Once again, thank you for the input.
The Macabees
24-02-2006, 17:22
The SR-71, IIRC, uses a union between the turbojet and the ramjet - my Lu-27 Condor Hypersonic Interceptor uses a union between the turbofan and the ramjet, although to be honest, it's more of a turbofan than anything else. The engine comes in at full effectiveness at high altitude flight, like the SR-71. It might be a difference in doctrine, but personally I keep the strike and interception job seperate - in other words, my strke fighter [GLI-76] is a transonic aircraft that focuses on stealth during the actual strike [moving at subsonic velocities] - while the Lu-27, the interceptor, is based on insanely high velocities with low weapon yield [just a couple of air to air missiles for bomber interception].
Devlyn
02-03-2006, 19:01
Well... hmm, I'll have to think about it. Maybe I'll keep the Peregrine as the strike fighter and design another multirole aircraft for interceptor roles.
In the meantime, these will stay for now.
Czardas Class Command Battleship (BBCN)
Overview: The Czardas Class has for untold ages (in one variant or another) served as the primary capital ship of the Czardaian Navy, and for good reason. Less expensive to build and maintain than a Neptune-Class Superdreadnought, smaller and more maneuverable while still maintaining a powerful armament and armour, this battleship is one of the Czardaian Navy's stronger designs.
The latest upgrade was first built several years after the Imperial Galactican war, utilising the newest technologies for that time, which are still highly advanced several years later. Sixteen Czardas Class BBCNs are currently in service with the Czardaian Navy.
CZF-26 Blue Jay Strike Fighter
Description: After much debate and deliberation (read: procrastination), Czardaian military officials decided that it might be better to have separate aircrafts for interceptor and strike fighter roles, as the use of the Peregrine for both was not nearly as efficient as it could be, wasting a good amount of fuel and using a lot of unnecessary systems. The engineers, grumbling loudly, set to work and swiftly produced this quite capable design to serve as a pure strike fighter for the Czardaian National Airforce.
Mjenaz Class Missile Cruiser
In the same way that the Czardas Class Battleship has served the Czardaian Navy for untold decades, the Mjenaz has been the standard missile cruiser, its powerful armament and swift speed giving it the ability to raid merchant and logistical shipping, then disappear across the waters once more. A maneuverable and powerful ship for its size, it is a clear counterexample to the maxim that the cruiser is obsolete.
Adarion Class CAN (http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e236/starfire1X/adarion_rev.png)
The Adarion Class Gun Cruiser, the Czardaian designation for battlecruiser or heavy cruiser, is the fastest non-hydrofoil boat in the Czardaian Navy. It was first designed with steam turbines and sails in the later 1850s with a strong emphasis on guns; since then the design has been continually updated and expanded to reflect the ever-changing technologies available to shipbuilders.
The Adarion uses a combination of nuclear, diesel, and gas turbines to reach a maximum velocity of near 50 knots, and its primary nuclear propulsion system was recently updated from Pebblebed Reactors to Pressurised Water Reactors, as the latter is slightly more powerful and efficient. Its primary armament, in fact very much its only useful armament, consists of no fewer than twenty 406mm [16”] ETC guns, capable of sinking many ships larger than itself; however, it is not without a complement of surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles in its ninety-six dual length vertical launch tubes, usually outfitted with a variety of SSMs, SAMs, and ASROCs.
DB-3A-C Hailstorm Ultraheavy Bomber
Virtually every single civilised airforce in the world has, at some point or another, felt a need for a bigass strategic bomber to drop loads of ordnance on enemy targets and blow up things in general. At least, the Czardaian Air Force has, several times, resulting in several drafts of heavy bombers that eventually led up to the Hailstorm, which is one of the larger strategic bombers gracing the skies to this day.
The Hailstorm is constructed primarily from a lightweight titanium and amorphous steel composite, with layers of kevlar, plastics, and fiberglass built into the airframe to reduce costs and increase stealth capabilities. (Ha.) Its purpose is mostly to blow stuff up, which it has proved quite good at over its years of service with the CNAF.
