Operation Radau! - the invasion of Australia [Earth II]

The waters off Australia was calm and clear, and the stars shone through the night. The only thing that could have disturbed the calm was the many hulls that glided through the dark waters. After the successful campaign against Caledonia, the Norwegian Pacific fleet was getting ready for the next big campaign. The invasion of Australia!

At exactly 0320 AM, at a point 320 nautical miles southwest of Melbourne, fifteen Hordaland class heavy missile cruisers turned up against the wind and opened the hatches of their Mk-51 VLS tubes, revealing the towering shape of one of the most deadly weapons on Earth (II); the RGM-203A Imsdal strike missile! This weapon was fitted with a 544 kg warhead, which was propelled to a speed of Mach 7 for up to 1 000 nautical miles away from the target. The missile was a classified weapon, not known to anyone and never used in combat before. However, tests had shown that it had a 95 % hit percentage, something which made it a very accurate weapon. Each Hordaland carried 20 Imsdal missiles, and they were all fired now, one every two seconds. After fourty seconds, all the missiles had been fired, and the ships closed the VLS cells and returned to the group, where they would be resupplied with Imsdals by the improved Kiluea class ammunition vessels in the task force.

After thirty-five miles, the boosters that had propelled the missiles out of the VLS tubes dropped off and the gel-fuel, which was a Layartebian invention ignited and propelled the missile up to its marching speed of Mach 7 while flying no more than fifteen feet, or roughly three meters over the waves. Fortunately there were calm seas. Not only was that fortunate for the 225 Imsdal missiles that flew towards their targets, Tyrandian military facilities around Melbourne, but also for the 37 500 Marines carried aboard the many ships in the task force. These men would be the first units to start liberate Australia, but they would not be the last. Telemark Battaljon, a elite unit within the Norwegian Army stood ready to contribute, as did HJK (army special forces), additional Marines and regular Army soldiers. Soon, in fact, very soon, Tyrandis would wake up to a lot of trouble.

Off the Eastern cape of South Africa, the 9th Reichsmarine Fleet had been mobilized to assist in the conquest of Australia. It consisted of the RMS Rachau Advanced Aircraft Carrier, the RMS Speer Aircraft Carrier, the RMS Großeschiffe Transport Aircraft Carrier, the RMS Stahlheim Heavy Battleship, the RMS Prinz Eugen Battleship, eight FkS-119 Missile Ships, six FkS-120 Heavy Missile Cruisers, twenty WzL-12 Landing Ships, nine LS-22 SAM Ships, and fifteen LS-25 AAA Ships.

Accompanying this flotilla were several hospital ships, supply ships, and various other support vessels.

This was all supported by the 3rd, 4th, 23rd, 37th, and 43rd Fallschirmjäger Divisions and the 8th, 9th, and 10th Volksgrenadier Mechanized Divisions.

Secret IC: Along with these troops, the highly-elite and superbly-trained 11th and 13th Schwarzenjäger Black-Ops Divisions were on-board...

New Zealand

The Submarines sat peacefully and quietly outside of New Zealand waters for nearly a month now, monitoring incomming and outgoing ships. Originally intended to detect fleets capable of war and to jot down as much information as possible on them. But now since news was reaching Japan about the invasion of Australia, they decided it was time for New Zealand.

Assault Fleet, Indonesia

*SIRENS*

All ships were on stand-by to begin there hasty advance too New Zealand. Personell and Marines knew what they were supposed to do, and were only getting suited up. In minutes the fleet would be on it's way to the island nation of New Zealand.

OOC - I've kind of had a fantasy of uniting Japan and New Zealand.

OOC: I’ll RP the resistance ’cause Tyrandis hasn’t been on for ages. This is going to be relatively short, but hopefully sweet.

IC: The 225 Imsdal-As slammed into their respective targets, destroying the targets. All but three missiles hit, the others failed to detonate. It didn’t matter though. The targets were destroyed by the kinetic energy that the missile produced when it hit at over Mach 7. Melbourne was weakened by the missile strike, but it wasn’t the last one that would hit Australia. Two hours later, a new wave of missiles were fired. This time, more than 390 Imsdal-B missiles were fired from two Vengeance class ballistic submarines* 500 nautical miles away from Sydney. They too would soon hit hard.

By now, the Tyrandians were aware that the Cots were in the area and interrested, and the first naval action would take place very soon.

Several capital ships steamed out of the harbors of Australia, most of them under close observation from Norwegian satellites. All in all, the Norwegians counted 12 Arizona BBGNs, 23 Blade trimaran BCs and 3 Lancet trimaran BCNs steaming out of the ports, followed by a wide array of escorts, mostly destroyers and light cruisers.

The Norwegian fleet on the other hand included 7 Ragnarok [Flight II] class battleships, 14 Tiger class nuclear-powered battlecruisers, 3 Odin class heavy aircraft carriers, 15 Hordaland class heavy missilecruisers, 20 Kubler class light cruisers and a large number of destroyers and frigates, as well as transport and logistics ships and other minor warships. There were also a large amount of submarines involved, all in all 17 Virginia class subs and 15 Hades class subs were in the area, ready to unleash unholy hell on the enemy while they were engaged with the surface warships.

Several missiles were fired at eachother during the night, something which resulted in the Rothsky class ASW-destroyer HNoMS “Austrheim” (D237) being lost with all hands. Several other ships took casualties and damages as well, but they were still fit for the fight.

At 0736 the next morning, the UAVs operating as gun spotters for the battleships and battlecruisers detected the enemy fleet moving at full speed towards the Norwegians, and general quarters were sounded. The ships were fifty-nine nautical miles out, just within range for the mighty 16”/62 caliber cannons mounted on the Ragnaroks. The Tigers would have to wait till the enemy was closer, at fifty nautical miles before they could bring their 14”/60 caliber cannons to bear.

At exactly 0740, the first shells were fired from the seven Ragnaroks. A total of 63 projectiles flew in a carefully calculated projectory towards the enemy capital vessels, with a virtually invinsible UAV flying 30 nautical miles to the north of the enemy vessels, filming the whole show. At 0740.58, the shells slammed into four enemy Arizonas, causing severe damages at the ships. For the next ten minutes, there were six more volleys from the Ragnaroks before finally the Tigers could bring their weapons to bear. At 0800, a total of 63 16” shells and 168 14” shells were in the air, then slamming down on the enemy. A destroyer group moved closer and engaged the enemy escorts with Advanced Tomahawks and Harpoons, while under the wave, five Hades subs closed to twenty natical miles and fired a spread of ADCAPs towards the enemy ships. Another five Hades’ and three Virginias fired ADCAPs and Harpoons from the other side as well, giving the enemy groups a lot of firepower heading their way.

After five hours, the battle had ended with two sunken subs, seven destroyers, two cruisers and a Tiger sunk or FUBARed and five Tigers, sixteen escorts and two Ragnaroks damaged but repairable on the Norwegian side, but with only three enemy ships surviving the onslaught. They were allowed to limp back into port to lick their wounds by the Norwegians, who pressed on. Fresh support ships and repair ships joined the group and started repairing and rearming the Norwegian ships. The next missile strike would come at 1600 hours.

Tokyo, Japan

The Phone meeting with the King of Norway was finally finished. It was settled, the Japanese would recieve West Australia and Tasmania as well as New Zealand. Now everything was set, the last interests of the Empire would be fulfilled.

North Island, New Zealand

The Pacific Patrol Fleet had already started twards New Zealand, ready to land troops on the Eastern portion of the North Island. Submarines outside of New Zealand slowly crept into Tyrandis harbors. Once there, they started their suprise attack. The Tyrandis navy in the North Island was frantic, and would be unable to respond to the Pacific Fleet sent by Japan. It would take awhile for the South Island fleet to bring it self together to decide where to hit.

The Fleet had made it close enough to the North Island to launch bombers and the smaller ships carrying Marines. Frigates and Submarines would escort the boats untill they were with-in sight of the beaches, and would hult. The Frigates would begin firing as the submarines would disperse making a perimeter.

30 SECONDS!

The troop ships and amhibious APCs with turrets made their way to the beach. They were 30 seconds from landing, and the APCs were ready to fire. It was inhabited by people just catching a tan, well was untill the bombers screamed over head. Everyone was hiding inside their houses by now, making the landing and assembling of the Marines and APCs easier. Once they were assembled, they were sent on their path to Auckland, the biggest city on the North Island.

This wouldn't be like the operations in Greenmanbryan Indo-China, but instead it would be a full out asault on the city.

The exact same time...

Things were looking similar in Northern-West Australia. Except with missile attacks taking place in Indonesia. Missiles were being strategically targeted at defenses and other situated areas that intellegence had said were placed. The invasion of West Australia woud possibly start later, but the invasion of Tasmania would be directly after the taking of the South Island in New Zealand.

The news of the collapse of the Tyrandian government came as no surprise for the Norwegian fleet off the coast. After the first naval engagement, and the hundreds of cruise missiles fired, the defenses had been cleared. Seventeen enemy subs had been destroyed with the loss of only two Norwegian subs, an acceptable loss. Now, the battleships and battlecruisers moved to the coastline and started lobbing shells onto the shores of the relatively unguarded city of Bairnsdale. In three minutes, the LSTs and LCACs would start unloading Marines!

The first units to land were the second Regiment, 16th Marine Brigade. It consisted of 1,875 souls and a lot of equipment, among others a few M2018A1 Wolf light battle tanks, M2012 Marauders and M2008A1 Dingos. The Marines landed and found that the intel reports of anarchy were true. Civilians were shooting each other, using military and police issue weapons. Soldiers wandered around in disarray, not knowing what to do.

Oberst Leonardsen, the commander of the regiment saw that the situation wasn't exactly what he and his men had trained and prepared themselves to do, but they would do what was needed of them. Right now, that was to get the rest of the brigade unloaded and secure this city!

After five hours, the brigade under command of Brigader Oen was fully unloaded and in the process of securing the city along with Special Operations forces from HJK, the army special operation command. Meanwhile, the 23rd Brigade were moving forward to secure the beachhead so heavier troops would be shipped in.

H + thirty hours, and the landing regiment had been heavily reinforced with all four Marine Brigades being transported by the Pacific Fleet, as well as two Infanteribrigader, infantry brigades, and a Panserbrigade, tank brigade, from the Army, not to mention Telemarks Battaljon, an elite unit within the Army. They were pushing forward, gaining much territory as they went along. Some Tyrandian units that still held together inflicted some losses upon the Norwegians, but the highly trained forces pressed on, taking on the demoralized Tyrandian defenders.

They were following the expressway from Bairnsdale, pushing towards Canberra in known Norwegian style. Actually, the doctrine of pushing towards and capturing the capital city of the enemy was an old, tested and true method from ancient times and further developed by the old Imperial Cottish Army. Now, the men of the Norwegian armed forces were mostly trained by said army, and the Norwegian MoD had adopted that doctrine. The reason for that was simple: There is no better way of destroying the enemy morale and boosting the Norwegian (and allied) morale!

However, unbeknownst to the Norwegians, a rather large Tyrandian force had assembled outside Canberra, ready to defend against the invaders. It consisted mainly of light infantry armed with assault rifles and light arms, some fourteen thousand of them, as well as a few MTV-6 'Acotyle' tanks and M7-A4 'St. Christopher' IFVs. Once the invaders reached Canberras gates, they would get a fight, worthy for the history books.

As spontaneous as everything else happening in the world, the entire continent of Australia was being invaded by thousands of foreigners, not that the Patriarch was entirelly against the move. The government in Tyrandis had obviously failed in upholding its duties to protect its citizens. It was not worthy of holding power, it did not deserve to exist.

However, the citzens themselves had done nothing to deserve the hardships now being thrust upon them. It was not in the Bjornoyan nature to simply watch people suffer, but not help. With this spirit in mind, the Bjornoyan Patriarch readied two divisions residing in Wallis and Futuna, and 18 more divisions to be shipped from the port in Esthar. Along with the troops, Visara Co. shipped out what would become much needed food, water, and clothing. The twenty Bjornoyan Federal Peacekeeping divisions would hopefully be allowed to assist the war-torn region without incident.

The Patriarch Rand and Herrgott Jacksehn Hegel discussed the Bjornoyan mission throughout the night. It was the perfect oppurtunity to demonstrate to the world what Bjornoya stood for, where her loyalties lay. The invasion of nearly an entire continent would no go without some action on the part of the Bjornoyans.

As the fleet set sail, Herrgott Jacksehn Hegel sent an open communique to the world

Due to the recent conflict that has befallen the sub-continent of Australia, the Bjornoyan Federal Government has decided to take actions necessary to secure civil order amongst the chaos of this war. We do not intend to make any claims to the land, but as a morally conscious people, we are willing to uphold the sanctity of human life, even amongst this anti-thesis to it. We ask the combatants of all sides to not interfere with our cause.

OOC: Kinda like the Red Cross I guess, but with guns just in case. Figured this would be a reasonable way to get involved.

Reconnisance satellites detected several vessels moving towards Australia from Wallis / Fortuna. There could only be one nation willing to attempt something that stupid: the Bjornoyans. Immediately, the intel was relayed to the Viseadmiral in charge of the operations against Australia.

The Viseadmiral, a sixty-three year old by the name of Birger Fallo looked at the intel and shrugged. Why did they have to meddle in the business of the Kingdom? Could they not just mind their own damned business? 'Someone's got to show them that we're serious about this one' he thought as he dispatched seven submarines and a P-7A 'Orion II' to track the fleet and, if they turned hostile, sink them. He also sent a warning to the troops already in Australia about possible involvement against them.

A message was also sent to the Bjornoyans.

To: Bjornoya
From: Norwegian High Command
Subject: Australia

We have detected your fleet, and are concerned regarding their safety. For your information, all Norwegian forces around Australia has been ordered to fire against any potentially hostile targets that do not belong to our closest allies. We do not wish to destroy the relations we have with Bjornoya, but our forces will take no concern to nationality if they are engaged or otherwise threatened. They will act swiftly and harshly.

We understand your concern regarding the civilian populace, and you can rest assured that Norwegian forces will do nothing against the civilians, lest they attack us first naturally. If that occurs, our forces will be forced to act in self-defense to protect themselves. We will make no attempt of stopping supply and aid convoys, but we will stop and detain any soldiers armed with offensive weapons (OOC: such as tanks, IFVs, anything other than their rifle and pistol, basically).

If any Bjornoyans enter the Area of Operations, which at present consists of the entirety of eastern Australia, they do so at their own risk. Be advised that any attempts of interference with the Norwegian forces there, or any attempt of supporting our enemies, will be met with dire consequenses, not only for the troops, but also for the entirety of the Bjornoyan nation.

We hope that you understand our position, and withdraw your armed forces. Thank you in advance.

At the Odin [Flight I] class aircraft carrier HMNoS Tor, positioned around Hawdawgian Fiji, two F-37G 'Razor' fighters and a single RA-5E 'Vigilante' reconnisance aircraft took off and climbed to an altitude of 30,000 feet while heading for the Bjornoyan battlegroup. They were going to sweep in relatively fast and relatively low, taking snapshots of the fleet so the Norwegians knew what they could expect to face, should battle occur. However, they would stay far enough away so they didn't scare the Bjornoyans too much.

The 'Razor's were both armed with four AIM-120D 'AMRAAM's and two AIM-204B 'Dødsengel's internally in addition to the 750 rounds for their BK27 Mauser cannons. A very light load for the Layartebian-made fighters, which was classified top-secret by both the Layartebian and Norwegian government. It would remain that, having a RCS of only 0.009 feet². If the Bjornoyans sent up fighters to check out the 'Vigilante', they would quickly find the two 'Razor's on their asses.

OOC: Oh, I wasn't going to come right away during the fighting, but the fleet would arrive maybe in a few months. The few ships from Wallis and Futuna would arrive in maybe a week and a half.

To: Norwegian High Command
From: 14th Bjornoyan Federal Peacekeeping Division (en-route from Wallis and Futuna)
Re: Australia

We do not want our presence to appear as a threat. We will wait until the conflict subsides if needed to resolve the matter. We currently have three merchant-ships carrying basic neccesities bound for the Australian citizenry. These ships would be able to arrive within two and a half weeks. We ask permission for these ships to land and their crews distribute the rations and clothing to those in need.

Our main shipment will arrive from Esthar in three months. However, we may be able to give supplies by air sooner if neccessary. We again ask permission to fly relief missions over some pre-designated regions where it would be most needed.

The presence of Bjornoyan Federal Peacekeepers is meant as a beneficial medium for all parties concerned. The citizens will view the foreign forces with contempt, no matter how well intentioned the foreign forces are. The soldiers are going through stressful times as well. If provoked enough by the citizens, they may act irrationally due to the amount of tension. The presence of Bjornoyan Federal Peacekeepers is meant to relieve a bit of this tension, so the citizens may find different outlets to release their frustration, and the soldiers, who have too much to worry about already, do not need to deal so much with the citizenry. This is the first major conflict that we wish to participate in, and ask for the chance to prove our worth to the world in undertaking this task.

If, however, the Norwegian Government is adamant that Bjornoya take no part in this endeavor, we simply ask you let our merchant ships land so that their supplies may be distributed to those in need.

Outside Canberra, Tyrandian soldiers were massing for the slaughter. They were going face to face with the Norwegian Marines and Army, and they were in for a bloody fight.

As the time approached 0540, sunrise, the first of the 600 NPH-2 'Targa' self-propelled howitzers opened fire. The 'Targa's, not really much more than modified Pzh-2000s, released a total of 3,000 shells over the area in the next minute, followed by artillery rockets fired from the M270A2 and M142A1 MLRS' vehicles. The air was littered with projectiles, all targetting Tyrandian positions.

As the artillery barrage ended after fifteen minutes, the tanks started moving forward. 144 KVP-5A2 'Lion' and 216 KPV-3A1 'Imperator' main battle tanks lead the advance, followed closely by IPV-4A2 'Viking' IFVs and IPV-6 'Gramstad's of every variant available. They were supported by AH-64D 'Apache' and AH-75B 'Stalker' gunships, which fired Hellfire missiles and 2.75' rockets at the enemy positions. A few enemy helicopters tried to attack, but they were picked down from the skies using the IPV-6A7 'Gramstad' FAADV's Improved Starstreak missiles, and the PLV-1A2 'Devestator' anti-aircraft artillery.

Very quickly, the Norwegians decimated the 14,000 defenders, destroying any piece of machinery they could detect. They also killed a lot of soldiers. However, the Tyrandian equipment was very high-class, and claimed a lot of casualties. Of the 100 enemy tanks available, they took with them more than 160 Norwegian tanks and other armored vehicles, and more than 2,000 soldiers dead and twice that wounded. The Tyrandians were putting up a one hell of a fight. However, the Norwegians were certain in victory.

However, at 1045, when the field had been taken, they faced the daunting task of urban combat inside Canberra itself. Phase one in Operation "Brann" (the codename for the capture of Canberra) had been completed. Now it was time for phase two: the capture of Canberra itself.

NRK news report

After nine days of intense battles, the city of Canberra fell to Norwegian forces today, with the last of the defenders surrendering after the latest ultimatum offered by General Åberg, commander for the Norwegian land forces. According to official military spokesmen, the ultimatum was short and simple. "Surrender, or we'll carpetbomb the city." The survivors, most of them from Canberra according to sources, apparently could not bare the threat of their loved ones being bombed, and thus surrendered. Military personell call the surrender "a glorious victory" and "something which likely will instill fear in the enemy."

We have recieved unconfirmed reports of battles in the hills outside Sydney, but we will come back to those rumors when we have more information.

Military sources also said that Germanian forces were involved in the battle, and that they were "critical to the victory." Other than that, they refused to comment on the Germanian involvement.

A month later

The last of the Tyrandian defenders lay down their weapons and surrendered to Norwegian, Germanian and Layartebian soldiers in Mount Isa, Queensland. These men, formerly a professional army and now a ragtag group of defenders were disarmed, checked for weapons or intelligence, then taken to POW camps near Bourke, New South Wales where they would be held untill the Norwegians had confirmed that there were no more resistance. Then they would be returned to society as free men and women.

The announcement came 48 hours after the surrender, and simply said that the hostilities were over. Now, it was time to divide the spoils of war. The Norwegians would get New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory, which contained the city of Canberra. The Germanians would recieve the territories of South Australia and Victoria as per the agreement they had reached earlier in the campaign, and the territory of Western Australia and the island of Tasmania would go to Japan. No one were sure why Japan got anything, but they did. Anyway, now it was time to get the territories back up and running, and for that, the Norwegians would invest large sums of money and settle a lot of citizens there. Eastern Australia would see a new bloom.

Meanwhile, Marines were busy occupying several islands off Australia. They would help serve as early warning stations, and included the Coral Sea Islands, Christmas Island and Norfolk Island. All in all, Australia was a conquered island, and yet another victory for Norway and its allies.

OOC The end.
