The former Cottish capital of Cotlandstad was in a state of disarray. The Parliament was busy arguing over even the slightest of things, and due to the former Emperors last decree, noone was in charge of things untill elections could be held. The Parliament was still arguing about when and how the elections would be held.

All this was the pain for Major General Ribuni, the interim head of the Cottish defense force. At his disposal, he had six million men divided into a hundred division, each containing 20 000 infantry divided into four infantry brigades, five hundred trucks, a thousand Humvees and twenty-seven M2001 Crusader artillery. He also had 18 tank brigades, each with 500 M1A2 Abrams tanks and 1200 M113A3 Gavin APCs, along with 13 200 stormtroopers. He also had about fifty F-16C Falcon fighters and twelve B-8A Vulcan II strategic bombers, but only ancient AIM-7L Sparrow and AIM-9D Sidewinder air to air missiles and Mk-82 bombs.

Infantry Division

Infantry: 20 000
M998 Humvee: 1 000
Five Ton Truck: 500

Tank Brigade

Crew: 4 400
Stormtroopers: 13 200
M1A2 Abrams: 500
M113A3 Gavin: 1200

Air Force

F-16C Falcon: 50
B-8A Vulcan II: 12
C-130H Hercules: 4
UH-1Y Huey: 4 700

The armament of the soldiers were M1911 Colt .45s, M16A2s/M4A1s/M8A1s and M72 LAWs, in addition to a healthy supply of M67 frag grenades. However, all the soldiers were part-time soldiers, none of which had been in the regular army for more than ten years. Therefore their ability to defend themselves were less than that of the regular army. Combined with the lack of logistics, the defense force would be less than able to defend the Cottish republic. The Pushkan decree to invade the areas were going to be the final blow to the young republic.

"Zubov was now wearing his field uniform, he was sitting infront of an LCD screen in an armored train car with two big letters in white written on its sides "ЖА-47", Rail Road Army traincar #47. On the screen was a map of Cottish Republic, a bunch of dots were scattered across. Marshall clicked on one of them to zoom in, the screen gave him information about the number of combatants machinery and so on. Zubov looked at the picture for a second, then turned to a man sitting in the opposite corner of the car with a laptop hooked up to a rather large black metal box that was taking up most of the space in the car."

Zubov: Hey, Bodrov, relay the message to the 1st bomber division, i want them to get ahead of us and attack an enemy position near Cotladstand, the capitol.

"Man with a laptop raised his head only slightly"

Bodrov: Yes, comrade Marshall.

"He began typing something on his computer"

"In his head Zubov was laying out all the pieces, he was figuring out how this conflict will unfold."

Zubov: I am hoping a bunch of the bastards are going to surrender after the bombing, well we'll see. Maybe i should send Pavlod ahead, he seems to be a good man, Polestinsky will protect him from the flanks, all the air force units will provide close air support, this should be like takinga candy from a baby, i just need to make sure that this candy isn't gonna choke me to death. Alright enough thinking time for action.

"He turned to Bodrov"

Zubov: Hey leutenant, i assume you're done, go grab me some coffee and tell Hrushev that i will expect a full report by the end of the day.

Bodrov: Yes comrade Marshall.

"Bodrov left."

"Hrushev was standing in front of his pilots on the Dostievsk air field infront of a big monitor showing the mission plan, giving them his last speech."

Hrushev: Alright this is how its going to be done. We will have everbody flying the whole 1st division, all 221 bombers. I want you to stay as high as possible and out of the way of any enemy AA fire. In terms of support we gonna have 70 PVVS Arhangel Jet Fighters from the 1st Air Attack Division. Its not a full division but according to our intelligence this will be more then enough. Okay men time to go!

"The pilots ran to their bombers, it was only 5 minutes before the first one took off. Hrushev was watching as the planes took off, he was confident. He looked over his shoulder and saw his colleague General-Polkovnik Andrei Dementiev walk towards him."

Andrei: Heh Pasha, finally we're doing something real all the beurocractic bullshit was getting to my head.

Hrushev: God give, god take, lets see how this turns out.

The mood in Cotlandstad was one of worry. There were rumors flowing around in the streets that the Pushkans, people who had been among the closest of allies under the former regime was planning to annex the newly born republic. More and more people wished that they hadn't been so harsh against the Emperor because, when all came to all, he had been an alright ruler. The people had gotten to do pretty much whatever it wanted to, as long as it was within the bounds of the laws, which were strickt but mostly just. Now, people were doing exactly what they wanted, because when the Emperor had abolished the constitution, he had effectively abolished all laws. Therefore, people were going bananas, using various illegal substances in public and doing everything they hadn't been allowed to do before. Well, some people were, but still. Had it been under the former regime, they would have been arrested and gotten their asses thrown in jail a long time ago.

Major General Ribuni sat in his seat, worried. The few radar stations that had been fixed after the imperialists disabled them reported inbound aircraft from Pushka. In the air, he had four F-16Cs armed with a full load of (8) AIM-7L Sparrows and (2) AIM-9D Sidewinders, as well as two 370-gallon droptanks each. Their radars were on with full strength, but they had some difficulties finding the enemy. They would have to hope that the enemy blew their cover so the Falcon pilots could get a lock on with their aging Sparrow missiles. Unfortunately, the Sparrows needed a constant radar lock, so the Falcons would have to keep their weapons locked on to the incoming enemy planes untill they hit. It would probably turn out to be a distaster, but the pilots were all willing to die for their new-found liberties.

On the Pushkan border, the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 51th and 99th Infantry Divisions were placed on highest alert along with the 11th and 18th Tank Brigades. Attached to them were fifty M163 VADS anti-aircraft vehicles (armed with a M61A1 20mm chaingun) and twenty M6 Bradley Linebackers, which were armed with both a 25mm chaingun and four FIM-92F Stinger missiles. The infantry divisions had been busy placing vast minefields along the border. There were virtually tens of millions of Bouncing Betties, Claymores, AT-mines and small wooden Shue-mines on the border. That constituted the first line of defense along with the small company (36) of M2001 Crusader 155mm howitzers and ten batteries (90) of older M119A2 105mm towed howitzers. If the worst came to worst, the divisions would be decimated if not destroyed. The final breath of the Cottish republic would be to at least inflict severe casualties to the invaders. Secretly, the plans of the Parliament and the Defense Force leadership was to flee to other areas, most likely the Roman-occupied areas. At least there they would get to be under a democratic rule there and avoid the consequences of their people.

In a bunker deep underground hidden somethere within Union of Communist Republics leutenant Tarrass Shapkov was seating infront of a computer monitor systematically entering code on his keyboard. To his right and left were people with the same business as him, behind him on a higher ground stood a man wearing a black trenchcoat with no markings on it, nobody knew the man's name or rank, all they new was that he was their commander for this mission, the powers that be desided to put this man in charge of all intelligence and surveillance operations in the Cottish Republic conflict. The man in the trenchcoat gave out orders in a sharp metallic voice addressing his subordinates by their operating number rather then by their rank and name.

Commander: Operator # 35 did you finish collecting the satelite sweep data for the cottish republic?

Tarrass: Yes commander, i will send it directly to your information unit would you like me to add it to the list of updates for the next VRPB cycle turnover?

Commader: Yes.

Tarrass started typing more rapidly then before, his commander kept on giving orders.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile Marshall Zubov was enjoying his morning coffee in the train car 47. He looked intensely at his computer monitor with the VRPB model covering the whole screen. He saw 4 dots signifying enemy aircraft appearing infront of his eyes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hrushev was looking over his own monitor seating behind a desk in the controll tower of the Dostievsk air field. He wasn't worried.

Hrushev:70 Mish-11s against 4 enemy aircraft, plus we can already see them, this is too easy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the air above Cotland air squad leader Pavel Kapustin was looking at his LCD screen. His plane was flying on the autopilot, his targeting system already had a lock on his prey. The job of taking out those enemy fighters has fallen upon him. Aboard his craft he had 4 VRPB guided hyper maneuvarable RSD-9 medium range AA missiles, in addition to 4 RDK-13 short range AA missiles. On his side he also had the world's most advanced VRPB guidance system and he suspected an unmarked R/C-R radar plane lurking somethere nearby feeding him with continuous information on the position of his enemy. His cockpit beeped 4 times telling him that all 4 missiles were locked and ready to fire. He pressed the button and all of them flew away. This missiles were now guided by VRPB Information Link that provided them information on the target far beyond the capabilities of the sensors Mish-11 carried. RSD-9 missiles could perform amazing fits of maneuvarability, using their compressed air tanks and their 3D vector thruster to make sharp turns they could quickly make a 180 degree turn around flying at mach 2.9 and get the unsuspecting bastard who thought he just dodged the missile and was gonna live through the day. Pavel watched as his weapons were quickly disappearing in the morning sky.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The bombers were flying in a scattered/wide formation that was 30 kilometers across, their altitude was too high for being reached by enemy AA battery fire, the only things that could get to them were surface to air missiles, but they had defenses to ensure an almost impossibility of any danger. As they were now flying inside the enemy aerospace the 3rd squadron, a total of 12 bombers received new orders to hit targets of opportunity along the cottish/ucr border in order to make the advance of the ground troops easier. Quickly and confidently the 3rd squadron was approaching their first target of opportunity, a cluster of enemy troops on the ground below. 6th and 7th squardons received similar orders. The unsuspecting enemy was about to experience first hand what death felt like then you are helpless to do anything to stop it.

In the four Falcons, the RWR immediately went off with a sharp yell, alerting the pilots that they were being targeted by live missiles. The Squadron Leader in charge of the flight of four Falcons immediately took action and deployed a handful of chaff and flares while decending down to the ground as quickly as possible.

"Falcon lead to all, get to the fucking ground! Ground Control, we're being targetted by live missiles, repeat, we're being fired upon! Request immediate support"

"Falcon one, Gamma Charlie. Copy that."

On the various airfields around Cotland, all the fighters took to the skies along with the B-8A Vulcan II bombers who would try to get behind the Pushkan lines to bomb the living shit out of them with their load of Mk-82s.

For the F-16s, it was too late. Two of the Falcons got down to 700 feet and going fast with full afterburner, over Mach 1.6. The other two got picked off immediately, and only one pilot was able to eject. The two other F-16s manouvered like crazy, but they were quickly depleting their supply of chaff and flares. Then the third Falcon got hit, killing the pilot instantly. All the Squadron Leader could hope now was that the Pushkan missiles weren't so smart.

Pavel looked upon his LCD screen.

Pavel: Three confirmed kills, not bad. Those Cottish bastards are better then i thought though.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The last RSD-9 missile was approaching its target, then it suddenly ran out of fuel and crushed to the ground bellow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hrushev and Sapokov were now staring at their monitors with serious faces, over 70 enemy aircraft was no laughing matter, but still they weren't worried.

Hrushev: I want your guys to get out of trouble tell them to slow down and fall back, let my boys handle the fighters. This shouldn't be too hard, we'll massacre them from a far and slaughter those remaining up close, i would like to shake a hand of a man that can defeat a Mish-11 in close combat while its operating in the SRP mode, but unfortunately i doubt such a man will ever come to be.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The bombers fell back, 2 more squadrons were given orders to unload their cargo on the opportunity targets that were now below them. With a whistling sound of death first bombs fell.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

50 out of 70 Mish-11s were ordered to advance, 20 remained behind to protect the bombers incase everything went wrong, the fighters were flying in the pasti formation, they were divided into squadrons of 3, two planes fly side by side protecting each others flanks, 3rd plane soaring several douzen meters above ready to descend on the enemy if his comrades need help and pick off the lonely bastards who have separated from the group. But the formation was only use during the dogfight right now it was time for long range missiles to do what they could do. According to the VRPB all the fighters enemy had were no in the air there was no need to savor missiles. Each enemy jet fighter was locked on twice, some were locked on 3 times, enemy bombers weren't primary concern right now and were left alone for the time being. Pushkan PVV had plently of surface to air missile batteries to take care of anyone who was crazy enough to try and bomb them. All the missiles flew out of their carriers simultaniously.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

3 kilometers from the ucr/cottish border the invading ground force was assembling. Oleg Pavlov was a field commander, he prefered his warfare to be upclose and personnal, a sentiment not shared by his colleague Aleksey Polestinsky. Oleg was watching as the trains unloaded and units were being placed in to position. A messenger from Aleksey who was resigning in a mobile armored SOV-6 command post came running to Oleg with an urgent message.

Messenger: Comrade Army-General Oleg Pavlov, i was ordered to inform you that the VRPB system has shown the advancing enemy bomber force, comrade army-general Aleksey Polestinskey urges you to move your PVV batteries into position to attack the aproaching enemy.

Oleg: I don't favor men of the same rank as me who try to give me orders, make sure you tell that to your commander.

Messenger: Yes comrade army-general.

The messenger dissappeared back into the SOV. Oleg gave the order via his intercom. A total of four 3rd army PVV battalions were ready to unleash hell upon the enemy with their 480 Surface-to-Air Praetorian II Missile Batteries and 1200 Tunguska AA guns both weapons fitted with VRPB based targeting system.

"General, we've got reports of a large Pushkan Army on the border!"

Rubini looked up at the Corporal who had delivered the news. First, they attack the air force. Then, they prepare to invade? This meant war. It was as simple as that. Without the approval of Parliament or anyone else for that matter, Rubini called the artillery that was facing the border.

"Captain, this is Major General Rubini. Have you been informed of the Pushkan positions?"

"Yes sir, we have. I've got the coordinates right here." the Captain in charge of the artillery section said.

"I want you to unleash as much ordinance as possible at the positions, then relocate to deliver even more. Understood?"

The Captain was slightly puzzled, but still. An order was an order.

"Yes sir."

The line was closed immediately after, and the Captain picked up his radio. The 36 M2001 Crusaders stood ready with at least 300 meters between eachother, with their barrels elevated towards the Pushkan positions. The Crusaders stood 11 kilometers inside Cotland, and the enemy positions were 14 kilometers away. No sweat for the 155mm /56 caliber barrel on the M2001, which had a range of up to 40 kilometers. Immediately, all 36 SPHs had loaded high-explosive shells and stood by, waiting for the order to fire. They would all fire at the same time against the command area of the preparing divisions.

A bit closer to the border, 5 kilometers away stood the 90 M119A2 105mm howitzers spread out. Each of them had a maximum range of 14 kilometers, so they were able to fire at the enemy units preparing 8 kilometers away as well. They too loaded high-explosive shells, but they wouldn't fire at the command area. They would instead fire at the troops that were preparing to attack, hopefully scaring them into submission.

At exactly 0800 hours, seven minutes after the orders to fire had been issued, the ground shook as the 126 cannons fired, sending deadly 105mm and 155mm artillery shells into the enemy. Immediately the cannons were reloaded, and five seconds after the first volley, the Crusaders fired another volley. After the third firing, they quickly packed up and relocated to a secondary position, denying the Pushkans the pleasure of returning fire with their own artillery against the Cots.

The 105mms were reloaded slower, but ten seconds after the first volley, another 90 rounds were fired at the Pushkan units. Unfortunately these units were unable to be moved quickly, so the crews had dug trenches for cover instead. Hopefulyl, they wouldn't need to use them, although they all knew that that was too much to hope for.

Meanwhile, the Cottish infantry and tanks were being prepared for combat. Soon, they would have to go face to face with the Great Pushkan Bear, which was the nickname the Cots had for the Pushkan Red Army. Meanwhile, the artillery kept on raining down over the enemy. After all, attack is the best defense.

The fighters, barely on the wings came under a heavy attack from enemy stealth fighters. Soon, losses started as the more than 200 missiles fired from Pushkan aircraft slammed into the barely 40 planes scrambled. Needless to say, all of them were shot down, and only 28 pilots managed to eject safely.

****************

The bombs from the Pushkan bombers also slammed into the Cottish ground troops, destroying about 21 tanks and killing more than 900 soldiers, tank crews and infantry alike. The FIM-92 Stingers on the Linebackers had a too low range for the Cots to be able to engage them safely, so they were spared for the next time. The 7th and 99th Infantry Divisions, and the 18th Tank Brigade were the first ground-units to take casualties in the Cottish Campaign. Hopefully they would be able to inflict some severe casualties on the enemy before they had to capitulate.

A pillar of earth rose up from the ground and fell back down. Army-General Oleg Pavlov could smell the burning flesh, he could hear the first screams of pain as undeniable death was falling from the skies. Yet he stood motionless, yelling out orders into his intercom.

Oleg: I want all the available artillery units to open fire on enemy positions, i authorise the use of satelite scanning within the VRPB parameters of the area, the IL database code is 21343142423-325452354-34534534. I repeat the code is 21343142423-325452354-34534534. Confirm upon initiating the database transfer....good. Now target the bastards and fry them!

The enemy could attempt to change their positions as much as they wanted it made no difference for VRPB they were as clear as if they were on a plate.
VRPB satelite provided enough information to the artillery units to precisely target the enemy. In a matter of seconds 230 2S4 240mm self-propelled mortars, 900 155mm Incinérateur PVNS Rapid Firing Artillery Guns, 512 Corbulo Self-Propelled 155mm Field Guns and 670 TOS-1 MLRSs were ready to unleash hell upon the Cots. Meanwhile the rest of the units were slowly being prepared for operation. The first wave fired, thousands of kilograms of explosives flew into the air and descended on their targets as precisely as eagles catching their prey in mid flight. A pillar of smoke rose a 100 killometers into the air. And that was only the first wave. Oleg kept yelling into his itercom.

Oleg: I want all of my artillery guns to be firing in under 20 minutes. Reposition those that already fired and fire them again, i want those bastards to burn! Do not stop firing until i give you the order to do so.

He switched the channel

Oleg: To all infantry and armored infantry units ready for combat, you are to be ready for an advance in 10 minutes, assemble in a formation and await further orders.

He switched the channel again.

Oleg: Polestinsky, i want your guys to attack the enemy from the flanks, lets make this a pinser.

Aleksey: Good, i will also position my artillery on the flanks for more support.

Oleg: Use your SOV-6 long range radio to contact Sapachov, this whole thing might be easier if we have 10-15 thousand paratroopes sealing the deal in the enemie's rear.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seven minutes later General-Polkovnik Andrei Sapachov hung up the phone and picked it up again.

Sapachov: To 12th and 27th paratrooper divisions, you will fly a mission behind the enemy lines in full strength, you have 30 minutes to prepare.

He hung up the phone and redialed.

Sapachov: Is this Polkovnik-General Dementiev? I request a 50 fighter escort for my paratrooper transporters....aga....excellent.

He hung up the phone.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thirty minutes later 200 AN-124 and 102 AN-225 planes took off from the airfield 40 kilometers from the cottish border, on board the planes carried 20000 men and 1400 T-04A paradroppable tank. Ten minutes after the take off they were joined by 50 Mish-11 PVVNS Arhangels providing them escort. They have just received a report that enemie's fighter force was destroyed, nothing was to interfere with Pushkan victory.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Somethere in the air above Cotland 185 Chaika bombers were approaching their target, escorted by 20 Mish-11 Arhangels they felt safe, the skies were clear, the enemie's capital was only an hour away.

-------------message to Cottish Republic-----------------------------------

We strongly urge you to consider unconditional surrender.
Cotland
28-10-2005, 21:39
The Cottish republic was doomed, and everyone knew it. A short government adress was given by the interim prime minister, then everything went black. Later, unconfirmed reports would be given, saying that a train filled with government officials had been seen moving southwest towards Roman-occupied areas. In the power vaccume that ensued, defections were at an alltime high, and even mass executions didn't stop the defections. The front lines collapsed, and the once mighty Cottish Army fled for the first time. Now, this wasn't the Imperial Cottish Army, which had enjoyed enormous respect when the Empire still lasted, but a rag-tag army of reservists, most of them old and not as strong as the men that were supposed to be manning the equipment.

Major General Rubini looked over the empty parliament building. There were noone left there, and loads of paper were scattered all over the burning building. Pushkan bombs had shocked the capital, but in a silent mocking, the building still stood. Outside, in a alley, ten M1A2 Abrams tanks stood, surrounded by a company of infantrymen. These men were the personal escort of the current Cottish ruler, and along with more than 30 000 other men, they defended the Cottish capital. A final order had been issued to the soldiers of the Army before it was dismissed: Defend the homeland at any cost, using guerilla tactics. Never let the enemy rest! The only catch was that from this moment onwards, they were guerilla soldiers and not soldiers in the Cottish Army. Therefore most of them relieved themselves of their uniforms and took their weapons, ammo and equipment with them homewards, where they would form a resistance unit.

The following message to the Pushkan commander was given over an open frequency.

"This is Major General John Rubini, commander of the Army of the Cottish Republic. I am hereby offering the unconditional surrender of the Army of the Cottish Republic. If you concur, please cease all hostile actions and accept my official surrender. I do not take responsibility for the actions of my men from this moment on."

------OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM UNION OF COMMUNIST REPUBLICS -------

Major General John Rubini, we accept your surrender and will send our specialists to your capitol to start reorganizing this great land immediately. You are hereby ordered to give yourself up to the closest UCR military unit you can find, we will interrigate you and then you shall be released to a new life in the new life in a new country. We want it to be known to everyone that we are no tyrants and we are no evil doers, we only wish friendship and cooperation.

-Alexandr Chorni, Prime Minister of UCR

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

An uncrypted order was made to all Pushkan military units on the ex-cottish territory:

"Stop all hostilities. Stop all hostilities. All air units retreat back to your homebase. All ground units, report to the closest comman post and await further orders. Over."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back in Voronej, Zubov and Chorni were once again sitting behind a round desk in the Prime Minister's office, drinking tea and discussing the current events.

Zubov: So, Sasha, what are you going to do with the new republic?

Chorni: Send in the specialists, let them organize the whole thing, routine procedure: colectivization, establishing of a regional communist party committee, redistribution of wealth, followed by extraction of the rebellious element and the complete and total assimilation into the Union. We got people living on top of each other in irkutsk, i will push an order through the parliment to redistribute the population a bit, my goal is to move over 100 million people west over the next decade. You've done well, we all have done well.

Zubov: Thats true.

He got out a small metal flask and poured the colorless liquid into his now empty tea cup then he did the same to Alexander's cup. Then he raised his hand in a toast.

Zubov: For the motherland!

Sasha: For the communist party!

They proceeded to emptying their cups.

Major General John Rubini, Army of the Cottish Republic

Major General John Rubini, accompanied by his loyal aide Major David Henriksen and two loyal soldiers armed with M4 carbines drove the M998 Humvee, which was fitted with a M240 machinegun and a white flag towards the Pushkan command post. As he approached, several Pushkan soldiers came out with their rifles trained on the Cots. Rubini looked over the men that were to take him prisoner, then down on his men, then back up on the Pushkans.

"I am Major General Rubini, and I intend to surrender to your commanding officer. Please take me to him."

The Pushkans nodded and took Rubini to their commander, Army-General Aleksey Polestinsky. As Rubini approached the Pushkan general, he opened the flap on the leather holster which contained his personal M1911 pistol. The Pushkans were a bit more aware then they saw that, but Rubini had no intention of killing anyone. He had done enough of that in his life. One meter from the general, Rubini snapped to attention and saluted the victor.

"General, I am Major General John Rubini of the Army of the Cottish Republic. I would like to offer my surrender, and that of the entirety of the Armed Forces of the Cottish Republic. Please accept this as a symbol of my surrender."

He pulled out his pistol and presented it to the Pushkan general. The time of the Cottish Republic truly was over.
