Paerisian Nuclear Research and Development Lab, Kaero Desert, 0100 hours
Head scientist Alabastor Igoravich sighed and looked again at the Geiger Counter in front of him, and scratched a few notes onto his paper. He played distractedly with his wedding ring as he hit the intercom button.
"Gregory, add more rods to the pile," came the scientist's voice, crackling either because of static or exhaustion.
"Yes boss," came the reply, with a background noise of typing coming with it.
Alabastor sighed again and watched the Geiger Counter as the needle stayed still. Two years, and nothing to show for it except for bags under his eyes. Alabastor was idly thinking about his ever-approaching retirement when the needle spiked.
Quickly, Alabastor jumped to attention. He wrote the time and count in his notes, and called Gregory again.
"Gregory, quickly, add three more rods to the pile," his excitement must have traveled through the intercom, because Gregory sounded nearly the same when he replied:
"Yes, sir!"
Alabastor's gray-blue eyes greedily watched the Geiger Counter, praying for a sustained jump. He thought about the recent accomplishment. The needle had moved.
And it was moving again.
The scientists eyes darted back and forth as the needle jumped from number to number. His entire body was praying that it would stay, praying for a reaction.
And it happened.
For thirteen seconds, the nuclear pile within the blast chamber, that for two years had lay dormant, had just emitted enough energy to power Paerae, the capital of Paeris.
Excitedly, Alabastor picked up the phone and dialed the seven digits.
4-3-6-7-8-2-1...
It rang once, then twice, and just as the phone began to ring a third time, a man picked up.
"Alabastor, what has happened," asked the man, his voice solid yet tired sounding.
"IT has happened," exclaimed the excited scientist, all thoughts of sleep and retirement gone now.
"Amazing," breathed the man. "Excellent work Alabastor, I will announce it tomorrow."
With that, the phone hung up, and Alabastor Igoravich smiled.
Diplomatic Building, Paerae, 0900 hours
Jeri Moviracar stepped excitedly toward the podium, allowing his nation to cheer him for several moments. And then he spoke.
"Today," rang his steely voice. "Is a joyous day for all Paerisians. Today, we have joined the ranks of the few truly great nations with our move into the nuclear age. Today, we assure our glory, for the years to come!"
The cheers of the crowd grew loud. They knew what this meant. They had finally done it. And now no one could stop them.
OOC: First off, thanks for reading this, and second, this is open, you may comment. Basically, this is my way of rejecting the "No NoOKs 4 NeWbs" thing, because I am not a new player.
