The current political structure has actually reverted to that of a monarchy. You may have had seen reference to a 'Patriarch' in some of my posts. That is because the situation in the galaxy is so dangerous that the Jedi Master Alex Masaki has brought back the Imperial state to ensure the safety of the remaining people of Coreworlds and thus regained the title of Patriarch, head of the Family and the High Council.
Counter to the Patriarch is his evil granddaughter Nightshade. She has taken the post of Empress, effectively grabbing the throne for herself. So Coreworlds has effectively split into two space kingdoms nowadays.

Nightshade's kingdom (or should I say...queendom?) encompasses the old Coreworlds territory of over 20 systems, 6 of them major ones.
The 'good guy' kingdom is actually about the same size with recent conquests and annexations although it only has 2 main systems: Jurai and Bastion.
