A Brief History of the Confederacy.
[OOC: This will later form the basis of a Confederacy of Unaligned Systems factbook. If you have any interest in interaction with the Confederacy of Unaligned Systems, feel free to give an OOC comment on this thread.]

The Confederacy of Unaligned Systems was formed in the ravages of war during the decline of the old Federation of Collective Worlds, which had begun colonizing Confederate space almost a millennia ago. During its height, the Federation of Collective Worlds was a large and isolated, controlling all of what its people defined to be ‘known space.’ This included some twelve star systems, and thirty-seven planets – four of which were habitable, and another seven of which were terraformed to some degree.

In the year 874 by the Federation’s count, the Federation – which had increasingly become a highly centralized dictatorship – began a general decline when war broke out between the settlers of Morovina (one of the few entirely habitable worlds) and the rest of the Federation over issues of diplomatic representation. What had been local unrest quickly spread to consume the entire planet, and soon began to infect other colonies in the region. It took until late 875 for these disturbances to begin to subside, by which time the Federation Navy had become increasingly involved.

In the last days of the year 875, the situation again worsened when Federation authorities declared a blockade of Morovina. The blockade was enforced diligently, and by the coming of year 876, eight Morovinnian vessels had been destroyed trying to run the blockade, at the cost of some 200 lives. When a ninth vessel, the freighter Apollo VIII, attempted to run the blockade the order came to close down the Morovinnian ports. Federal troops moved in, and pandemonium broke loose.

No sooner had Federal soldiers set foot on the soil of Morovina than the aggrieved populace began a outright revolt. In daring boarding action, several Morovinnian ships managed to overwhelm and capture one Federal capital ship and turn its weapons against their enemies. The Federal blockade broke when engaged by one of their own vessels, and the blockading force withdrew.

Word of the Morovinnian revolt spread rapidly, and within three days, a major split had developed between many of the planets in the Federation. The Federal Navy was likewise split into loyalist and rebel contingents, and those vessels which fell under rebel control flocked to orbit above Morovina. There, they were engaged by loyalist forces and, with heavy loss, withdrew outside of Federation space.

The judgment brought down on Morovina was swift and terrible. Of the loyalist fleet, some ten capital ships had survived the battle in good order, and they began a bombardment of the rebellious planet. For a full 20 hours they fired, and when the bombardment finally ceased, half of Morovina’s population lay dead in the rubble of their own homes.

The rebel fleet struck back 35 days later, in a lightning raid that captured and managed to hold the Idessian Shipyards based on the moon of the planet Idessa. There, they began to build up a fleet while all around them the Federation’s grip crumbled. By the turn of 877, rebel forces had retaken Morovina, as well as the neighboring planet Galecia, and had wrenched the entire Morovinnian System from Federation control.

That year, the rising leaders of the rebellion came together in the First Legislature of the Confederacy. There, they formally united the rebellions on Morovina, Idessa, and Galecia as the Confederacy of Unaligned Worlds. With continued successes over the next two years, the Confederacy of Unaligned Worlds was changed to the Confederacy of Unaligned Systems, as the two planets of the Kaelian System, Kaelia and Arda, fell to the Rebels, as well as the planet Lombé in the Darkan System.

Fighting between the Confederacy of Unaligned Systems and the Federation of Collective Worlds continued for another five years, with little gain on either side, and in 882 a peace accord was finally reached which formally recognized the Confederacy of Unaligned Systems as a separate entity from the Federation.

It was at this time that the first subspace probes began to leave Federation ‘known space’ on ventures financed by private enterprises in both the Confederacy and the Federation, and it was from these probes that the Confederacy and the Federation first learned of civilization other than their own. Surprisingly, little has been done to interact with these other civilizations which have been observed, and the Confederacy remains almost completely isolated from all other nations, save their enemies in the Federation.
