September 29, Gyumri, Armenia.
Tempers flared yesterday into outright violence in Gyumri, and major city in Northern Armenia. For the past three days protesters have rallied against the potential takeover of the small nations power and utility company, The Electricity Networks of Armenia, by a subsidiary of Russia's state-controlled Unified Energy Systems monopoly.
Riots turned violent early this morning when the Armenian government gave the green light for the takeover. Armenian troops and riot police were quickly deployed to contain riots and restore order when a frightened soldier fired into the crowd. A right-wing political party, the Armenian Peoples Party, declares the incident a flagrant disregard for the well being of the nations people. The citizens of Vanadzor and Sevan have begun rioting over Armenia's use of military force to supress a civilian population. Shots have reportedly been fired at government soldiers trying to restore order, with over two dozen deaths so far. The Government has declared martial law in all of northern Armenia and has mobilized the army to restore order, declaring the north to be in a state of rebellion.
