The CNS Nightingale floated serenly over the test world. Vast green swatches of the bacterial algae that was the highest form of life on the planet marred the otherwise blue and brown sphere. A large storm system was brewing on the southern hemisphere, it already dwarfed the largest of old Terra's hurricanes and wasn't even at full strength yet.

Fleet Admiral Elliot looked out of the observation deck window. She was dressed in full dress uniform, the black with silver trim sparkled in the light. She turned to the media gathered on the deck with her, "Ladies and Gentlemen of the press," She began, "You are about to witness the greatest single release of energy ever unleashed by the Confederacy. This test is to show any nations hostile to us what they would face should they act against us."

Elliot paused then activated the intercom, "You may fire when ready."

At her command the fury of Nightingale's full broadside was let loose on the planet. The invisible primary beams struck an instant before the electric blue particle beam tracers did and a blister of white light brighter than the star the planet orbited appeared.

A plume of vapourized rock blasted into orbit as a shockwave blew the atmosphere off the planet. The massive storm that had been brewing flashed away in an instant.

The circle of molten rock was expanding away from the impact site as sub-orbital ejecta began falling back to the planet causing their own massive impact explosions.

The oceans boiled and disappeared and the media watched and recorded as the once fertile planet was turned into a lifeless husk.

After it was over Elliot spoke, "It would be a shame if we had to unleash this fury on an enemy's homeworld. But if we had no other choice we would do it. Let this serve as a warning to all who would dare impose themelves on the Confederacy."

The Sebecean Government acknowledges existance of this weapon by means of intel sources, however this test is seen as a threat to the Second Sebecean Democratic Imperium. We will not tollerate a illegal government as yours to continue with such acts. The Sebecean Imperial Council and the Sebecean Coalitionist Congress are currently deciding the fate of your people.

Despite our relatively similar views on political nemeses, I feel it important to pose the following query:

Why for was it not deemed more appropriate to simply annihilate a dead planet, rather than one with a flourishing bacterial population that would make it a PRIME terraforming target? Devastation of that magnitude did not need an ecosystem to destroy.

A world that could have one day played host to entire civilizations, completely destroyed, as a demonstration? It may not be now, but it could have been home to millions, if not billions! All that potential, WASTED, because of a need to prove some measure of superiority that could just as easily have been conducted on an asteroid!

There are no words for it...

Illegal government? The Confederacy is a perfectly legal governing body spanning three major worlds and dozens of colonies and outposts. That your nation would seek to belittle ours for producing the means to defend ourselves is revolting.

We do not wish hostilities between our nations. But be warned that if hostilites should arise you will not find the Confederacy an easy push over.

Dear Revered Ally. We are glad to inform you, as a result of your... impressive lightshow, we are sending you a complementary bucket of fruit, picked from the tree of the Sub-Vice-Under Minister for External Affair's garden by no other than the Sub-Under-Vice-Minister himself. Also, a book voucher with 7 HT credits still on it is being sent, as a sign of our appreciation.

Hoping you have a nice day, Sub-Vice-Under Minister for External Affairs, Captain McLaugherty.

As the message went, the Captain sighed. He did like cheese from the Seven Moons, he must admit.

You misunderstand the query, and the point. I am asking how you could be so stupid as to ruin an otherwise ideal planet for future colonization, just to show off, when you could just as easily have conducted the test on an asteroid or lifeless moon.

Your move was a foolish waste of an entire planet that could have been a home for your people in the future. That you do not seem to realize this speaks volumes about YOUR priorities.

AND your complete lack of foresight.

A proper demonstration could only have been done on a planet with a significant atmosphere and ocean system. We hardly need more worlds to colonize, and with modern FTL travel it is a trivial matter to find other suitable worlds for colonization even if we had the need.

Habitable planets are far more common than most nations realize*. We have no concerns over our choice.

While the government of Al-Imvadjah does not approve of the destruction of planets, we recognize the sovreignty of Xessithima and its right to keep the technical specifications of its vessels secret.

We do however ask that the power of the Nightengale be kept closely controlled. We would be most displeased if it were possible for a single man to destroy a planet with this device.

Thank you for your time.

Around Sunama Prima, the massive hull of the Sebecean Beast known as the Mon Ecliptus, orbited in the highest of orbits. It was one of the three Decimators, and was still the most used one with the most experianced crew. Just over 38 miles long it was the largest ship, and the most powerful ship in the in the Sebecean Fleet. Crewed by a few thousand souls (not counting symbiants) and housing a armada of Sybiant Ships (ships manned by a biomechanically inserted Sebecean). It was the largest fleet ever assembled by the Sebeceans, in one ship.

It began to leave orbit, and head out, when a big blue wormhole (the only way for it to jump) ate the ship up. It was soon spat out near a destroyed planet, where it fired multpule pods loaded with a anarobic bacteria, that would quickly spread and create oxygen. It the targeted a ship, a large one, and fired three megabolt shots over its hull, and then sent a hail of aggression.

This is the Sebecean Imperial Decimator, Mon Ecliptus. You are ordered to surrender the ship and its weapon. Non-compliance will result in the destruction of your vessel.

Elliot had rushed to the flag deck when she was told of the foreign ship that had appeared on sensors. "Report!"

"TRADAR picked up the ship a few minutes ago, estimated mass is one point eight to the exponent seventeen kilograms. Shields are operating at full capacity and the main reactor will be at full battle output in thirty-seven seconds. Subsidiary reactors have charged the primary and secondary capacitors of all weapons." A hologram of an attractive woman appeared, "Shall I sound General Quarters?"

"Do it Nightingale." Elliot ordered to the ship's AI. A harsh grating alarm blared throughout the ship.

"Ma'am the ship has launched several pods at the planet. Scans suggest they're filled with bacteria." The tactical officer reported.

Elliot snorted, "That makes no sense, the planet is an airless ball of molten rock."

"WEAPON FIRE!" Tactical screamed, "Three shots over our hull."

"Incoming transmission." Communications said. Elliot listened to the message.

"There is no way in hell that we're giving up this ship." Elliot barked at the attacking ship. "Nightingale, Guns you may return fire."

"With pleasure." Nightingale answered. She swiftly calculated the best targets on the enemy ship, the tactical officer sent those targets to the gunnery stations and within a second the Nightingale unleashed enough energy blow up a 4000km diameter moon at the enemy ship.

The Decimator, took the weapon hits- the energy arched over to the Energy-Sink Manifolds as each one of them turned a bright white as the stored 90% of the energy and were feeding it into the massive Sink Batteries. Massive archs of energy jetted out to the released satelite guns, charging them- again enemies fell for it, and fired energy rounds to only power their destruction. Arch Satelite cannons opened their might than ripped across the hull of the ship with 10x the energy of a powerful lightning strike. Hull mounted megabolt cannons fired the large bolts of Charged Particles at the ship. Mass Drivers and Rail Guns fired upon the ship.

The thousands of Symbiant fighters launched, and began focusing fire on the enemies weapon and propulsion systems. The massive Chaotic Gravity Cannons charged and aimed their shots off the hull of the ship. Even with a near miss the gees near the singularity of a gravity cannon were enough to crack the hull and crush and throw people around, even with artificial gravity. So much was coming from the Decimator, yet that was only alittle of what it could bring to bear.

Notes:

Energy-Sinks: Receive 90% energy from a energy or charged weapons and direct that to Sink Manifolds where it is stored as raw energy and heat. The energy can be slowly spread in space, or can be pumped into the reactor for increased energy output.

Chaotic Gravity Cannon: A micro singularity(blackhole) that is charge and project out of the barrel by gravity generators.

Satelite Weapons: Weapons that detach from the main hull and orbit the main hull for increased firepower. They are powered by energy archs from the mothership.

The sattelite cannon weapon fire danced harmlessly on the shields of the Nightingale occasionaly punctuated by a flash that was an exploding shell. Powerfull magnetic fields deflected the charged particle beams around the ship and the ship's tractor beams, guided by Nightingale, pushed the micro-singularities away from the ship. The few she missed had no effect due to the ship's powerfull intertial dampners.

Point defence fire lanced out at the swarming fighters, the individual bolts being fired so fast the tracers appeared as a continuos beam.

"I've analyzed our first strike Admiral. It would appear that they have a system that absorbs approximately ninety percent of our weapon yield. The remaining ten percent impacts their hull from what I can see." Nightingale reported.

"Guns keep up the assault, ten percent of our broadside is enough to destroy that ship." Elliot ordered, and the mighty guns spat another lethal blast of energy at the enemy ship. Though all the energy wouldn't reach their hull the ten percent that would be enough to vapourize a six-hundred kilometer diameter nickel-iron asteroid.

The massive drivers fired two objects behind the enemy, and they fired two Grav cannon shots at them. The detonated, a small supernovae, the effect of a miniture black hole hitting a micro-neutron star of the same mass. Countless numbers of sand sized diamonds were ejected from the blast at near light speed. They were enough to sand and heavily damage the Decimator. The Force Gravity shields were activated and countered the inertia of the sand, stopping it in its path, creating a solid wall of diamonds. A polarized shield was raised and sent the energy into the depths of space. The symbiants with their fast reflexes dodged most of the predictible fire, and continued to bombard the enemy, untill they pulled back, as the full barrage of Grav Singularities were fired, this time for a direct hit. The force of which would shatter anything.

The diamonds slammed into the shields and vapourized transferring their energy to the neutrino radiators and heat sinks. The energy of the impact was totally dissipated in under two miliseconds. The Nightingale fired a full broadside again.

The tiny swarming fighters were being used only for target practice as their weapons made no impact on the shields of the ship.

Nightingale was pleased with how she was performing, but she sensed something. TRADAR was showing a large energy surge in the other ship, consistent with a large gravity cannon shot. Her reflexes acted at light speed as she prepared the tractor beams to counter the forthcoming singularites, when they fired she had them targetted and being decelerated in under a micro-second.

The singularities were stopped four hundred kilometers away from the hull and their gravity was insignificant at the range.

Nightingale's hologram smiled as she felt her guns fire another moon shattering broadside. The other ship didn't know what they were facing.

The half of the fired energy was absorbed while the rest was ejected into space. The massive dome on the front 'nose' of the ship began to open, and a massive barrel of the Star Lance. The Sink Batteries began to drain themselves as the black around the barrel began to glow a deep purple. Another broadside, the Lance took more of the energy. Two wings began to appear on the sides of the ship, armed with Quark beams, particle cannons, megabolt, and gravity cannons, began to fired on the enemy. Sensors and specrum sensors began to fuzz out from the massive energy that was being brought to bare.

[5 minutes to full charge, not counting hostile fire.]

Nightingale continued pounding energy into the enemy ship. Her tractors continued to deflect the singularities fired at her and their other weapons still were ineffective against her shields.

She was aware of the massive energy buildup along the nose of the enemy. "Admiral I'm detecting a large energy build up indicative of an upcoming energy blast. It is consistent with the energy absorbed from our fire so far. I predcit five minutes before they fire."

Elliot nodded, "It's likely going to keep them from firing anything that powerfull again for at least as long." She paused, "Guns hold your fire until the enemy fires, our shields will handle their blast while you fire everything into that weapon's aperature."

Five minutes later, the enemy fired the massive energy swarmed into the Nightingale's heat sinks, filling it to one-third capacity. At the same time the Nightingale fired a full broadside down the throat of the enemy's ship.

A large stream of energy, a mile in diameter, hit the enemy. Their sheilds and sinks seemed to soak most of it up, but it had cleaned the Decimator's sinks. They tooked the full baring of the broadside with ease. Any smart designed would not make the most vulnerable spor, vulnerable and heat-sinks were charged in that bay, loading the batteries with plenty of energy to fire again, but they did not. In the mist of light after the blast, the Mon Ecliptus charged the Nightingale, and closed the 2,000 mile gap quickly. The ship was accellerating at 50% of its capacity, at 600 gees/s. It would be a quick hit, and the Decimator had the advantage of size. Force Graviton Shields were powered up, 10 seconds... 9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4 the shields were activated, pushing any bit of matter back at 610 gees... 3.. 2... 1... impact

Elliot sighed, "This is getting no where fast. Helm, take us away from them, max accel."

"Aye aye, Ma'am." The helm officer reported and the Nightingale's twelve mighty engines fired and the ship accelerated away at five-thousand five-hundred gravities.

Within seconds the Nightingale was clear of being rammed, in fact in the time it took the enemy to close the remaining distance the Nightingale was twenty-eight thousand kilometers* away.

The Decimator Captian soon lost it, he ordered total hell. The enemy had now presented itself for the thousands of gun turrets which fired, megabolt and Chaotic Grav. Tens of thousands of bolts came from the Decimator, the FTL Dictator cannon fired creating an unstable field around the ship, blinding it. A small Symbiant Patrol Combat Ship exited the Decimator, and subspace jumped, it appeared next to the enemy ship, and in two seconds had created a large enough subspace hole around both itself and the enemy. The guns stopped and focused on a spot 15,000 miles closer. At the point at which the guns were focused, the two ship reappeared, and were hit at the moment they re-entered. The Symbiant ship self destructed sending debris to the enemy. A full Sebecean broadside of full guns and ordinance was seconds away from the enemy. One of the Decimators drones had attached itself to the hull of the enemy, and injected a Nano-Virus that began to feed on the hull and grow expontially. It was a powerful strike ordered at the Captians fury, but the Executive Officer knew that only 10% of capability was needed.

The subspace rift formed and suddenly the Nightingale was four thousanf kilometers closer to the enemy and a massive barage of enemy fire was mere seconds from impacting.

Nightingale laughed to herself, she reversed her acceleration. The massive broadside passed harmlessly in front of her and she resumed full forward acceleration.

A small fighter exploded off her bow, the debris vapourized against her shields. She frowned, another fighter had gotten through her shields and released some sort of virus on her hull. The fighter was quickly vapourized by the hull-hugging shields. She then lowered her shields onto the hull and burned off the virus and sacrificed some of her armour, it could always be replaced.

She sent new targetting data to the gunners, half of the next broadside went to where the enemy would be if it continued on its present course, the other half to where it would be if it pulled the same trick she had. Not that it mattered, the enemy only had 13 miliseconds to react to the lightspeed weaponry, and they hadn't been displaying the reaction times that having an AI like Nightingale granted.

* * *

Admiral Johansen, commander of the Home Defense Fleet, sat on his flag bridge on the CNS Indefeatable; a Dauntless-class Star Battleship. "So that test with the Nightingale went well didn't it Admiral." Said Indefeatable, Able for short, the ship's AI.

"So it would seem Able." Johansen responded. "Though I am curious as to why they haven't returned and..."

"TRADAR reports incoming object. Return to realspace in three... two...one." The tactical officer reported, "It's a ship, a big one at that and OH SHIT! They've opened fire!"

Able had the GQ alarm sounding before anyone could react. "Shields are at full, reactor will be at max peak in ten seconds, primary capacitors are charged," Able reported.

"Sir First fleet is reporting GQ. Xess has raised planetary shields, they're surface defences will be online in forty seconds."

"Open fire!" Johansen yelled, and the fleet obliged. The ten Dauntless's of First fleet had a combined firepower of two of Nightingale's broadsides alone. Missile frigates fired ten metric ton kinetic kill missiles at one thousandth of a percent under cee and thousands of fighters swarmed from the carriers armed with a mix of anti-ship and anti-fighter missiles.

The massive amount of energy poured into the enemy, and then it fired its main gun. The massive blast racecd towards the planet and the shield glowed briefly as it absorbed and re-radiated the energy away as neutrinos.

Then the surface batteries opened fire. Hundreds of energy bolts each as powerful as a Nightingale broadside raced into the enemy ship.

They had made a mistake of coming here.

The Sebeceans have been a people of resolve, and the Decimator took the hits, and fired back. After three minutes of combat, a fleet of cloaked Phalanx class Modular Frigates decloaked and engaged the enemy positions with the most advanced weapons arrays of all Sebecean ships, even the Decimators. A few seconds after that 13 Command Carrier Entourages (5-10 Carriers + escorts in a Entourage) exited subspace behind the enemy ships and enegaged them with their FRAG Cannons and Megabolts. The carriers launched their Banshees and Valkaryres. More ship jumped in, this time 7 Dreadnought Battlegroups (same as entourage) and 10 Command Battlecarrier Contingents (same as others).

The battle raged as sides engaged each other, a light show, but it chaged when a fleet of ships (kinda like a larger goa-uld hatak from stargate), unseen in the Imperium before, exited jump. They did not engage the enemy, but headed for the planet, they passed through the shield and defenses with any problem. The ship dropped fusion bombs on cities and others burn forests. Once a large enough area was cleared they landed, and their pyramid sides moved around until three figures were seen kneeling on the pyramid's sides. They were the three gods, and the ships began to unload a few million Troopers and Orbital Marines.

The United Federation of Germanische stands by Xessmithia in its demonstration of its defensive capabilities. In the universe as it is today, enemies can be found everywhere.

In our support of Xessmithia's show of resolve towards any outside forces, we do not wish to alienate our allies, the Godulans. We respect both points of view, however, we are more accustomed to defending ourselves and the codes of ethics and justice to which we ascribe.

Should Xessmithia ever fall under attack, we pledge our support in any means necessary. Though these means be slight, as we are committed in our own internal struggles, we will do what we can for our allies.

And, should the Federation and Confederation not established any formal alliance, we offer our hand now to the nation of Xessmithia.

Sincerely,

Yohanne Schutgart LXXIV, Chancellor of the United Federation of Germanische Zustande
