This is an OOC thread:

Here is my dilema:
My nation (The People's Republic of Mannatopia) is building a new navy in the RP.
I am trying to come up with a prefix(I am not sure that is the proper term) for my ships. Examples of others are USS (like USS Nimitz) for "United States Ship" or HMS (like HMS Invincible) for "Her/His Majesty's Ship"

Now, the obvious one for my nation would be "People's Mannatopian Ship" but there is a problem: the acronym would be PMS, which for reasons that I won't go into detail but should be obvious, I don't wannt to use.


Here is what I propose:

Post ideas that you have that fit with my country's background

After 2 days (I might make that amount longer if needed), I will select from the submissions the ones that are suitable i.e. do not have problems like PMS does

I will then create a poll in this thread with the selected acceptable entries, and you all can vote on them for 2 days (again, I will make it longer if needed)

Rules:

entries must include the acronym and what it stands for
example:
USS United States Ship

the entries acronyms should be between 2 and 4 letters

try to avoid joke ideas/ones that are obviously not going to be picked

if you are going to comment on someone else's idea negatively, keep it constructive
example:
"MRS Mannatopian Republic Ship" is probably not good because Mannatopia is not a republic
what I don't want:
"MRS Mannatopian Republic Ship" sucks, is dumb, and a bad idea, but I have no reason other than that

Here is some background:
People's Republic of Mannatopia

It is a MT nation, a communist government, with pretty heavy emphasis on military

it has a population as of this post of 222 million

its leader is Premier Yong Jin-ho, and the primary governing body is the Politburo

the ships themselves are likely to be given names from Korean mythology or history

I would suggest MNV - Mannatopian Naval Vessel, the alternative for civilian liners and merchants flying the Mannatopian ensign being MMV, or MMS, Mannatopian Merchant Vessel / Mannatopian Merchant Ship.

The phonetics wouldn't sound odd either: "Mike November Victor," "Mike Mike Victor," and "Mike Mike Sierra," respectively.

Then why have your name as republic? And my suggestion is MNNS the Mannatopian National Naval Service.

Actually, lots of communist countries have republic in the name:
USSR United Soviet Socialist Republics
People's Republic of China
Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea)
German Democratic Republic (East Germany)

those are just the one's off the top of my head. it is the common practice used by the communist nations to name themselves.

my suggestion is MNNS the Mannatopian National Naval Service.
Would it be ok if I changed it to MNNS the Mannatopian National Naval Ship? If you don't want me to change it (or rather if you don't say that it is ok to change it) then I will put the other idea as a seperate entry under my name.

I would suggest MNV - Mannatopian Naval VesselI second the above. I would have suggested it myself but Russkya beat me to it.

A breif suggestion if I may. Not quite an entry.
Why not do the name in the native language of your nation, and not Engish? Unless English is the native language of your nation whereas this is pointless for me to post.

But that's how I have it set up, and it helps change the acronym because if your nation has adifferent language then English, it is doubtful that PMS (For People's Mannatopian Ship) will be the same abbreviation for that title in another language.

Great ideas so far everyone. Please, keep them coming. Notice that in the first post of on the thread I am putting the names that I have approved, and who submitted them first.

Please remember to include the acronym as I cannot tell just by the full name alone. Examples of problems are names that include "the" or "of" as sometimes the acronym includes those words, and sometimes it does not. If you don't post an acronym, and someone else later posts the same idea WITH an acronym, they get the credit for the idea.

I am rejecting this one because Mannatopia is definitely not a monarchy, and does not have royal stuff.

Why PMS isn't a bad acronym, paraphrasing Iuthia on IRC<Iuthicito> Ships are refered to as women, and it has the acronym "PMS" so you could make them out to be always raged.

I'm not using PMS. Final. End of story. No using of PMS will be done by me.

Or more conventally:
MCG

If the navy is relativly new then it is probably more of a coast guard anyways.

By the by, I was beaten to it but wanted to suggest something like:
"The Peoples Ship"

Or, using that nonenglish flavor again I'll steal one from Southeastasia:

If the navy is relativly new then it is probably more of a coast guard anyways.
It is starting out as a smaller navy more suited for coastal operations, the starting force being 15 frigates, 5 destroyers, and 2 light STOVL carriers (they can only carry 12 STOVL fighters and 13 helicopters)

Even though it is starting small, it will not always be, this name is going to stay the same regardless of when my navy grows (unless I have some sort of revolution or something of course ;) )

I can imagine one of my kingdoms' foppish aristocrats coming up with something like this so - One more, off the wall, idea that I will *ahem* float is:

If it floats then it is obviously naval. There is no need to belabor the fact with a designation; a ships' name & that's it.

I have considered doing this, a number of RL nations already do that such as Russia, Spain, France. At least I think they do that.

I decided against doing that for no particular reason, I just felt like having a designation more than not having one :D .

How does MCV or MCS sound? (Mannatopian Commune Vessel/Ship) Would reflect your people, or maybe PCS, People's Commune Ship.

Not to nit-pick, but Isreal does have a designation, IDS (Isreali Defence Ship). Not to be mistaken for their counterpart, PCP (Palestinian Combat Partol) ;-)

People's Naval Vessel (PNV)

The one I use for Rotovia is RNS (Rotovia Naval Ship), but mostly 'cos it sound cool. "Watch out! It's the RNS Hathor!" Some good sh!t. I also have the UHS (Under His/Her Command) for the Imperial Navy.

I use RNS for "Republic Navy's Ship," it's a little bland but it's better than the alternative Aequatian Republic Ship (ARS).

On a further note to this (Igot bored), it does add a flair of individuality to your nation to name it yourself. But if you ask for suggestions Here it goes.

Sorry, my useage of Russian characters is bad, I don't speak or know how to use the language.

Of course the english idea of "Mannatopian Ship of War" or MSW is always good.


My own nation uses the title "Kalam Nisma-gug" to designate ships, shortened to "KNG" when required to be written in the Roman script, or just written in it's three entirty in Cueinform normally (Which is only 3 characters). The name itself is made in the official language of my nation, and I think makes my ships a little unique.
By the way, iut translates into English as "Sumerian Ship of Warfare"... but SSW doesn't sound as cool.

Shuh-rahm (people) Man-nuh-top-yah (Mannatopia) Shuhn-bahk (ship)
