Dark Days
OOC: Feel free to get involved in any way you want to, but be reasonable and intelligent. Second, the main players of my part of this RP have not yet been introduced, so that may limit involvement a little, but feel free to play the media, or what not. For example your nation could offer aid to stabalize certain areas or what not. I am really open to anything, but still reserve the right to refuse anyone's RP if it doesn't fit. A few may also recognise this thread from a while back, I really liked it but had too much to do to keep it going so here it goes again.
IC: It is a dark time in The Infinite Crucible. The Emperor’s line, who have ruled over the nation for centuries with an iron fist have stepped down. This event shocked the nation, but also caused great rejoicing in many unseen corners. The great oppressor had resigned. Such celebration was short lived however, as the new democratic government put in place seems to have little control of the nation and crime has skyrocketed. The majority of the outlying isles are in a stage of complete anarchy and the new government has called for the mobilization of the entire military to keep order. This, however, may still not be enough as the majority of the military is still loyal to the Emperor and sees this new government as a corrupt successor that forced him out of office. This has led to many divisions refusing to leave base and provide aid to areas that are engulfed in chaos, despite that a near genocide is being carried out on loyalists to the Emperor at the hands of those he formally oppressed.
The new government is infuriated with the loyalist’s refusal to aid in the stabilization of the nation and many former supporters are now disappearing to forces besides those of the rioters. This is where the tale begins, on a long dark road in a dying forest.
A convoy was pushing its way through The Dead Wood, a massive forest slowly dying, poisoned by industrial pollution. It was thirty cars long, each one save the first two and last two filled with powerful loyalists being transported to a safer area. The entire coast north of the forest has fallen completely out of government control, and hundreds of loyalists are being evacuated to the safety of the hills south of the forest, an area under government control. The men, woman, and children on board this convoy are all very rich members of the loyalists, and losing them would be a great blow. However, the new government has a great deal to gain if they were to die. This would cut off a major portion of money flow into the loyalist organization and it would kill off multiple high ranking officials who still follow the Emperor.
The convoy turned off of the paved road and began to take a muddy side road. After a few miles they passed over a small wood bridge and it began to rain. The sky wept for the plight of those below her. Thousands of gallons of tears fell to the earth. Her own compassion would be the death of those on the convoy, her sympathy the tightening of the noose. Still the sky cried on.
Soon the solid dirt turned to mud and the trucks began to slow and finally stopped. The captain of the convoy stepped from the lead truck. He was a lieutenant in the army, loyal to the Emperor. He looked down the muddy path and saw that it only got worse up ahead, if they pushed on much further they would get stuck.
A wealthy woman stepped from a forward truck, “Why have we stopped in this dreadful weather?”
The lieutenant responded, “We cant push on through this dirt road much farther, we are going to have to turn around and find another way.”
Soon a crowd began to grow in the rain. They were tired and had been driving for man hours, they were agitated, angry, but most of all they were frightened. Many of them had just barely escaped with their lives when the riots broke out. Many had lost close friends or family to the mob, were forced to watch as they were shot or cut to pieces. They wanted to get as far from the riots as possible, and the forest was hardly a safe place.
“Why couldn’t we just take the paved road, why did we have to come down this god forsaken backwater path?” on yelled out. They had escaped from the mob, and now they were the mob. The power was a euphoria to them. The people yelled out in agreement.
The lieutenant was taken aback, he had just saved these peoples lives and they were angry with him. He scolded, “Listen you ungrateful swine, I just saved your candy asses from certain death, and this is how I am repaid!”
Guilt was a powerful emotion and it flooded through the crowd, the mob was stopped before it had really began.
The lieutenant continued, “That road led us dangerously close to a riot epicenter, and there was a good chance a road block had been established, we couldn’t take that risk, so we cam this way.”
The calmed the crowd fully, but then someone realized something, “Well where the hell do we go, we cant go back, we cant go this way, and we cant take the main road, we’re trapped!” The people began to panic.
The lieutenant calmed them, “Don’t worry, we are going to return to the main road then call for air recon on the suspected road block areas.” He continued, “If there is a threat we will be forced to go through it, but we will have air and armored support.” The crowd felt safe at this. He finished, “Now if you will all please return to the trucks we can turn around and get under way.”
At this the people began to mule back into the covered vehicles, now soaked to the bone. After a half hour of extreme effort the convoy managed to turn around and was well underway back towards the main road. The people thought they would be safe in a matter of hours, this was wrong, they would be dead in a matter of minutes.
The convoy approached the bridge, and was forced to stop, the waters of the stream below were raging and the bridge was out. The lieutenant cursed and got out to examine the bridge. His aid followed.
They reached the edge of the bridge and began to examine it. The aid piped, “The waters must have broken the bridge, damn bad luck.”
The lieutenant took a closer look, the wood was black at the edges… seared. His heart began to race. “No, this was caused by explo-,” he never got to finish. At that moment a hollow point rifle round from a high powered sniper rifle hit his forehead. It shattered into hundreds of pieces shredding his features and creating a massive pulsating bloody crater where his face had been. The aid almost screamed, but he two was dead within seconds.
Men from the escort poured out and took up positions, but they already knew they didn’t stand a chance. This wasn’t some haphazard riot strike. Soon machine gun fire enveloped the convoy. The guards fought valiantly and bravely, but with the terrible weather they didn’t see a thing. They were slaughtered blind, no more aware than cows slowly moving towards the butcher. Within a minute all fifty men from the escort were dead. The loyalists were panicking.
Men covered in foliage and camouflage emerged from the forest. They made no move for a slow slaughter of the civilians they had trapped, they were far too efficient for theatrics. People who tried to run were shot, and those who hid under the tarp were incinerated by flamethrowers. Within two minutes over four hundred civilian loyalists were dead. The men planted explosives on each truck and headed back into the forest. Minutes later the convoy was nothing more than a string of smoking craters.
Dark days indeed.
