CLP Members open to merging central bank system with Grand Duchy
A preliminary vote held today in the Caza della Legislatorio Parlemento showed some positive results for those wishing to see some form of a unified central banking system between Pacitalia and our nation's strongest ally, Hamptonshire.
The final tabulation showed a result of 155-83 in support of such a move, with two members abstaining. 71 of the 83 that opposed were members of the leftist Green, Communist and Social Coalition parties. Most of the governing FPD and some of the Greens voted in favour of the idea. Note, however, that this was a preliminary vote, and counts for almost nothing save public opinion. Note, as well, that the Senatoro and PM would also have to approve these measures after the CLP.
Support for a unified system has been increasing since a rather effective leaflet campaign took place in Timiocato, and on news that many in Hamptonshire also support a similar modification and/or unification of the two countries' central banking operations. Neither Prime Minister Ell nor Hamptonian Prime Minister Ziller were available for comment, but signs are that both would approve such a move if it were to become a serious piece of legislation.
Among the goals of the pro-unification supporters is to remove the fixed rate on the USD, which they claim is badly hurting business in Pacitalia. Since the rate fixation was implemented in 1994 between Pacitalia, Hamptonshire and the United States, the exchange rate between the RPD and the USD has increased to where a fixed rate of 1 douro to $10 US would be more realistic. In addition to that revaluation, they wish to see an eventual unified currency used both in Pacitalia and Hamptonshire.
Major crash on Pacitalian autostrada kills 12 and injures 71
A serious crash in southern Pacitalia has killed 12 road users and injured a further 71 people. The superaccident happened Sunday evening around 8pm CPDT, during torrential rains and wind. It took place on a stretch of the eight-lane A7 about 24km north of the holy Muslim site of Algubina. That section of the superhighway is notorious for its sharp curves and low visibility during certain weather conditions. The Pacitalian Road Management Administration (PRMA) is investigating the cause of the crash along with Algubina District Police.
Agustinate of Transportation Mario Ischiamo offered his condolences. "We've been studying the hazards of this particular highway and know how dangerous it can be. My department is truly working at top speed to figure out ways to reduce the hazards to drivers in this part of the country, specifically on this treacherous route. I'm so very sorry for the loss of life, and wish the damage could be reversed."
This accident is the first that has happened on an autostrada since the rather unlucky Friday, 13 May, when a three-axle transport truck collided head-on with a small car, during foggy conditions, at three in the morning on the A4 between Sinistra and Saronno. The A7, meanwhile, stretches 724km between Lucifora (Liguria province) in the northwest and Timiocato (Capitale province) in the southeast. The historic city of Argostoli and the Western Hemisphere's only historical holy Muslim site (in Algubina) are important stops along this major roadway, which carries the autostrada system's ninth-highest traffic volume - 3,420,000 vehicles per day.
Pacitalia to open formalised relations with Gehenna Tartarus and Scolopendra
Rumours surfacing a few days ago about the possibility of emerging Tartaro-Pacitalian and Scolopendra-Pacitalian relations have been confirmed today by the Agustinate of International Relations and the Prime Minister. Both Mr Bezir Araz and Mr Ell reported to the media - the former from the Woodstock Pact conference in Sarzonia - and the latter from the New Prado, that Pacitalia was in serious talks with the established and respected nations of Gehenna Tartarus and Scolopendra to create formalised diplomatic relations.
"This is an excellent opportunity for Pacitalian diplomatic channels to improve, expand and solidify," Prime Minister Ell said today. "We anticipate that the talks with both nations will be highly successful, and we look very much forward to having formal relations with Gehenna Tartarus and Scolopendra, two different nations that share a similar, respected and admired view in the eyes of the Pacitalian government, as well as the citizens it serves."
From Woodstock, Mr Bezir Araz added: "I'm sure my successor will be very excited, to, on top of her new duties as Agustinate of International Relations, work with two upstanding, co-operative nations on the world stage." Mr Bezir Araz is not kidding around about his 'successor', as he has been promoted from the AoIR portfolio, to serve as the new Vice President of the Central National Bank of Pacitalia. (See below story for more information.)
We could not reach the Scolopendran Supreme Emperor or the leader of Gehenna Tartarus for comments, but unofficial word out of their governments seems to suggest they share the same attitude about the talks as the Pacitalian prime minister and now former Agustinate of International Relations.
AoIR Kemal Bezir Araz promoted to lucrative CNBP position
The Ministry of International Relations and Foreign Affairs (MIRFA) has announced that Kemal Bezir Araz will be leaving the post of Agustinate of International Relations, which is, as well as being a senior cabinet position in the federal government, the top job at MIRFA. His last day will be Friday, 30 September, upon which he will start his new position as Vice President of the Banco Nationali Centrale di Pacitalia (Central National Bank of Pacitalia) on Monday, 3 October. On that date, the new AoIR will officially take over. If the talks at the Woodstock Pact go past his last day, he will still serve as Pacitalia's representative to the Pact's talks.
A new AoIR has not been named, but unofficial government sources tell us Mr Araz wishes for the new position-holder to be female. If not, the only viable male replacement is the former AoIR, Vasiliou Bandanaris, who currently holds the Agustinate of Education portfolio, and has a remarkable 79% approval rating. It's important to note that Bandanaris only had a 55% approval rating as the head of MIRFA and, simultaneously of course, as AoIR.

While the cat's away, the nation will play
Rosian Grand Chancellor Sergei Ilyanov is currently on vacation in Greece, where he seems to be enjoying the sights and sounds of another country. However, while he does that, a new domestic political opponent called the Free Republican Party is gaining power in the National Assemblies of the Imperial Republics of the Island of Rose. Their platform calls for the dissolution of the Imperial Union.
As Sergei Ilyanov is not the head of state, the actual man to hold the position, Frederick von Hattensberg, was the only one who could legitimately comment on the issue. He opposes this and has been hinting that he might propose legislation to ban the party. Those supporting the FRP are outraged that such an undemocratic move would be undertaken by the governing party.
